A couple of years back I bought two low cholesterol cookbooks at a used book sale; one of them was put out by the American Heart Association. But since it was written in 1989, it was before the invention of "trans fats". So I decided to spring for another.I didn't want the Kindle version for $9, nor the paperback for $13. I went all out and bought the hard covered book for $26. If I'm going to use it much, the paperback will have a hard time surviving 5 years, and I find it hard to just flip through e-books and read them, especially cookbooks, where I want to flip back and forth. Just give me a real book and a pad of post-its, thank you.So I got this last Wednesday, and spent about 6 hours reading it. This is a huge cookbook, at around 700 pages. Maybe 450 to 500 pages are recipes, and the rest is verbiage about healthy eating and so forth. It's nearly twice the size of the earlier version which I have, with many more recipes, but it does lack some very vital information which was in the earlier version, such as how saturated fats translate into cholesterol in the body, and recipes for things like lowfat mayonnaise, and how to replace staples of life with healthier alternatives. This book, for example, instead of telling you that you can beat nonfat evaporated milk for a good whipped cream substitute, tells you to use the nonfat whipped topping from the freezer case at the supermarket (which tastes like vaseline to me). These are some serious flaws. The recipes seem to rely upon really amping up the spices to make up for the missing salt; also, many, many, many of their recipes call for bell peppers, to which I am allergic. If lots of peppers are vital for flavor, I'm kind of sunk. However, I have tried a couple of their recipes, and those were pretty good. If you're not a fan of spicy hot food, be very careful with the use of red pepper flakes, which also seem to be a staple of this cookbook.Overall, this cookbook does a pretty good job of telling you how to cook heart healthy meals. Long and short of it: Good, but not great.

HUGE selection of recipes sure to fit anyone's tastes, but no photos!!!! Photos offer such an inspiration to make a dish, and I miss those so much!!! I would've paid more for the book had they included those. Maybe they were trying to keep the costs down. If so, I can respect that, for sure. It's a very thick book and if you don't need photos, there's a ton here. If you need photos, you might be disappointed.

My wife and I ordered this cookbook as soon as I was released from the hospital. I had had a heart attack at age 58, and healthier eating--low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-sodium, smaller portions--was on the menu. It has now been more than six weeks, and we have eaten about 90 percent of our meals from this book. People ask me, "what do you miss most?" and I have nothing to say. The recipes have yielded such tasty meals that I truly never think about the fact that I'm not getting the salt or fat I was so used to.I recommend this book to anyone who needs or wants to eat healthy food. My wife did not have a heart attack, but she has chosen to eat exactly what I eat (and is losing weight, as I am, because of it) and is enjoying the food every bit as much as I am.Get this cookbook as soon as you can.

This has been a GREAT help. It's for my mom but everyone in my household has come down with something where we need a variation of this diet! I needed a diabetic diet and this meets our needs very well. What i didn't expect was this book doesn't treat you as if you already know how to do certain types of cooking. Online tutorials have not been kind to this newlywed. I've learned so much on top of getting to eat healthier! We've even trimmed down a bit thanks to recipes for homemade broths and seasoning mixes and various other staples for cooking in this book. (Try the taco recipes if you get this, my family loves how flavorful they came out.)Combine this book with a transition from store bought seasoning mixes with more than 100mg of sodium (not % but MG!! If you're also on a "under 1500mg of sodium" limit as well) and canned veggies to frozen and you're well on you're way to better health! (Purely my opinion as my body struggles with preservatives in canned products. I know not everyone can afford dropping cans from their lives. Even We don't buy fresh. I could go into detail but I'm reviewing the book not my life lol)Definitely something to look into, even if you don't have cardiac or diabetic issues!

