Parker Palmer’s graceful little book LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK is the best work I’ve ever read on discernment and vocation. In six chapters and just under 120 elegantly written pages, Palmer presses home the point that vocation emerges from within us and that we must listen carefully to our own lives if we are to discover it. Taking on someone else’s concept of calling or subjecting ourselves to an external and alien set of values and objectives will do violence to ourselves and to our usefulness—Palmer would probably avoid the word—to our community and our world. Throughout, the author’s rooting in Quaker patterns and rhythms is evident, but this book is anything but sectarian and will be welcomed—indeed, has been welcomed, for it was published in the year 2000—by readers of many faiths and perhaps of none.Chapter I, ‘Listening to Life’, argues that one’s life is worthy of study and profoundly worth listening to. ‘The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient, savvy, self-sufficient, and yet exceedingly shy. If we want to see a wild animal, the last thing we should do is go crashing through the woods, shouting for the creature to come out. But if we are willing to walk quietly into the woods and sit silently for an hour or two at the base of a tree, the creature we are waiting for may well emerge, and out of the corner of an eye we will catch a glimpse of the precious wildness we seek.’In his second chapter (‘Now I Become Myself’), Palmer initiates in earnest the autobiographical transparency that he will sustain through the book, lending to his lines an authenticity that is arguably their most compelling feature. After having tried and failed over several episodes to forge a sense of vocational and personal identity, Parker writes that ‘(t)today I understand vocation quite differently—not as a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just beyond my reach but accepting the treasure of true self I already possess. Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.’The author urge us not to ‘wear other people’s faces’ and to realize that ‘(t)he deepest vocational question is not “What ought I to do with my life?” It is the more elemental and demanding “Who am I? What is my nature?”.’Yet Palmer does not imagine that this discovery of one’s true self occurs often without pain. ‘Most of us’, he avers, ‘arrive at a sense of self and vocation only after a long journey through alien lands … before we come to that center, full of light, we must travel in the dark. Darkness is not the whole of the story—every pilgrimage has passages of loveliness and joy—but it is the part of the story most often left untold.’ This ultimate qualifier is another item that, to this reader’s ears, lends the ring of truth to Palmer’s adventure. I say this because my own journeying after true vocation has, like Palmer’s, led me through both sunlight and darkness, yet I cannot say that any of the miles traveled has been entirely dark, entirely bleak, and certainly not entirely regrettable. Unlike many more mechanical treatments of the topic, Palmer’s notion of vocational discovery leads him to value the path rather than merely the destination. One finds, in this second and longest of Palmer’s chapters, refreshingly important roles to be played by fear, failure, and ordinariness. In my view, this makes LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK accessible to those of us who resonate with Palmer’s journey but could never write so elegantly of our own.Chapter III is titled ‘When Way Closes’. The missing article is not a typo, but rather a nod to the Quaker sense of ‘Way’. In the discourse of the Friends, we learn, ‘way opens’ and ‘way closes’. Palmer traces a givenness to vocation, a created anchoring in our persons that does not make all things possible. Instead, the way each of us is both opens doors and closes doors. Sometimes the closing brings embarrassment and shame.‘It would be nice if our limits did not reveal themselves in such embarrassing ways as getting fired from a job. But if you are like me and don’t readily admit your limits, embarrassment may be the only way to get your attention. I go on full alert only when I am blocked or get derailed or flat-out fail. Then, finally, I may be forced to face my nature and find out whether I can make something of both my gifts and my limitations.’Palmer develops the role played by our limitations by counterposing the ‘oughts’ that we often heed in our vocational adventure to the ‘ecology of life’ in which we find a proper place to stand and to be. In this third chapter, this Christian reader finds the theological undergirding to Palmer’s prose that the author often touches upon only lightly. It is, for Palmer, the ‘God of reality’ who ‘dwells quietly in the root system of the very nature of things’. He speaks easily of ‘one’s created nature’. When one finally comes to rest within this ecology burnout is not the inevitable outcome of passionate labor. Rather, ‘(w)hen the gift I give to the other is integral to my own nature, when it comes from a place of organic reality within me, it will renew itself—and me—even as I give it away.’