This is an excellent book about going and staying vegan as a teenager. I read it in almost 24 hours, it was so well written I just couldn't put it down. I would recommend this not only for teens who are vegan or thinking about going vegan, but for the parents of vegan teens who want to better understand the lifestyle choices of their child.

I'm actually surprised by the 5-star reviews. I checked this out from my local library hoping it would help me come up with ways to respond to people that ask me why I'm vegan. It had some suggestions, but no more than any other book about veg*nism would have.My main issue with the book is that it clearly wasn't edited. I had to re-read a handful of sentences because they just didn't make sense..mostly due to missing/extra words and missing/extra commas. I'm not trying to be super picky, but I expect published books to not have issues on just about every page. I don't think that's too much to ask.The author also uses sarcasm to get some of her points across, and that makes it more difficult to read. "Wait, is she being serious? Oh, no, she's just kidding. Ha...ha?"Even though I'm vegan and I agree with what the author was writing (for the most part), I came away with a guilty feeling. And I'm already vegan! How is that possible?There are definitely better books out there. If you are a teen, I'd suggest just reading other vegan books and maybe just skimming this one.

Had historical and genealogical information I was seeking. I was able to complete information and documentation for my my descent from Stephen Hopkins with the historical and genealogical information contained within it. Caleb Johnson was the person who researched and discovered critical information and heretofore unknown adventures of Stephen Hopkins' in Bermuda and subsequent settlement in Virgnia Colony for a short period. He is unique in that he was a settler in Virginia after his episode in Bermuda; and also a passenger on the MAYFLOWER and one of the settlers of Plymouth Colony. His descendants are eligible for membership in both the Jamestowne Society and the Mayflower Society.Caleb Johnson accomplished so much by doing his extensive research on the life and adventures of Stphen Hopkins.

I loved this book! I read it because Stephen Hopkins is on my family tree. It's the most exhaustive collection of information about him that I've ever come across. I could have saved myself a lot of pointing and clicking if I'd just found this book first. Since I read the book, I've learned that "Here Shall I Die Ashore" is the go-to book for genealogists on this subject. There are several appendixes in the back that add to the knowledge of the reader. It's easy to read, not boring at all.

I enjoy history and am old enough to have benefited from school systems that actually included history in their curriculums. Caleb Johnson did a wonderful job wrapping the adventures of Stephen Hopkins in historical fact. I never actually thought of him as anything but one of the survivors of the Mayflower crossing. As it turns out he was shipwrecked in Bermuda a decade earlier, worked in Jamestown VA for 6 or 7 years before returning to England and ultimately signing on for the Mayflower expedition. Descriptions of the hardships endured by the Pilgrims, their interactions with the native populations and their struggle to establish a colony were riveting. The somewhat defiant nature of Stephen in spite of strict Pilgrim rules served to both amuse and amaze at the life of this adventurer. .

I bought this book because I believe that I am an ancestor of Stephen Hopkins. It was interesting from that standpoint. However, it is a difficult book to read at times.Because the book talks about an individual who was at both Jamestown and was on the Mayflower, it has some interesting stories about both locations. It is particularly fascinating to read about what the Pilgrims went through when they first came to North America. You appreciate the dangers the original pioneers faced as they established themselves.

Any one who is researching the events surrounding the Mayflower Pilgrims should definitely read this book. It has so much detail backed by extensive research. The story of Stephen Hopkins starts in England, where he left his wife and children in search of new land. After being shipwrecked and stranded for a period of time, the castaways were able to construct two small ships and leave the Island they were stranded on, and headed for their original destination. When they arrived in Jamestown they found complete disaster. After helping to do what he could in Jamestown, he returns to England only to find that his wife had died. This is just the beginning of his adventures. You must read to book to find out more!

As a genealogist I was thrilled to find this is a detailed and very readable review of Johnson's landmark research, with detailed nods to the work of others who helped him, and complete citations from some relevant original sources as well. Very convincing research, including suggested areas for further pursuit. Thank you!

Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for all your research and detective work. I descended from Stephen Hopkins through four ancestral lines - my mother was a Hopkins. I am also a Doty, Howland, Tully, Cooke, and Brewster descendant through my mother as well as Warren descendant through my father. Including the works in you appendices was extremely helpful. An enjoyable read as well as informative.

The book is divided into two parts.Part I is like reading a well written historical mini novel. I read all of it in one day. Of course when the novel is about your ancient ancestor trying survive two separate times in the new world, it has a personal impact. If Stephen Hopkins had died in either adventure, I wouldn't be here to post this.Part II is well documented genealogy stuff. Very dry and very boring, which is why I can only do a few hours of pure genealogy at a time.
