Review

“Ms. Armstrong’s book comes alive in the sections where she explores cancer’s human toll . . . She also captures the excitement of researchers as they come upon eureka moments.” ―The Wall Street Journal“She covers every aspect of cancer development, giving us a sense of how this evasive illness persists, even in the face of modern medicine . . . As Armstrong paints a picture of hope in the book, she apologizes for the slow progress that medical science makes. With her optimistic outlook, we can sleep better at night knowing that someone’s at the helm.” ―San Francisco Book Review“As in the best travel writing, it’s not the destination that’s important here, but the journey. This is not only a story about the gene on chromosome 17, nor only about the nature of cancer, but also about how science works.” ―The Boston Globe“A succinct, accessible study of humanity's genetic bulwark against cancer.” ―Nature“A brilliant narrative that captures the essence of the scientific challenges faced by researchers in this pursuit and the progress that has been made in our understanding of p53.” ―Science Magazine“Armstrong’s book is genuinely engrossing on many levels, and the story is very well told. It has considerable depth, yet sufficient clarity to be able to reach a wide audience.” ―Cell Magazine“Armstrong adroitly untangles the complex story of this impressive gene.” ―Booklist

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It is as advertised, a book focused exclusively on one gene and how it relates to cancer. The author goes into great detail of how the gene was discovered and how it was originally misdiagnosed as a gene which causes cancer before its true nature was discovered. Of particular interests was the chapter, “The Smoking Gun” which discussed the discovery of how smoking caused a mutation at a specific location in this gene. It is this mutation which make people susceptible to cancer and this discovery which eventual led the cigarette companies to admit the truth. This was a particularly quick read. I would have preferred if the book strayed beyond the P53 gene and discuss more of the other genes related to cancer. Although well written, I am not sure there was enough information about just this one gene for an entire book. When reading the book and following through the scientific discoveries, the author would at times bring up a new scientist/researcher which she would then introduce in the book. She went into significant detail not only about the researcher’s life, but also about her interview with the researcher. She would discuss details about his house, expression property, etc. (almost like filler material). I found this to be more of a distraction and after reading this, I needed to go pack a few pages to remember what the topic of research was being discussed. Despite this one critique, I found this book to be very good and would recommend it to anyone interested in cancer research.

Fun and informative, this is worth a read. There is essentially no science here, and after a while the obligatory human interest nuggets which are the prelude to each new topic become a little irritating. P53 is an incredibly relevant protein in cancer and aging, but too little of its scientific contradictions and complexities come across. If the outcome of this read is to provoke curiosity but not satisfy it, it succeeds. This is in itself is a worthwhile objective, but fundamentally disappointing.

“… a gene that goes by the prosaic name of p53 - bestowed on it simply because it makes a protein with a molecular weight of 53 kilodaltons.” – from p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODEp53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE by Sue Armstrong seems to be a reasonably comprehensive overview of the topic that even those with but a modicum knowledge level of genetics and biochemistry should find readable and comprehensible. The author jumps back and forth in time to show how the aggregate work of a multitude of researchers accumulated and built on itself to arrive at the understanding we have today about p53. This lends the narrative a choppiness which might have been ameliorated at the conclusion if Armstrong had provided a concise summary of the scientific findings to date. This she failed to do and the book suffers somewhat for its absence.p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE is, however, a commendable contribution to the popular science genre.

Although I have been somewhat familiar with the p53 literature for a number of years, I was greatly informed and entertained by this narrative; the author does a fine job of weaving the science with the mystery of this extremely important transcription factor. The book hits on so many areas of cell and molecular biology in a very understandable and human way that I am even considering adopting it as supplemental reading for my college-level intro to cell biology and genetics course.

Some nice but extraneous minutia of the people involved in p53's discovery, but their achievements and the science of p53 itself are pretty clearly explained. After reading it, you get a good sense of how important p53 is as a target for future cancer therapies. The book makes you realize the complexity of the p53 (and presumably other tumor suppressor gene) pathways. Kevetrin is one compound with promise to target p53. There is already hope.

Interesting story. I am an oncologist (cancer specialist), and so I would have appreciated MORE esoteric detail. I think most careful lay readers would be satisfied with the detail provided, and will understand what was being described in the book. The degree of technical detail remind me of a Stephen Hawkins book on the cosmos.Armstrong does a nice job of describing the history of p53, from its discovery to the present time. It helped me with perspective, and was a very interesting, if not comprehensive review. It is absolutely true that p53 is one of the most important cancer related abnormalities in humans. Unfortunately, it is a tough nut to crack, from a therapeautic standpoint. I think people interested in one of the most important causes of cancer will enjoy this book.

Generally a good overview of recent research involving discoveries about the properties of the p53 gene and its role in repairing damaged cell DNA. I took off one star, however, because the book seemed poorly organized and difficult to follow.