‘All the Way Down’ (Chapter IV) suggests that an excruciating read lies just ahead and the title does not deceive, for in this fourth chapter Palmer sketches out for us his two debilitating experiences of depression. Neither reducing nor simplifying the causes of depression—in fact he calls the thing a ‘mystery’—Palmer managed in his own suffering to find his way to viewing depression as his friend. It took him all the way down to where it was safe to stand. Following upon his previous description of ‘the God of reality’, Parker borrows Tillich’s description of God as the ground of being: ’I had always imagined God to be in the same general direction was everything else I valued: up … I had to be forced underground before I could understand that the way to God is not up but down.’Thankfully, Palmer does not write prescriptively about the ways (plural) into depression nor the ways (again, note the plural) out. His own recovery remains something of a mystery, captured in the magnificent poem with which he graces the conclusion of Chapter IV. Yet for him, his submission to the vocational ‘oughts’ by which he permitted himself for years to be hounded prepared the way down in the darkness. There he found not only God, but himself as well.Chapter V (‘Leading from Within’) now turns outward to the damage and the health that a leader can bring to the wider community and, indeed, to the world. We project both shadows and light onto the world. ‘A good leader is intensely aware of the interplay of inner shadow and light, lest the act of leadership do more harm than good.’In this chapter, any hint that vocation is essentially a narcissistic pursuit evaporates. For Palmer, vocation begins within but eventually projects itself onto one’s world. He writes insightfully of the ways leaders fashion a community from misguided starting points and, happily, also via the freedom that comes from authentic vocation. Let me single out at some length a few of Parker’s words on fear as motivator:‘As one who is no stranger to fear, I have had to read those words with care so as not to twist them into a discouraging counsel of perfection. “Be not afraid” does not mean we cannot have fear. Everyone has fear, and people who embrace the call to leadership often find fear abounding. Instead, the words say we do not need to be the fear we have. We do not have to lead from a place of fear, thereby engendering a world in which fear is multiplied. We have places of fear inside of us, but we have other places as well—places with names like trust and hope and faith. We can choose to lead from one of those places, to stand on ground that is not riddled with the fault lines of fear, to move toward others from a place of promise instead of anxiety. As we stand in one of those places, fear may remain close at hand and our spirits may still tremble. But now we stand on ground that will support us, ground from which we may lead others towards a more trustworthy, more hopeful, more faithful way of being in the world.’This reviewer—like Palmer, no stranger to fear—thrills to such a sound and realistic assessment of the kind of ‘fearlessness’ that embraces reality and yet dares to lead, unparalyzed. In his concluding chapter (VI, ‘There is a Season’), Palmer departs from his now familiar approach to speak of how ‘the quest for selfhood and vocation’ follow the recurring patterns and rhythms of the four seasons. This chapter alone would justify keeping Let Your Life Speak within arm’s reach, to be read and re-read at the calendar’s and the seasons’ turnings. One can hardly read Palmer’s exceedingly transparent work on vocation and then write for others about it without a bit of transparency of his own. After twelve years of leadership in a relatively prominent position—at least for the proportions of this review’s little world—I recently hit the wall at the end of a particularly grueling vocational mile. This is not without its emotional violence, its sense of failure and disillusionment, its return to the root considerations of vocational identity, and its forceful requirement to look again and to look within for wisdom about next steps. For me, each page of Palmer’s LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK brought both balm and direction. Many brought exhilaration as well.I offer this review in hopes that Palmer will be a bit more widely read for those, like me, who find a wise mentor the doctor’s very order.

