A first-rate reference. I was mainly interested in researching the Essenes. The book has a few maps, an excellent subject index and a scripture index which ties Biblical verses to the pages where they are footnoted in the text (extremely useful). The book has over 900 pages and would be difficult reading, except the font size and type make it quite legible and easy to skim. It is a sturdy hardback. I recommend this one.

The works of Philo are important to scholars of history and philosophy for a number of reasons, and are found in an accessible translation here.Jewish and Kabbalistic scholars will find early Neoplatonized commentary on the Jewish scriptures, while classicists will find useful comparative points regarding Roman practices, and philosophers will find useful developments of Plato's thoughts. This book really does have a great deal to offer many students of different disciplines. Christian scholars too will find a great deal of roots of early Church theology in this work as well.I would highly recommend the study of Philo to most people, and this is a good translation of his works.

I just received this excellent volume, and I'm already devoting way too much time to reading the text, reading more on line about Philo, and sending emails to others about this particular translation.My parish priest is currently focusing on some of the Wisdom literature in the Old Testament, and as an adjunct to these lessons, I decided to give Philo a try. Indeed, Philo is keenly interested in Wisdom. He describes the Tabernacle as an image of Wisdom. What is also of interest to me is Philo's adoption of a dualist view of the world. The body is evil to him. One can easily infer that Mani and the successor schools of Christian dualism were clearly sewing on fertile ground in the subsequent centuries.Philo writes as if he were speaking to a student, and this is only right as he would indeed have been imparting a great body of knowledge, as a true generalist, to students who have attached themselves to this man of learning who is the teacher of his school of philosophy. The reader too now gets to walk with this teacher.It is no wonder that Patristic writers would find much of Philo to be a great value, and much of what he concludes to be rejected too -- the dualistic view of man and creation being a prime example. Still, to see the imagery and language of the Hellenistic world in Philo's writing gives one insight into the thoughts, the idioms, the common language of the thinkers of the Grecco-Roman world. His use of the Hellenistic imagery, vocabulary, and methods of reasoning will be seen again, and taken to new (transformed)levels by the Church Fathers of Christendom over the next several hundred years. For Patristic scholars, Philo seems like something of a prototype.Philo speaks the language of Plato, Cicero, Seneca, and Aristotle. His religion is certainly different, but the world in which he lives is the same world, and he interprets, and divines the meanings of his Sacred Texts in the context of this world.While some translations of philosophical and theological works, especially from antiquity, are so wooden and stilted as to make the text too formidable for non-academicians, not so this translation. Philo is made approachable to this reader in large part due to the translation. Despite the amount of reading, the translation assures that the text is never off-putting. Would that all translations could be this readable.

There's lots and lots of micro-history in here. Kind of hard to follow sometimes. The print is small and crammed together so I can't read more than 10 pages at a time. Quite enjoyable though. Like going back in time. Would recommend if you're into this stuff.

Although this book is a bit lengthy and can be difficult to read, it is great for anyone who has a hunger for knowledge. Wonderful book filled with so much. Makes you question much of what we have been taught and told.

What a waste of money! My son spotted this 'book' at a book fair at school and said he really wanted it because of the 3 Pokeballs that came with it. Unfortunately the book fair ran out so Amazon to the rescue. We received this a few days later, and my son was so excited. Upon opening the package and actually seeing what this was, I felt like it was a huge waste of money, and packaging. We literally paid for packaging. The three pokeballs my son wanted were actually 3 erasers, that come apart and are too small to actually use as erasers. The balls have since disappeared under furniture to never be seen again.The book that comes with it, my son likes to look at. Overall, I wish I hadn't been duped, but this made my son happy so that was worth it.

My 6 year old loves it.

My son loves Pokémon. He loves playing with the erasers as they come apart.

Binding of book fell apart after a month.

My son loves it!

The Pokeballs are just cheap little erasers and the pages fell out of the book the first time we looked through it

I picked this book by chance , I very much enjoy horse themes and good stories. This book has both. While an Arab competing at eventing further than the U.S. Novice/training seems unlikely as well as a rider jumping thru the ranks to the upper end of the equestrian rankings , I still really enjoyed the story a great deal. I hope there are more stories to follow-even if not, this book stands well on its own. The writing is authentic, the voice is clear and focused. Details were there to support but not take away from the story. It's hard to write horse fiction for those that don't know horses without alienating those that do (know horses). I think this book did this quite well.

To me this was a long short story which I enjoyed very much. The main character took a piece of my heart and the story was heart warming. The author made all of the characters become real. The book ended too soon, wanted to know what happened to all the characters.

this was a very enjoyable read. I hope the author does write a sequel I would love to read more about Amber and her horse. Ruth Saberton continues to be one of my favorite authors.

Loved it! I adore horses - I have an Arab cross of my own - and I love reading just as much, but it can be difficult to find a horse book that really draws me in like this one did! I ABSOLUTELY DEMAND A SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!You are now officially on my list of favorite authors, Miss (Mrs.?) Ruth Saberton!A 13-year-old Girl With an Ambition Similar to Amber's (Becoming a Vet)

This was a lovely story with characters you can really care about. It was hard to put down once I started reading it.

A book that wrapped you in. The main character has had a hard journey and you are rooting for her the entire book. Hard situations that are finally wrapped into a happy ending.

Loved every minute of this book. Couldn't put it down!
