Williams' "Otherland" is one of my absolute favorite sci-fi epics. But it has to be said--this is not, in any strict genre definition of the word, a novel. This is the first installment in a prose epic of stunning scope and narrative/intertextual skill, but many of its greatest payoffs don't come to fruition until the end of the final volume. So perhaps not the best choice for slow readers or readers who don't enjoy extreme long-format storytelling. However, Williams remains one of the best prose stylists in traditional epic fantasy/science fantasy, his characters are compelling, and the plot and worldbuilding pack a bone-chilling punch.

I have enjoyed this "series" of books, however, calling it a series is a bit misleading. None of the first three books has an ending that is in any way satisfying. They're not seperate stories, it's one long saga. It's well written, but VERY busy. Each book feels like you've read 3 or 4 separate books. I counted in the middle of book two, and there were 14 separate individual story lines going all at once, back and forth, and then even more get added. It's a bit much, like the author couldn't decide what he wanted to write about, so wrote about everything. Each book is more like 20-30 short stories, with all the short stories having the same 20 cast member, and tied together in a way that, 3/4 of the way thru book 3, still isn't entirely clear. And yet, I've kept reading, so there's definitely something there.

First of all, I have read hundreds of Kindle books. I love Kindle books. I read books because I want to be entertained. You would think an author would write with that in mind. But when I trudge halfway through the book and still cannot figure out what the heck is going on, that's not entertaining. That may be some weird idea of artistry, but if so, offer the work in an art gallery; not a bookstore. I rarely give up on a book, but I gave up on this one. I won't be buying any more of this artists work.

Stimulating and challenging, one has to use one's brain reading this. I enjoy the fact that it is set originally in South Africa and yet is modern fantasy - the juxtapostion of a land which is not considered advanced in the average person's mind with a highly advanced society in the future is lovely, teasing at us and at our preconceptions. This is also felt in the language of the characters - Long John definitely speaks a primitive form of English, while living in a society well in the future, with a daughter teaching in a university with a degree in engineering...

Fascinating, complex tale of the human spirit and desires, technology, socio-economic issues......I've enjoyed every selection I've ever read from this author, he creates such realistic and relatable characters and stories, even thought they're often found in alien and unfamiliar settings. He can really paint a picture with words, and this series is definitely among my favorites. Prepare to be sucked in and swept away once you get the initial story set-up out of the way!

Tad Williams takes his sword and sorcery skills and applies them to a near future adventure, while simultaneously inventing a new genre. This gripping read involves enormous wealth and murder all tied to the fantastic virtual world of Otherland. Meanwhile in RL (real life), Renie tries to save her brother, who she believes has been made comatose by the mysterious Grail Brotherhood, all the time at a breakneck pace.Be prepared for a long read. The four books series must all be read to get to ending.Highly recommended and one of my favorite books

In many ways, this is an unconventional work.It is not a series of four books. It is one big honking book published in four chunks. In pacing and plotting, it reminds me of a 100-issue run of a comic book. There's a continuously unfolding series of events, building out from the center, but not necessarily toward ever increasingly dramatic climaxes. What Williams has done here is ingenious. He really hasn't created any new plot devices or directions; you'll see few things here that you've never ever seen before. What he has done is to combine them all.Sure, we saw (for just one example) human minds wired into vast virtual reality in the Matrix, but we have no idea how they got there. Plenty of government conspiracies, plenty of power-mad scary guys. But ordinarily these works get fuzzy around the edges, and the writer asks us to accept that some things just ARE so he can get on with the main story. What Williams does is shuffle these several different novels together and set them up to lean on each other. And where other authors follow a narrative thread only so far and then say, "Well, yeah, there's another story over there, but we don't have time for it, so come on back here," Williams shows us all of everything, and shows us some combinations of plot elements that we might never have imagined. If you like reading these multivolume works for the enormous drama and a payoff whose operatic grandeur is proportional to the page count, you may nod off around book three here. And the characters are moving and effective, few stick in your head weeks after you've finished the work. But what Williams gives us instead is a vast, far-ranging, multi-character, multi-multi-themed tapestry that is enormous in scope and which has to be walked over a section at a time.

This is the first book in Tad Williams's Otherland Series (there are four in total) and it's great. This book takes off at a fast pace and never lets up. The characters are very well crafted and the situations (especially the little news blurbs at the beginning of each chapter) seem like they are not that far-fetched.The series takes place in a somewhat dystopian future (perhaps 25-50 years from now) where the bulk of people spend a fair amount of time in virtual reality. As you might imagine, this has ramifications for the character's real lives. Definitely worth the read.