Where do you start with this book? It was one of the most fantastic reads for me. I picked this book up thinking I was going to have some guidance about what I’m supposed to be “doing” in my life. Instead, I got an awakening about exploring the beauties of life within myself and the world around me and beyond. This book touched my soul and opened my thought process up in ways I didn’t realize existed. This book is so profound that you won’t know what I’m talking about until you read it yourself. And it was so beautifully written. It’s a mere 109 pages but I found myself rereading much of it to really grasp and love the concepts.Though this book is Christian based, it’s very universal in its language and idea so anyone from any faith can pick this up and be blown away.

I had never before come across this author, but got the book when another writer quoted from it. I found it helpful, easy to read, and it had some seminal things to say about letting go of the external pressures to be and do things a certain way. Allowing oneself to be what we were born to be, irrespective of where we stand in the pecking order was very refreshing. The "you can be anything you want to be" message has limitations since there is only just so much room for prize-winning anythings, and a depressed economy makes getting to the top even more difficult, so a sense of failure is the inevitable outcome if that is the way we want to live our lives. Being exactly who you are and getting in touch with yourself at this deepest level leaves you with a certain amount of relief when he assures us that fulfilling our lives by allowing ourselves to be who we actually are leads to the greater sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. If I have any criticism of this book it would be that it was a little too self-absorbed, but then, I have to admit that he used his own experiences to help us with ours, and it was skilfully done. The religious references were restrained, so anyone of any faith or of no faith could relate to what he is trying to say. Bottom line - Parker J Palmer deserves his status as one of the better writers of this genre. I am not sorry I got this book.

This book contains some great advice ... even wisdom ... but I felt the author's writing style was a tad foggy.I teach a class on how to create your life's timeline. Some people call the timeline the DASH. The dash on your grave marker between your birth and death date. I recommend to my students to include the good, bad and ugly on the timeline to help your family and friends not only learn about you but also learn some valued life lessons. To emphasize the importance of including mistakes on your timeline, I plan to reference the author's statement: “Many young people today journey in the dark, as the young always have, and we elders do them a disservice when we withhold the shadowy parts of our lives. When I was young, there were very few elders willing to talk about the darkness; most of them pretended that success was all they had ever known. As the darkness began to descend on me in my early twenties, I thought I had developed a unique and terminal case of failure. I did not realize that I had merely embarked on a journey toward joining the human race.”

This is a fantastic book that helped me to make some important decisions regarding the direction of my career when I was at a crossroads in my life. The premise upon which this book is basically based on the old adage, "To Thy Own Self Be True," but this book goes very much beyond this - it actually unpacks this adage and applies it concretely to one's career choices and other things. It also seems to hold up a mirror to the things that we tell ourselves that prevent us from leading a more vocationally liberated life. Truly, I have been a world-weary reader of inspirational books, but this is one new read that I absolutely loved! Thank you Parker Palmer for writing this illuminating book!

Incredibly informative and easy to follow along. I started with several other "... for beginners" books and they were poorly edited, difficult to follow, and/or too short to give you any kind of competency with the OS.

Jason Cannon's book shows that, indeed, it is possible to have you create a book as good, and sometimes better, than those that have editors and publishers galore, for example Schott's "The Linux Command Line", and Blum's "Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting". While I recommend all three books if you need to be die-hard Linux wizard, what especially recommends Cannon's book is that he takes the time to explain what other books simply find too easy to explain (for example, umask and chmod). In addition, Cannon revels in pearls and shortcuts, and giving away his polished command line sequences that are both remarkably intuitive once you know them, and totally elusive until somebody tells you. In addition, Cannon takes the time to explain SSH and connecting --yes, perhaps a bit too dense if starting to learn Unix, and a bit unnecessary for the expert, but still certainly very, very practical. It is not uncommon to find the Linux newbie ready to go, with basic commands under his belt learned and memorized, just to be stumped at time of logging. Cannon's SSH initial chapters are a fresh blast of air, and gives folks confidence with Linux, as opposed to becoming totally stumped at first. That is, of course, not to say that at times the book feels slightly rushed. Command Line Kung Fu, for example, worth the price on its own, would be made into a serious reference with an expansion on other frequent command options, and examples. Overall, this book offers the newbie something rarely offered: the ability to learn Linux, and begin using pearls and exotic but useful command sequences that are usually reserved for those 'in the know' with many years of experience. Get a few of these command sequences under your belt, and you will impress even the most die-hard Linux guru.