Until I got this cookbook.I am only 31 years old. And after giving birth to my daughter 7 months ago (and a horrible 12 day hospital stay), I was told I had heart failure (cardiomyopathy). It was devastating. Then once I learned what eating too much sodium really does to me and causes breathing problems, I knew I really had to stick to my Doctor's orders of consuming no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day.I never thought I ate much sodium. I was the kind of person who rarley salted my food, I didn't eat fast food, I tried to get natural or organic ingredients, I even had unsalted butter at home. No one realizes that sodium is in EVERYTHING once you really look at it. So when you're faced with having to restrict your intake, it's daunting and depressing. I cried so many times thinking I'd never get to eat at a restaurant ever again. I'd never have good tasting food again.First I ordered the No-Salt cookbook. Hated it. Most bland food I've ever had. Then I tried this. Oh my god, it allows me to eat CHEESE and BACON! (Wisconsin girl here) I am telling you, you will not think you are eating low sodium meals with this cook book. Not only are the recipes low sodium, but low fat too. They really know how to bring out flavors without salt. My husband cooks recipes from this book every night for me, and even he likes it. I've only had a couple recipes so far that I didn't care for much. This is a winner! Also, look up the AHA Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook.

Before this year, I knew very little about the Korean War. Now I know a lot more about what is called “the forgotten war,” thanks to two books on the subject that I’ve read over the last two months. Earlier this week, I finished “This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War” by T.R. Fehrenbach.Fehrenbach tells his story primarily through the perspective of the individual soldiers who fought on the front lines of the war. He describes the living hell of some of the great battles of the war, including Seoul, Osan, Inchon, Imjin River, Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir, Bloody and Heartbreak Ridges, Pork Chop Hill, and others.Fehrenbach wrote “This Kind of War” about ten years after he served in Korea as an Army officer. Although doesn’t mention his Korean War experiences anywhere in his book, Fehrenbach’s disillusionment with how the war was fought at all levels fairly drips from each page. His main criticism is that the United States was very much unprepared to fight a major land war in Asia – or anywhere else, for that matter. The Truman Administration had spent the five years after the end of World War II gutting defense budgets, reducing military personnel levels, and depriving the armed forces of the essential equipment they needed in order to win. Soldiers – especially those stationed in Japan, the ones who would end up being sent to Korea – had lost their fighting edge due to inadequate training and soft living.Fehrenbach brings to life many of the most famous historical events of the war, including President Harry Truman’s firing of General Douglas MacArthur, the death of General Walton Walker in a motor vehicle accident, and – most interestingly – the plight of prisoners of war (POWs) on both sides. Relying on interviews with American POWs who survived captivity, Fehrenbach paints a devastating picture of the sub-human conditions these soldiers were forced to endure. The author also gives a detailed account of the uprising in the United Nations POW camp on Koje-do Island, and how that rebellion by North Korean and Chinese prisoners was suppressed.“This Kind of War” is an excellent account of the Korean War. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I learned a great deal from it. Highly recommended.

As a military history of the mid-cold war era, it is a well-written and concise history of Western (mostly American) military action in Asia. The intricacies of coupling warfare and diplomacy in Korea is heart-breaking. The forfeiture of American lives for ‘status quo ante’ is appalling.Which brings me to my personal point: did no one who got us into Viet Nam read this book? Was nothing taught in Military Colleges about what happened? Where were the Westmoreland’s at this time? The McNamara’s? The Kennedy’s?A land war in Asia with tenuous supply lines from the north, where people brought all equipment south by hand, foot, truck. Landscape not conducive to large scale mobilizations. An enemy that can live on 3 rice balls a day, survive hostile climates, with a feeling of righteousness.Am I describing Korea or Viet Nam?Sorry for the tirade. Read the book.

The book still deserves five stars based purely on content. It's a style of history writing that may strike many 21st Century Americans as preachy, grandfatherly, and stuffy. But Fehrenbach makes a decent case for his arguments and he's a first-rate writer, and his prose is quite lively. So I have no problem recommending the book, and do so with special enthusiasm either for aspiring young warriors (especially aspiring military officers) or for those interested in the history of history-writing (great insights into American thought in 1962, on the cusp of our increasing involvement in the Vietnam War).As of January 2015, however, the Kindle e-book version of this book is HORRIBLY FORMATTED. If I had the ability to rate this book's format apart from its content, I'd give it only one star. Almost every page has formatting errors, and while they're all distracting (and eventually very annoying), some of them are impenetrably confusing, substantively obscuring the author's meaning. I don't know whether the blame is Amazon's or the publisher's -- my guess is the latter -- but whoever was responsible for proofreading the conversion of this e-book should perhaps be sentenced to at least a choice between being fired and spending a weekend in a North Korean prison camp.