Fascinating biography of the "guardian of the genome" and sheds light on cancer research. I enjoyed it especially read in tandem with the Emperor of all Maladies: a Biography of cancer.

I'm an old guy--75--retired professor of English, who actually remembers the Manson Helter-Skelter stuff when it was permeating the culture, but if you want to read this excellent book as a primer on Mansonism you will miss the point. I read it nonstop during an eight-hour car trip from having seen my family (including my daughter, of course), and the portrait of this Anna rang completely true to me. Well, true in the way Holden Caulfield rings true to me . . . Ms. Umminger's book is loaded with threads of family and American culture, and she is an author who knows how not to leave them lying around loose. The characters are memorable, the family relationships instantly recognizable, and the prose . . . well, as my professional academic work was primarily in contemporary poetry, I must say the prose is nowhere "prosaic." Smart, often funny, but always just right. I said I read it nonstop, didn't I? . . .

American Girls is a book that leaves the reader wrestling with and thinking about several challenging ideas. Anna, the main character, is complex and sometimes not even likable, but it is fascinating to watch her grapple with questions of why the Manson girls and their looks get more attention than the victims and how to love the maddeningly imperfect people in your life. Umminger is constantly forcing Anna (and the reader) to look at the people she encounters, whether it's members of the Hollywood B-club, the Manson girls, her family, LA, or herself and somehow make sense of all their internal and external contradictions. The book is definitely edgy and dark at times - the nature of the subject matter is not always easy (everything from the Manson murders to her sister's dysfunction), but it's not sensationalized - it is there to be examined in all its tragedy and complexity. The author's writing style provided several opportunities to stop and just appreciate how she had turned a phrase, and there were times that I had to stop reading To work through my own thoughts and feelings mom an incredibly messy question about people or culture that Anna falls into almost stumblingly and is able to ask but not really answer. A book that will be appreciated best by older teens and adults who enjoy YA literature.

Having read some of the lower ratings here, these are my thoughts:Umminger assumes intelligence in her reader - that we make the connections that are deeper than a 15 year old mind could understand, that we know about Manson. This was not a book about Manson or the girls; it was about the effect of the murders - both how much and how little. It made the point that we live in a world so dark that even something so horrific had a minimal impact in the long run. That we don't live in a world much different than the one that facilitated that cult. It's a book about choices and their outcomes and how we live with or live up to the consequences. How we can see a little into our future or a parallel and stop ourselves from becoming something we can't live with.I loved Anna. Her voice was so genuinely a 15 year old. All the characters read very real, for better or worse. As I said on Twitter, it read like water - I just glided through the story and was completely pulled along.

It took some fits and starts, thanks to an overly busy summer, but I finally finished this fantastic first novel. It manages to be profoundly insightful about the macro (America, the 60s, L.A., pop culture) and the micro (one teenage girl's life, standing in for our own lives in many ways) all at once. Plus, it's really funny and entertaining. I loved it.

This is such a fabulous exploration of a teenage adventure. The protagonist's voice is witty, self-aware, and just hilarious. Who hasn't wanted to run away from their crazy mom and steps and fly to LA? The ultimate teenage fantasy, but it's also a brilliant and insightful cultural critique about femininity, about criminality (the Mansons), and about Hollywood culture. Umminger is whip-smart, based on her characters, and I laughed out loud a lot more than I anticipated. Great fun, great read.

At times I felt like I could really believe and relate to Anna's voice as a teenage character, and at other times I felt she was more cynical, intelligent, and culturally aware than any other fifteen year old I have ever met. This was a smart book and was very well written. It tied together lots of ideas and threads neatly. I truly loved the last sentence, and I also appreciated that material for a book club is referenced as available online.

What a fantastic read! This book is a lovely combination of exploratory young adult fiction and deep Americana. Highly recommend.

While I believe this book was written for a YA audience, it is so sophisticated a moving that I believe all ages of readers can relate. There's a brilliance to Umminger's writing that swept me off my feet.

