This is the fourth storybook coloring book I have purchased by Jae Eun Lee. I know that there is a fifth one due out this year and I am sincerely hoping that there will be more next year. I had some issues with the first book in the series (“Anne of Green Gables”) having too many story pages as opposed to coloring pages but each book since then has had a much better mix. I also prefer that much of the story is now incorporated into the coloring pages rather than taking up a page by itself. To be fair, those story pages have very elaborate designs to color as well but I wanted more of the actual designs to color. In this book the mix 18 story pages and 50 design pages for a total of 68 actual storybook pages. There are also four pages of thumbnails of the images and nine other pages (preface, forward, and title pages or those pages following the end of the story) which have designs that you can color.Once again, the pages are beautifully illustrated with highly romanticized images. The designs are detailed but are not intricate with tiny elements. I was easily able to color using just the standard pencil point. This is the story based on the original book by L. Frank Baum. The story is certainly not complete, so you will want to keep a copy of the book along with it. The “story” included just gives a little bit of foundation to the pictures which immediately follow it but will not give anyone reading it a real idea of what the story is fully about. For my first project in this coloring book, I chose a picture that included Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion. I used my Faber-Castell Polychromos for this book and found that though these, as well as other oil-based pencils did not blend as well as I might like, I liked the way the pencils worked with the paper otherwise and I used them more for layering colors and shading more so than for any blending. For fun, I will use a different brand of colored pencils for coloring each book in this series to give each one a slightly different appearance. Here is what I found in a brief overview:68 pages of Designs and Story Book Illustrations plus extra pages that can be colored as wellPrinted on both sides of pagePages are heavyweight, slightly smooth and non-perforatedGlue BindingSome Designs merge into the bindingSome Designs spread across two pagesAlcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers do not bleed throughIndia ink pens do not bleed throughGel pens do not bleed through but require extra drying timeColoring pencils did well in laying down good color with this paper. I found that for the most part both oil and wax based pencils worked well except neither were great for blending. Wax-based pencils did better at blending than did oil-based colors but both were acceptable for my use. Hard lead pencils did not leave dents on the back of the page.

This OZ coloring book is alright. it is VERY detailed, however it seems as if the story line doesnt make sense in a way, which I didnt like. If youre looking for VERY detailed pictures choose this one. If youre looking for a coloring book about OZ with the story line in place and the pictures amazing, I recommend The Wizard of OZ by Attanasio, Fabiana.

This is a Christmas gift for someone but looking through it the pictures look fantastic to color!

great pictures for my daughter to color

Really cool designs, but really elaborate. I wouldn't suggest for small kids, but great for adults.

I bought this book for my mother as a gift. She's been a diehard fan of the Wizard of Oz ever since she was a little girl and she loves adult coloring books. (I recently even talked her into prisma colored pencils due to her sudden obsession with these)I decided before I gave her this book that I'd check out the quality of everything and make sure it wouldn't be a poor gift.Reading the story was a little strange because I've only ever been showed the movie. Personally I found it very child-friendly and enjoyed it. The graphics quality were, as an artist, highly impressive. I've seen a lot of people do repeat pages or designs in these books and I've found it highly offensive and lazy. This particular book, however, was not the case. The book itself was thick from how solid the pages were-- and there were a good few pages to nod a nod of approval to.I find myself to be a very cynical artist and horribly picky with what I give my friends and family because of it. This book is very high on my approval list and I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking to give a gift or wanting something whimsical and of good quality for personal reasons. I can even admit that I was a little upset with myself for not purchasing two by the time it was all said and done with so I'd have a copy for myself. Amazing work-- highest of props to the artist.

Super cute images. Good paper. Some very cute double sided images!

I love the classic style images to color that go with the story.

Lovely photos and informative story about my second favorite animal.

Extensively researched, gorgeously illustrated, highly engaging book that both kids and adults can learn from! My daughter is still much too young to read it but already loves the art (who wouldn't love looking at dynamic watercolors of a baby elephant with her family and the beautiful African landscape?) And I enjoyed reading the whole thing, can't wait until she's old enough we can share that together. Fun little details like the Kenya-shaped key-chain on the Swiss army knife (representing the multi-function trunk) let you know the author/illustrator really put a lot of thought into every aspect of this book. Don't miss out! And while you're at it, it pairs fantastically with her award-winning first book Neighborhood Sharks if you don't already have a copy.

This is a nonfiction book about African elephants in a gorgeously illustrated picture book style format. Beautiful full-page artwork and very informative. My son and I both learned a lot about elephants. The author and illustrator, Katherine Roy, really knows how to capture the interest of children with her storytelling style, interesting facts, and awesome pictorial diagrams & illustrations. She teaches the reader about elephants while focusing on the elephant calf learning and growing. We really liked her first book, Neighborhood Sharks, and found this one to be equally engaging and breathtaking. I'd say it is best suited for the elementary school age child, but really all ages would enjoy this special book.

This book is absolutely filled with a lot of great elephant facts. My daughter loved it. When I asked her why she loved it, she said, “I liked learning about elephants and the pictures are beautiful.” I agree with her on both accounts. Being an 8-year-old, she particularly loved to learn some “gross” information about elephants such as the fact that elephants only digests less than 50% of the nutrients they eat so their dung serves as a good, already partially digested, baby food for baby elephants as well as a good source of nutrition for other birds, reptiles, and mammals. The illustrations are absolutely stunning as well. Some are just plain beautiful and other pack a big learning punch. I particularly liked one that looks like a pocket knife fanned out but details the various functions performed by the elephant’s trunk. My only tiny complaint, although not enough to deduct a star, is that this book follows a newborn female elephant and her life. We really do not get much of an understanding of how the life of a male differs from a female. I think that would be worth learning as well.