I have not read it in many years. I bought this copy to replace one I gifted to a friend. It is a good read for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of USA and United Nations involvement in world affairs. It also provides some insight into the disastrous consequences for the those who serve their country. Throwing troops in summer uniform into lethal winder conditions, with inadequate weapons and supplies is inexcusable. As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict I am happy to say that although we did not learn all the lessons of Korea, we did, at least, take much better care of our troops.

#354,882 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

One of my earlier bosses required that any idea, process, program, etc. be presented using both words and graphics. He wouldn't review anything that didn't have a picture showing the process or relationships of ideas. So I tend to be an Excel spreadsheet, data kind of person although I really think I need to give this up (laugh)....drawing a picture isn't my strong suit, at least not then. Other reviewers have commented on strengths. I really like this book in the way we are called to imagine our organizations relationally via a graphic (strategy map). I learned that my bosses demand for a picture was because the process of taking words and creating an image required a person to really think through the coherence, relationship, and logic of their ideas. Words in combination with graphics can tell a story that taps into people's imaginations and speaks to differing learning preferences (auditory versus visual). I like this book because it provides a framework for systematically understanding your organization and the relational aspects of how things fit together ultimately in support of your mission.

This offering is the 3rd and one of the most valuable, perhaps the key to Kaplan and Norton’s five book series on how the “Balanced Scorecard” can be used to develop a “Strategy Focused Organization” through “Strategy Maps” to achieve “Alignment” and the “Execution Premium.”The reason this reviewer considers Strategy Maps so valuable is that it so fully exposes this truly dynamic visual tool for describing and communicating an organization’s strategy. While all the books in the series have charts and figures this one has the most by far, 120 within its 438 pages. The book’s part 1 indicates different ways an organization can create value addressing customer, financial, internal along with learning and growth perspectives. Chapters show customer intimacy, product innovation, operational excellence, and standard platform pathways can be pursued. True to its subtitle, part 2 depicts the manner in which intangible assets including human capital, information technology, and organizational capabilities can be defined, described, measured and linked to value creation. Part 3 and 4 are devoted to giving instances and cases relating the building of strategies and strategy maps just as throughout the previous two sections (both business and non-profit/public examples are provided). This book clearly depicts the idea of strategy as hypothesis (e.g. the importance of choosing a particular set of capabilities in which to excel as proposed by Michael Porter). One can see the way these “strategy trees” lay out the logic of a business like a McKinsey “decision tree” presents determinations to be made or a Minto Pyramid arranges the supporting elements of an argument. For example, a strategy map on page 314 conveys the case of Ingersoll-Rand (with whom this writer has had some involvement) pictorially representing the then new “customer intimacy” strategy (e.g. like those described by Wiersma and Treacy). That map indicates important areas of financial performance (e.g. accelerate organic growth) and the customer experiences to be emphasized (e.g. provide the best solutions) as well as process excellence (e.g. drive growth through innovation) and people expertise (e.g. leverage cross-business synergies) that will be required to support that achievement. If the reader needs an explanation of the origins and fundamentals select Kaplan and Norton’s first book, “The Balanced Scorecard.” As one is seeking an overall approach description, choose their second book, “The Strategy Focused Organization.” When looking for a way to devise an enterprise strategy map and cascade that through the portfolio of business units and functions consider the fourth book, “Alignment.” For those at the point of bringing strategy and operations together in a continuous process for strategy management go with the fifth book, “The Execution Premium.”But if you are concerned with illustrating an organization’s strategy as well as the links and interactions necessary to “bring it to life” pick up “Strategy Maps.”

Another fine work by Kaplan and Norton. This is absolutely chock full of example and sample strategy maps. It is a great read AFTER you have read Balanced Scorecard and Strategy Focused Organization. It provides tons of ideas on how to assemble the various components of the strategy map, as well as revisits the selection of overall strategy themes. The BSC system is one of the best developed strategy tools out there, and Kaplan & Norton are the true gurus.

great book

Required reading for my Master's class. Good book.