From Library Journal

Believing with Plato that "tales which the young first hear should be models of virtuous thought," former Secretary of Education Bennett ( The De-Valuing of America , LJ 4/1/92) has produced a McGuffey's Reader for the Nineties. The author draws upon a variety of literature ranging from biblical stories to political legends and speeches to illustrate the catalog of virtues--self-discipline, compassion, work, responsibility, friendship, courage, perseverance, honesty, loyalty, faith--that he believes are foundational to strong moral character. Most selections are introduced by a short thematic note, e.g., "an honest heart will always find friends." Bennett's elevation of these virtues to moral absolutes renders the book's view of morality rather simplistic. In addition, the collection's lack of attention to women's and non-Western voices encourages the view that the experience of virtue belongs primarily to Western males. Still, this anthology will prove popular with some readers. Recommended for public libraries.- Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Westerville P.L., OhioCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

The principled former secretary of education has culled a selection of poems and stories to be read aloud in hopes of passing on specific virtues to the younger generation. The selected works appear under chapter titles such as "Compassion"; "Responsibility"; "Friendship"; "Courage"; "Perseverance"; and "Faith." As artificial or perhaps self-righteous as this project may seem, it is effective. The old stories from the Bible, from great authors, and from folklore do exert a charm and send a message that will stir families to discuss or contemplate the issues set forth. It truly is a treasury, with some tales so brief they can be read at the dinner table. Perfect bedtime, anytime family reading. Denise Perry Donavin

This book is a must have for all families to learn what is most important in life. This book teaches about the importance of responsibility, courage, compassion, loyalty, honesty, friendship, persistence, hard work, self-discipline, and faith. This book would be a valuable tool for parents to be able to answer all those most difficult questions that children tend to ask. It will help children develop a strong and moral character as they grow. This book has stories, commentaries and poems from some of the greatest classical authors of all time ranging from simple stories of philosophy from Aristotle and Plato to stories of Booker T. Washinton, and poems fro Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson and fables from Greek mythology and Aesop. These are some of the greatest works of literature.

I've read this book and consider it a classic and a great book for parents or grandparents or aunts and uncles to share with the young ones in their lives. It can be used as a story book to share with children or as something that a child can read themselves and learn valuable lessons about life. I have bought this book twice, once for a nephew and again for his daughter. I know she will love this book for a long time and she may even read it to her younger brothers until they are old enough to read it themselves.

The collection of stories compiled and presented is a reasonable collection of very moral, long held historically representative, and significant teachings. The collection is a cross section from many incoming cultures to the Western World and the eventual melting-pot called america, but there are deep lessons and salient central truths upheld in all. A veritable strong hold in the field of "Self-Help" and also the basis for relationship between individuals, individual to groups, almost every role and responsibility receives representation and guidance.Refer to the table of contents: Self-Discipline; Compassion; Responsibility; Friendship; Work; Courage; etc...Who, upon any reasonable self-encounter or introspection could not use a shot in the arm with such fundamental characteristics. This compilation by Mr. Bennett is a gem made of gems, indeed a treasury overflowing and edited with careful considerations. Knowledge Worth far beyond the price. Sit down and have a fulfilling read, share with your best friends. Practice on some who are not so close today and see what great culminates from an exercise of good knowledge, and experience.Daniel Grise -Dickinson, TX

When I was in 3rd grade I had to have this book. I could never remember what it was called until I called my mom and we talked about it for hours. I bought for my daughter who is in 4th grade. Velveteen rabbit and lots of other great stories in this! Great lessons! I hope my kids will cherish and remember this like I do!

This book reminds you of how to conduct your life with decency and honor. It's refreshing to read things that make you think of "others" instead of focusing on self, self, self, selfies, and selfishness. It always amazes me how much kids love the stories within this book as they are presented with clear ideas of how to think and behave with a conscience. Something sorely lacking these days.

This is a very valuable book for anyone. Its reputation stands by itself. I honestly wish adults would read this book. I do not see many of these virtues present in adults. I believe children should be taught them but I do not see how adults can grow up and be so absent from their lives. I am reading it by myself, apart from my children, and I still see areas I need to 'mature'

I had lost my original that I had years ago, so I was delighted to receive a new one. I love the reading into different categories. It is a must for anyone who appreciates wonderful writings.

As we live with our rather small wallet in a rather small apartment, we are always trying to find ways to live minimal and frugal. A book such as this, which holds within its covers Aesop's Fables, historical documents, speeches by prominent historical figures, fairy tales, folk tales, and poems which are easy to memorize and a delight to hear your barely-three-year-old rattle off as she sings to herself in play...I can only encourage it further. We have it on the shelf by her bed, and each night she asks for a story from it. Last night was "The Frog Prince" from Hans Christian Anderson, and I can hear her re-enacting it with her figures in her room as I write this. I look at this book as a sort of springboard for further reading. If this-or-that author interests us, we make a library trip out of. I have delighted in reading the Edgar Guest poem collection, for example, and discovered a new appreciation of Ralph Waldo Emerson. In school, when we HAD to study him, I had no appreciation, of course. I was so ungrateful, hah.)