The reason I like this book is because of the way it presents the information. It's direct and to the point. It provides the commands, how they are used, and it gives examples of the results of each command. At the end of each chapter are links to additional resources for each section for further learning. Can be used as a reference as well as an intro to controlling the Linux OS. Good read, no fluff.

Really nice introduction to Linux together with how to access a Linux system for practise purposes by means of virtual machines, connecting to another Linux PC from Mac/Windows/Linux etc. The topics are clearly illustrated with screen shots and there is also a dedicated website for the book. If you are interested in Linux this is a good place to start and there are references at the end of chapters. Furthermore, the topics included apply to all Linux flavors such as Ubuntu, Debian, OpenSUSE, Red Hat Linux and so on.

Jason is the man for Linux information. I have his books and have taken his video courses. Well worth the money.

I've used this book to refresh my knowledge in Linux and it really served me well. The Kung Fu thing on this book is real!

It was a book and it was in good condition when I got it.

Great book if your learning Linux, started learning Ubuntu server and I had no issues. Use a VM with this book.

Review

Bravo to Sandra Adell for having the courage to put a human face on the gambling industry's best customer the slot machine addict. From a safe distance, we watch as Adell falls prey to the deceptive and covert technology purposely engineered into modern-day slot machines. Sandra Adell is as unlikely a slot machine addict as anyone might imagine smart, sophisticated and accomplished. Yet her experience mirrors that of so many hundreds of thousands who continue to find their lives inexplicably spiraling out of control at the hands of a product marketed as entertainment, and often promoted by State governments as a revenue generator though her descriptions of her beloved Detroit would seem to refute the industry's promise as an effective economic engine. --Mary Tufts, Director, United to Stop Slots in MassachusettsConfessions of a Slot Machine Queen is a moving exploration of how a highly educated, Black woman descended into the depths of an addiction to slot machines and then climbed back out. With courage and clarity, Adell probes the connections between her difficult youth, her inspiring climb out of the Detroit ghetto of the 1960s to a tenured professorship and an acting career in mid-life, and then, following a deeply personal loss, her descent into gambling addiction. Adell s personal narrative makes the costs of the expansion of casino gambling in America real in ways that academic studies cannot often achieve. --Rachel Volberg, President, Gemini Research, Ltd.The perennial human dream of beating the odds, of outfoxing chance and Lady Fortune, has routinely stirred excitement and sometimes raw passion but much less often has it garnered close meditation and measured introspection. . . . Sandra Adell s memoir, Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen, supplies a new and welcome twist on the time-worn cliches of gambling confessionals, first because her double identity as African American and woman destabilize our conventional starting assumptions about such narratives, and second because the insights drawn from her professional vocation scholar and critic create loops of investigative and psychological introspection otherwise unexpected. . . . Significant portions of Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen confront a backdrop of urban decline and the ongoing destruction of her native black Detroit . . . where she sees the central corridor of the city s institutional life gradually engulfed by riots and blight and casino glare. --John S. Wright, Morse-Amoco Distinguished Teaching Professor of African American & African Studies and English, University of Minnesota

