Although I have a long term happy marriage, I enjoyed reading about the different personality categories and theories of the best "matches" of different personality types. The observations in the book were very insightful. I love Helen Fisher, I've followed her speeches and got to know her while reading Why We Love and this new book did not disappoint. She really knows how to translate more complex biological terms into common words anyone can grasp and seriously can get you interested in science in a heartbeat. Her profound investigation mostly comprises several different theories and makes it easy to relate them to each other.I genuinely enjoyed this book and feel it would interest a lot of people who like well narrated non fiction (by this I mean the experience of reading it feels like she's telling a story that is easy to grasp).

I have lectured about relationships and how to understand people using "Why Him? Why Her?" in my university journalism classes, ordered copies for the campus bookstore, and had students take the amazingly accurate and revealing short form online quiz. This was always a favorite part of my classes because the information is factual, amazingly accurate--and useful! While Helen Fisher's style is breezy and engaging, the author includes statistical evidence and information to make this a trusted treatise on dating, why relationships fail, and why they last. To date, I have purchased five copies of "Why Him? Why Her?", made the mistake of loaning them out, and have never seen them again--the book is THAT good!

She is brilliant. Trust me. Buy it and you will understand the 4 personality types. Making the people you deal with regularly become easier or at least less frustrating. Even Ester Perel refers to Ms. Fischer’s personality paradigm in Perel’s State of Affairs.

I don't know how anybody could consider this dry reading! It is full of insights, great quotes, relevant anecdotes - and is just plain fun to read. Why him/why her - is every bit about our own personalities, as it is why we are attracted to others. Further more, the book delves into different partner personality combinations - exploring the pros and cons of different combos. I found it fascinating and pretty accurate based on my life experience. Thankfully Dr. Fisher is not rigid in her definitions and admits that our personalities are multifaceted - but it only makes sense that we each have a dominant personality characteristic. What's more fascinating, is that she attributes aspects of our personality to certain hormones and neurotransmitters - arguing that our exposure or sensitivity to these body chemicals helps shape and determine who we are... and she backs it up with intriguing anthropologic data. What a great way to connect psychology with medical science. Fascinating!

Excellent book! I'm about half-way through the book and it has helped me become more clearly aware of my personality traits. This is helpful in general but the context of the book is how our personalities interact with the personalities of those we meet, date and have relationships with.However, do not assume that another person with theoretically ideal scores on the test will automatically be your ideal partner. There are 15 questions on the test for each of the four personality categories. 60 questions will only result in a general idea of who a person is. There is much more to our personalities that is not revealed. A lady friend and I have what appear to be ideal scores but we'd never get along in a relationship because of some specific personality traits. So don't blindly read the book thinking that you will easily find the perfect match. But it should be very helpful.Even though I scored highly as an "Explorer", not everything that the author writes in describing Explorers is true of me. So, as I'm reading, I underline what I feel is true of me. A potential partner could skim through my copy of the book and get a good idea of who I am.Keep something else in mind. Although the author emphasizes a person's two highest scores, that doesn't mean that the lower two categories do not apply at all to a person. Otherwise some additional personality traits could be overlooked and they could be important aspects of a person's personality.

I love this book. It's an amazing read for everyone, but I would especially recommend this for young-adult readers who want to understand how to learn to live well after going through horrible experiences. All of us can relate to these human experiences but this book also reminds us how much we need to love each other.

It was good but not all the book linked into my kindle. Lost quite a bit of the last of each chapter.

Depressing!

This book tells the heartbreaking stories of three women who escaped sexual slavery and then went on to help others. It tells the stories of Somaly Mam, who was forced into prostitution in Cambodia, Minh Dang, whose parents sexually abused her as a child and then forced her into prostitution in the United States and Maria Suarez who was kidnapped and forced to be a slave to a man in California. There is a chapter at the end of the book that explains sex-trafficking and who it is happening to, where, why and how we can help to break the cycle. The stories are sad and tragic and show how the women involved in sex-trafficking are all victims. I like the Sweedish model of prosecution in which the people who buy sex are punished rather than the people who are being sold. I think that the US and the rest of the world should use this way of prosecuting the real criminals, who are the men, rather than the girls and women who are forced into having sex with men and who did not choose to do it and who usually do not receive any of the money that is paid for the abuse of their bodies.