I have read scores of books dealing with alternative and holistic based healing modalities and I can honestly say that I have never encountered a book quite like Dr. Carey and Inez Perry’s The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation. This volume is actually two books, the first book is by Dr. Carey and outlines the basic cell salt theories. The second volume is by Perry and this book goes into minute detail and is an expounded expose on the philosophy of Carey. To say this book is amazing and enlightening does not even begin to do the contents of this book justice. Perry brilliantly exposes and explains the deeper gnostic healing codes contained within the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman myths and the doctrines of Christianity and how these directly correlate to a higher form of astrology that provides a bio chemical blueprint for the human body. Perry shows how each sign of the zodiac correspondences to a particular chemical compound found in the human body, there are a total of twelve, and these basic salts are the foundation of life. Perry proposes the theory that the root of all illness stems from a deficiency of a combination of these cellular salts. This book will expand your thinking and understanding about health and wellness and truly provide the key with how to initiate true salvation by supplying the correct cellular salts so that the body obtains chemical perfection and functions on its highest possible plane. This book is the holy grail of all healing modalities and is the only health and wellness guide one will ever need.

Excellent information and foundation for all forms of astrology, but particularly for those interested in self-healing and the foundations of esoteric medical astrology dealing with the essential minerals and how the lack of them affects the way we think, act, and manifest in each area of our lives. Provides the hidden (esoteric) meaning of the bible and could release the individual from many bondages which one's culture and family make it difficult to release oneself. This work can assist the higher mind to work on releasing oneself from unnecessary bondages.

Super disappointed that none of the charts and diagrams, that the book refers to being contained in the book, are NOT in the book. Otherwise, the content is interesting and may or may not be true.

I'm a professional Astrologer, and long-time student of 'Alchemy'. While Astrology is easy for me, Alchemy has been written of in such an obscure manner that I have had a difficult time understanding the 'bottom-line' of its philosophy.Well, NO MORE! This book, in one fell swoop, explains Alchemy so simply that I am shocked at the obscuration in previously written tomes. However, looking at the time-period of those writings, I can see why... for, what Alchemy actually is, would have been construed by the 'Church' as absolute heresy... punishable by death.Imagine that... instead of 'GOD' fixing what ails you, you can heal yourself using the 'brains' GOD gave you and the knowledge required of attaining true health, (as is explained in this book)... hence, who needs the 'Church'? No wonder they claimed 'Alchemy' as heresy. If people today knew of the information contained in this book, they, (the 'Church'), and the pharmaceutical companies would be out-of-business forthwith. I shudder to contemplate all of the needless suffering over the ages because of the Church's denouncement of Alchemy, and all so they could keep their stranglehold on humanity. Shameful.Anyway, I was so pleased to get not only the 'bottom-line' of Alchemy, but the more esoteric links of Alchemy to Astrology. This, alone, is worth the price of admission in being able to delineate a Chart more deeply... especially in terms of 'health'.The only negative comment I have about the book is the lack of explaining just how to diagnose, using one's Astrological Chart... nor, what dosages of the Cell Salts one should use, or for how long. Alas, being a dowser myself, I am presently using a Pendulum to determine such. Almost all books on Pendulums will have a 'Bio-Chemistry' chart contained therein for such purposes. In the final analysis, I cannot say enough about this book. It wraps up, in a perfect package, the Etymology of words, (with fabulous Bible references--Chapter & Verse); the Astrological linkages for a deeper understanding of the Bible, and the Philosophy of Alchemy in plain English.Buy it... you won't be disappointed.

Super interesting. Ancient wisdom that is not taught in our modern life. I also bought Hylands Biosplasma Tablets to complement the teachings of the book. I have noticed some changes as a result: quicker healing time for minor scratches, bruises and hangnails and the age spots on the backs of my hands have disappeared.

I am taking the salt for my zodiac sign and it is helping. Nothing big right away, just that I can tell something is a tad different, but nothing I can put a finger on exactly. Time will tell. My issues over the years do match the salt assigned, which I found interesting. This book has tons of how the body relates esoterically and how that affects physical. The guy must've been a walking encyclopedia there is so much info in here. I bet his other books are worth getting too. This paperback does NOT have a pullout chart. You have to go by the one on the front cover. There is another b&w one inside, but not very legible. It is more esoteric/astrology than "if you have this, take this" kind of book. I love finding old books like this because you find out things before "modernization" wipes out lots of knowledge as foo foo. Ha! Turns out we are needing that knowledge now because we are finding it applies more than we thought it did before the corporations took over educating us.