I found this novel to be good historical fiction but I have also come to the conclusion after reading all the reviews that one either has an appetite for this style of writing or subject matter or one doesn't. I do!Were there things I would have phrased differently? Of course, but this is not my novel and when I read another author's work, I check my need for control at the door and go along for the ride. I have respect for the tremendous effort it takes to produce a piece of work such as this and I look forward to the next two in the trilogy. But I will agree that this is not a "light" or "easy" read. Many have stated it is too long; too many characters to keep track of and of course, the obligatory comment about "contrived bedroom scenes." People have sex and it is how we all get here and given this is a period of time when producing an heir was the main duty of a high-born woman, Ms. Penman, writing fiction, has license to speculate and I did not feel the novel was rife with excessive sexuality.Others have complained regarding the similarity of names and the names in general of characters, such as Amabel, Ranulf, Rainard, Annora, Gilbert, Maude and Maud. Ms. Penman did go with the vernacular of Maude instead of Matilda due to King Stephen's queen being named Matilda, too, and the above were names people had at that time. Given that English royal history has a plethora of Richards, Georges, Henrys, Edwards and Elizabeths, is Penman supposed to make changes in order to ease the attention span of a modern reader? That would be folly in that she would alienate all of her fans who are interested in accuracy and appreciate the amount of research she puts into her work. If one can't accept these realities of writing about history or if one finds it too taxing to keep track of a multitude of characters, I would suggest one not pick up a Penman novel.Another reviewer suggested perhaps the novel would be more interesting had Henry's parents not been included; that the back and forth "bickering" between Maude and Stephen was not interesting. However, that nearly twenty-year War of the Cousins is what put Henry on the throne of England and began the Plantagenet Dynasty. To exclude these characters would decrease the impact of the story. All that we are in the present is shaped by decisions and actions from those before us, even if some of the people were annoying, mean or with feet of clay. Henry did not spring fully-formed from the forehead of Zeus and suddenly appear on the throne. A great deal of angst, suffering and political maneuvering took place first.I thoroughly enjoyed the length, breadth and detail and highly recommend this novel to anyone who shares my tastes.

I am not going to go over what's in the book...description is pretty spot on you are just reading 700 pages of details. I agree with reviewer before me, you either like this sort of writing or you do not. Writing itself is not "loud" it does not make your heart race when you pick up a book in excitement, it does not make you want to stay up till crack of dawn to find out what happened...what it does make you do is enjoy reading...the best way to describe this is: Its a perfect book for a fall/winter time, when you don't want to get out of your soft pants and its a lazy slow weekend, this is the book that you sit surrounded by pillows with a hot cup of tea and you read until you are ready to take a nap or fall asleep...I have a very "high energy" job, and this is the kind of book that helps me unwind at the end of the day, when i read 10-15 pages my mind slows down and i emerge into this world which is at a much slower pace... this book has fights, crime, love, etc...but it is not in "bright and shiny" colors it is in subtle, gentle way that does not rile you up, some book suck you in and you become part of that book - this is not one of those books, here you are more of an observer....i find this book perfect for my taste, before moving to book 2 i will probably read something more "adventure/crime" just to clean my pallet and give me a chance to want to get back to calm world of Sharon Key Penman.

A truly incredibly well done historical novel. I have learned more about 12th life & English history than I ever did while attempting to read some of the dry history books.Although "When Christ and His Saints Slept " is historical fiction, the descriptions of life, war, peace, death, and the male dominated world opened my eyes wide.I found I was compelled to keep reading. I could explain or comment upon every aspect of the book, but I prefer to keep brief and not ruin others ' reading with spoilers, nor do I wish to copy out a description of the reading...the selling page and description takes care of that marvelously.I must recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in 12th century history. You might be surprised what you enjoy learning!

The heirs to the throne of England and more, the Plantagenet dynasty is a veritable gold mine for authors who seek to bring these real people to life today. I love historical biographical fiction, and this book doesn't disappoint. This first novel tells of how the Plantagenet dynasty had its beginnings, introducing the disputed crown passed on to King Henry I's heir, the Empress Maude, but stolen by her cousin Stephen of Blois, and their years long struggle that left England in turmoil, destroying the country and people they each wanted to rule. Love, betrayal, loyalty, and duty are interwoven into the story and conflict abounds, while superstition and the attitudes of the time create this perfect storm of events that ultimately lead to Maude's son, Henry, becoming Henry II of England. The second book of the series covers the reign of King Henry II and his infamous Queen, Elinor of Aquitaine, and their tempestuous marriage that gave rise to the formidable Plantagenet Dynasty.

This could have been a good book, but I am struggling to finish it. It is way too long, made so by pointless and irrelevant musings by the characters over their motives, sometimes for paragraphs, even pages. Also, the author seems compelled to show us that the Medieval language was different. If one does not know that, a glance at Chaucer will make it clear with less annoyance than Ms. Penman's annoying quirk of inserting "mayhap" every few pages, and "for certes" at least twice a page (seems like). The book could have used a dramatis personae and a few dozen maps as I was mostly lost in the endless battles and the vast array of lords and knights who fought them, changing sides more often than their underwear (in those days anyway). One suspects that Ms. Penman may have been her own editor. If not, mayhap she should replace the one she has, for certes.

I used this card almost daily while on vacation in the Bahamas. It was a great reference to give me a general idea of what fish I was seeing while snorkeling. Keep in mind that it will not have every fish possible but it was great card to throw in our bag.

I understood this card to be a map. It is too small to use as a map. Good details and interesting dive locations but impossible to locate due to size.

Just as promised .

Perfect dive card for your dive log. When it comes to logging dives after a long day in the water, these cards make it easy to locate the dive sites you visited.

Nice features, but too small to use in classroom.