Breaking Free is so well composed and full of power. Sher brings together three stories of incredible women who have survived unspeakable horrors in a way that is raw, jarring, and eye-opening. What makes this book great, though, is her ability to successfully make us aware of the all-out pervasiveness of trafficking while also providing us with hope through the testimonies of strong women and through practical, informative ways to get involved in ending this practice.As a teacher, I wish I could require all parents (and their children, when they're ready) to read this. I know it's making me hold my daughter a little tighter tonight, and I wish parents would educate themselves as to the dangers around their children. Abby Sher has done an amazing job putting together a valuable resource and an answer to the questions of what trafficking is, how it can happen, and why we can't ignore it.

This was an amazing reading experience!! I could not put this book down. My heart goes out to all the people that have ever endured anything of this nature. Then I realized that time is of our essence.I really appreciate how well written this book was done. Thank you!

A very readable and clear explanation.Best before The Beautiful Cure; both have their place.Does undersell the downsides. See vendor sites for adverse reactions, hints about what proportion are helped, what proportion are harmed, and what proportion go through being a patient and getting their hopes up with no benefit (per cancer type). Even with that information, it is hard to tell what the quality-of-life trade-off will be for any potential patient (time as patient + side effects vs. amount of extended life at what level of health).

I am a stage 4 cancer patient who has been receiving immunotheropy treatments for several months. This book put what I have been going through in a much needed historical perspective. I had no idea of the complex history of what may be the biggest breakthrough ever in cancer treatment. The author does a fine job of making highly technical material regarding microbiology understandable although a few things were simply beyond my comprehension. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer or has a loved one facing cancer treatment. Hats off to the wonderful researchers who refused to give up on the idea of immunotheropy even when the odds were stacked against them. And hats off to Charles Graeber for telling their story.

Well worth the read to understand what is happening in the labs and pharmaceutical companies relative to unleashing our immune system to fight cancer.

Although my profession has very little interaction with the medical profession, this book caught my attention. Once I started, I was hooked - possibly due to the fact that cancer has touched everyone's life in varied ways. Thank you for the stunning insight into these exciting possibilities! Such a great book. Truly riveting and fascinating. It's a page-turner that reads like a true crime story as the author explains why cancer has been so difficult to treat and cure. He writes for the layperson but does not dumb it down. Fascinating explanations of the immune system and why cancer has evaded its otherwise meticulous system for attacking disease. It looks at how different treatments thru the years have tried to enable the immune system to finally "see" cancer and attack it. Read this book, I promise you will learn so much and come away with a better understanding of this topic and the human body. It's at once a history, physiology, mystery, medical, and true crime book filled with poignant and thought-provoking portraits of patients who lived, those who died, and tenacious doctors who put on detective hats and saw connections others did not. I couldn't put it down. I imagine this book gives enormous hope to cancer patients and their families and it left me thinking we really are on the edge of conquering this.

This important and well-written book describes the efforts of brilliant and dedicated researchers to find new treatments against cancer, using immunotherapy, which offers great promise. It is hard to believe now, but the human immune system was once considered almost irrelevant to treating cancer, because of the disease's remarkable ability to avoid (at the cellular level) detection and action by our natural defenses. The author traces the courageous efforts of a few scientists and doctors to uncover some key secrets about the inner workings of our (incredibly complex) immune system. The "breakthrough" discoveries are clearly described, and make for fascinating reading. In simple terms, cancers often inhibit the "gas pedals" of our immune defenses, as well as activate the "brake pedals" which naturally exist to prevent excessive immune responses. Based on these discoveries, there are now numerous pioneering drugs being tested which hopefully will prevent and/or treat many kinds of cancers by enabling effective action by our immune system. This book reads like an exciting medical novel, but is all the more compelling because of the literally life or death stakes involved.

I'd like to give this beautiful book a higher rating. In what it is and what it does, it is very enjoyable and useful. But the term "encyclopedia" in the title is so patently false that it can't be allowed to be rewarded.