From the Inside Flap

The global economic crisis deepens by the day, yet the gambling industry continues to rake in enormous profits as people everywhere pump billions of dollars into slot machines in the hope of winning the ever elusive jackpot. Sandra AdellÂ’s CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN: A MEMOIR offers an intimate look into problem and compulsive casino gambling and the impact the casino industry is having on vulnerable communities, especially poor and working class people, the disabled, communities of color, and women?the fastest growing population of problem gamblers in the United States. AdellÂ’s narrative of gambling and loss unfolds against her history as an unwed and uneducated teen mother from Detroit who beat the odds stacked against her and went on to earn a Ph.D. and a coveted position as a literature professor in a major Midwestern university. In a clear and unaffected prose style, Adell describes how she went from having no interest in gambling to risking everything she had worked for after playing the slots and winning a small jackpot. We watch as she struggles against the lure of the slots only to get seduced time and again until she finally spirals out of control and is forced to confront the demons that lay beneath the surface of her professional persona. Confessions of a Slot Machine Queen is as much a story of redemption as it is a critical examination of the casino gambling industry and the potential dangers of this new and high-tech form of entertainment.

One of the very rare true story books about female gamblers out there. I’m researching the connection between gambling addiction and narcissism. This memoir gambling book allowed me to look for clues of things that hint of narcissism or symptoms of narcissism such as an addictive personality. Maybe because the author has more to lose in her professional career this book seemed conservative with information compared to another female gambler book I’ve read called A place where weeds and roses grow by Joan Spencer. In one of my amazon book review of a Gam Anon book called Living with a compulsive gambler I go into more details about this theory narcissism and gambling and the solution.Pros of the bookCan be purchased at a low used price. I run across a lot of pricey true gambling addiction books so it's nice to see low used prices. One of those rare female gambling memoir books.Cons of bookSeemed resistant to spill all the beans but there are a few highlights I've made throughout the book to things stated by the author that hints of narcissism. So this is yet another book written by a gambler with statements that support my theory. The highlights…….wines I love to drink. Pg 3 I’ve struggled with alcohol addiction for most of my life. I also once was a heavy smoker. I started smoking at age fourteen and for the next twenty years or so I smoked at least a pack of unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes a day. Pg 22,23 A Lot of narcissist have or had alcohol and smoking addictions. A lot women deal with the alcohol dependency by playing the flirt game clubs and bars for drinks. Male alcoholics drink cheap beer and then solicit for money on the street.……..my second stream of income from acting and commercial print modeling jobs. pg 2...I fell in love with acting, I’ve immersed myself in that world. pg 8 Hollywood and theatre are attractive fields for narcissism because it feeds their need for attention without having relationships, Plus the money potential to make millions of dollars is attractive as well. Hence why you see so many narcissistic hollywood actors and actresses with addictions and gambling vices.….Not to mention that I’m une femme d une certaine age, that is middle aged and a black woman…..After more than twenty years at the University of Wisconsin Madison first as a graduate student in the Department of Comparative Literature and then as a professor in Afro American Studies I was tired of trying to live up to other peoples images of a black woman in academe. Pgs 2,3….Narcissist are master manipulators and like to use bad experiences or matrix misinformation to justify future wrong actions or seek sympathy. Example...Popular matrix myth is that It’s a man’s world. Yet a woman knows that if she is half decent looking she can be homeless and have many government programs help her until she finds a descent Joe Boring dependable man to support her until she gets greedy and divorces him for a flashy man with money and a addictive personality...aka a male narcissist. On the other hand a young male has far fewer if any government programs to support him and even fewer women who would support a down and out male till he gets on his feet. But men make more money is another myth. A woman may or may not make less money than a man but what is certain is that every man I know spends a considerable amount of his income on buying a woman fancy things that she wants so in essence a woman has control over her own money and a good portion of a mans or mens money too. Whenever I think of history, I think of building 7 that took place on nine eleven. That was something that has happened in our lifetimes but yet building 7 is missing from nine eleven history books. Another interesting thing I found listed in Webster 1828 dictionary which is 30 yrs before the civil war. Slave-trade definition... the barbarous and wicked business of purchasing men and women transporting them to a distant country and selling them for slaves. Niggard definition... A miser; a person meanly close and covetous. A sordid wretch who saves every cent or spends grudgingly. No mention about skin color as misinformed by hollywood propaganda machine.I was liberating myself intellectually, artistically, and spiritually, not from the poet but from the weight I had borne for many years as a black woman professor at a predominantly white university...I had earned a PH.D, received tenure, published books and articles on African American literature.pgs 8,9….I get a sense of a lot of pride. Narcissist have a lot of pride, to admit wrong, ask for help or apologize to others tend to hurt narcissist ego. Bible says pride comes before the fall. Proverbs 16:18 Then there is that myth of struggling in a mans world as a woman. I don’t think any woman can say she never got help from a man in some way or another. Sure she may have been doing a natural thing such as having sex with a man but still a man helped her to achieve whatever goal she wanted at the time. Then to bring up skin color as a disadvantage when becoming successful in a predominantly white university gives no credit at all the white people who helped her at the university. Skin color wasn't a problem back in the bible days because people were judged by their mentality and attitude. Moses was married to a ethiopian woman. Num 12:1 God sees a man's heart and not his appearance. 1 Sam 16:7 Romans 2:11After watching several people sit at the slot machine to my right, spin a few times and then leave I decided to give it a try.pg 11 Some slot players like to vulture and watch people lose a lot of money playing and then expecting the machine to soon hit go play the machine as soon as they leave their seat to leave or go to the restroom. The man next to me complained that he had lost 1800 dollars on the ten times pay machines . He was angry; I was disgusted with him and me. I felt like yelling at him, Will you shut the f up.pg 20. Narcissist only see and think of themselves so they view everyone else as competition or obstacles to their goals or people to manipulate for their agenda. Gamblers to see and treat other gamblers as competition. There are alot more book highlights that I made but the review is getting long so I will stop but If you would like more info on narcissism and the gambling connection then please look for my amazon Gam Anon book review of Living with a compulsive gambler.