Excellent book. Briefly brings structure and sense to many concepts.Aligns almost every aspect of an organization.I wish there were more details on the human and organizational capital or at least good references.

While the strategy map examples are helpful, this book is definately not worth the money nor the time to read it. Instead I recommend reading K&N's articles in the Harvard Business Review as you will get everything that you need -- do not bother with the book. And here is why:First, the book is very repetitive and while there are many examples of the strategy maps the distinctions between them are not always very apprent so if you have seen a strategy map you have by in large seen them all.Second, I believe that K&N did not write the book, rather it was put together by a ghost writer who borrowed just about every consulting phrase or description I have read in other books. Comments regarding things like the supply chain tend toward being so simplistic that they damage the credibility of the authors. I do not think we get an idea of what K&N think, rather than a ghost writer.Third, the strategy map does not address key issues associated with strategy deployment and management. The treatment of Information Technology is more akin to a 1970's view of technology than what companies are doing now. The structure, while supportive of the balance scorecard, does not provide a map on how you get from where you are to where you want to be.So take a big pass on this book, read the Harvard Business Review articles as they are much better and give you all you need to know. It is a shame since K&N's other work has been very powerful and influential.

very good book. it helped shape my ideas in a better way so i can contribute to the company i work for. i attend strategy meetings, and after reading this, i find myself adding more value than before.

I used this book to teach myself the basic theory for compressible flow, after focusing on incompressible flow in grad school and having never taken a course on compressible flow. I also got myself a copy of Anderson's Modern Compressible Flow, which I read alongside this text. Since Anderson seems to be one of the more popular texts for the subject, I'll give my thoughts on the two here.I want to say I much preferred this book over Anderson's for two reasons. First, a US edition of Anderson's text costs an order of magnitude more than Liepmann & Roshko (and it certainly isn't an order of magnitude better). Second, L&R is more concise, heavy on derivations, and careful in discussing the physics, while Anderson relies more heavily on example problems. For this reason, I think Anderson is probably more appropriate for an undergrad course, but personally I prefer the former. (If you do want to get Anderson, I recommend the international edition for ~$30).Anderson also emphasizes more "modern" aspects of compressible flow, such as chemical reactions and CFD. But, despite making a big deal about this in the introduction, he relegates a rather small part of the book to these topics. On the other hand, L&R include almost as much information on the chemical reactions found in hypersonic flows. If this is important to you, I still recommend L&R as a primer on compressible flow theory over Anderson, since it will more quickly prepare you to delve into more specialized texts like Zeldovich & Raizer. The same goes for CFD. Although Anderson discusses computational aspects more than L&R, I think you're better off going from L&R to Toro's text if this is something you care about. That said, I would recommend Anderson's text for certain situations. If you are looking for more of the "flavor" of compressible flows, want to be able to solve a few problems and have the basic idea, but aren't so concerned about understanding all the mathematical nuances and don't plan on moving on to more advanced texts on the subject, get Anderson. Liepman & Roshko is an excellent part of a flow library, but Anderson is arguably a better one-stop basic reference.

The book is an excellent reference, and the text/printing is better than most Dover books. Amazon thought that throwing the book in a flat pack bubble wrap with other heavy objects was a good idea. The book arrived with a corner all messed up. It is like they do not care if an item arrives damaged. In the past Amazon has used these cardboard sort of sleeve things for books that are not perfect, but they are much better than just tossing the book in loose with other items. I need it for a class so i will have to live with it. A couple of days pressed under another few books should make it usable.

My professor recommends this book for its conciseness and depth. Due to the size of the book, it cannot cover all the details, but I think it covers all the theory well. This is the first book I pull to check some equations/theory for compressible flowThe downside is that there are no example problems, this is purely a reference text (not a learning textbook).

Fantastic overview of gas dynamics. Don't spend the money on a new text book. This one is complete with schlieren photography of experiments. It has been great for teaching and great for a reliable technical reference.

Book as advertised. This was on old text for me back in 1967. Wanted to read it again.Good job. Thanks.

Classic text!!

Its just what I wanted for my academics... It covers almost all the topics from my syllabus.

A classic!