This is an absolute gem. Every page informs & enlightens & even entertains. Katherine Roy portrays the beauty & wonder of biodiversity on Earth. But how does she do it? It starts with the perfect angle…The narrative hook pulls you in and makes you curious. And then…. The tone, point of view & colors in the illustrations captivate you. And then…The visual metaphors, so distinctive, impress you. And then…The flawless way it’s all presented & structured inspires you.I'm also a huge fan of her other fantastic book Neighborhood Sharks.Asante, Katherine Roy.

This picture book celebrates elephants in a way that invites readers deeply into the life of a newborn elephant calf and all that that baby has to learn. The book opens with the birth and then the family of female elephants that will raise the infant together. The elephant’s body is explored from the way it walks and balances to the way its ears help handle the heat to the dexterity of the trunk. Sounds and food are also explored along with the habitat the elephants live in. Throughout, the book offers scientific information in a conversational way. The book is almost like a readable version of nature documentaries where facts celebrate and delight. The art of the picture book is rich and warm showing the elephants in their habitat. It also shows scientific information about structure and sound that is presented graphically and with just enough detail for young readers. An exceptional science and nature nonfiction picture book, this is one stellar pick for library collections. Appropriate for ages 6-9.

Learn all about elephants, their anatomy and physiology, and their social patterns. This is a fantastically written, superbly informative, and captivatingly illustrated book on elephants. I can see this being all a middle grader needs for a very good report on elephants. Roy did her homework and explains things in ways kids should easily grasp. The artwork is a unique watercolor style that deserves all the chatter it is getting about a possible shiny sticker in its future. I can definitely visualize a Caldecott and a Sibert sticker gracing the front of this in the future. Hand this to your favorite elephant lover and they will love you more for it. Also recommended to science classrooms and those studying Africa.

What must it be like for a baby elephant, with so many things to learn in order to survive to adulthood in the African wild? Roy paints a thorough portrait of life in a herd on the savanna, offering expert insights into anatomy, herd dynamics, family relationships, and other aspects of the development and growth of these majestic animals through the story of an infant learning its way. Award-winning Roy's stunning watercolor illustrations pair perfectly with the information to offer additional insights while tugging at heartstrings. In addition, backmatter discusses modern threats to elephants, plus suggests sources for learning more.

Why the First-Year Seminar Matters

Review

Perhaps the most frequently asked question I get from community college educators about guided pathways is: "How do we, with very limited resources for advising, help students explore options for college and careers, choose a program that is a good fit for them, and develop and follow a plan for completing their program?" This book provides the answer. It is deeply informed by the latest research on career and college exploration and planning, but also practical in the guidance it provides. I highly recommend it to colleges seeking to help students develop a sense of purpose and a plan for realizing their goals. (Davis Jenkins, Senior Research Scholar, Community College Research Center, Teachers College Columbia University)Harrington and Orosz provide a compelling case for leveraging the power of first-year seminars to help students choose and work towards a career path. This is an important read for educators desiring to better understand how a first-year seminar can play a pivotal role in the Guided Pathways movement. (Dan Friedman, director, University 101 programs, University of South Carolina)This is an important book that lands with perfect timing as the guided pathways movement evolves past its initial stages. Authentic career exploration and the matching of student interests to careers is quietly one of most important and most challenging parts of pathways redesign. I also have held publicly for years that first-term/ first-year experience courses either exclusively or primarily targeted toward career exploration are necessary to optimize guided pathways redesign. This book shares important guidance from practitioners who are living this work on the ground, and I highly recommend it to a wide range of community college and four-year faculty, staff and administrators. (Robert Johnstone, founder and president, National Center for Inquiry & Improvement)This book brings together a solid review of research on the effectiveness of career pathways for college students and a practical guide to linking these pathways into a common student success intervention, the first-year seminar course. It is a must-read for educators seeking ways to maintain both student motivation and understanding of the vital link between college and career. (Betsy O. Barefoot Ed.D, senior scholar, Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education)Christine Harrington and Theresa Orosz offer a well-researched and compelling argument for increasing college completion by modernizing the First Year Seminar and leveraging it as a core element of Guided Pathways. A worthy read. (Michael Collins, Vice President - Postsecondary State Policy, Jobs for the Future)Reform efforts in higher education have approached the challenge of improving student success by accretion—by piling on stand-alone initiatives and creating “initiative fatigue” among those responsible for implementing these initiatives. This book demonstrates how colleges can move beyond initiative addition to initiative integration, resulting in student support that is more: (a) synergistic—combines separate initiatives (guided pathways and the first-year seminar) to generate a collective, multiplicative impact on student success,(b) sustainable—builds on a well-supported, proactively-delivered, first-year seminar to generate a long-term educational vocational plan that guides students from college entry to college completion, (c) scalable—provides intrusive (inescapable) support that reaches the entire student body, and(d) holistic—supports the student as a “whole person”, addressing both academic and “non-academic” (personal) factors that affect student success. This book is a must read for any professional interested in helping students discover their passion, find a path to their future, and develop a systematic plan for navigating that path. (Joseph B. Cuseo, professor emeritus, psychology, Marymount California University)