This is an amazing story. A must read.

Great Book thank you

I got this for my mother and she LOVED it.

Not a whole lot here that deals with gambling addiction. This book is more a biography of this woman. Not a bad read but also not what I was looking for.

Shows how educated, smart and successful people can succumb to this addiction, the insanity, this irrational urge. She didn't have to lose it all to know her time was up. It's about having the right attitude when your solution doesn't quite come at you the way you expected.

I read this book in two days; I could not put it down. I know Professor Adell personally, and she carries herself in such a poised, demure manner that I never would have imagined her background was so tumultuous. I would definitely recommend this book for any person struggling through a gambling addiction, and this book should be first on the list for any single parent contemplating returning to school.

I agree that the writing in this book is very good, just really fine expository writing and in any case the reader feels privileged to see her personal, professional, and family life. Nonetheless, I think it fails in that it just never quite helps readers understand why problem gamblers gamble. It's quite clear from the text that the author understands the math of repetitive gambling (and therefore knows that unless you stop the house odds will surely grind you down) and has no magical illusions about the power of mind over slot machine. Further, she strongly dislikes the casino environment and does not seem to enjoy gambling. Yet, she can't seem to stop, despite a growing awareness, even horror, at what it is costing her in money and personal respect.Casino gambling is hugely popular, yet I've never had a clue as to what makes it attractive. Mostly those doing it don't appear to be having fun and, even without problem gambling, it's still a costly activity. So, I read this book primarily because I wanted some understand of why people do this, despite its high cost and, for some, significant risks. In the end I was disappointed with this book because it just didn't help me understand. I do realize that some people engage in a variety of compulsive behaviors, and often they're unable to explain why it so hard to stop them. So, perhaps this is beyond explanation, just something no one who hasn't experienced it can understand. But if so, books about it will be of limited interest. In any case, the reader can't help but walk away without the realization, "This could happen to anyone (but it's more likely to happen if there's a casino nearby)" and, "The downside of 'just trying it' may be far larger than you think."

I bought this book many years ago when Dr. Crook wrote the first edition around 1986. At that time many of the prescriptions for Candida Yeast infections were not available in the US or not invented yet. I recall doing well based on the advice of the book then, but the diet was very difficult to follow. The latest version with updated revisions, includes meal menu items, foods you must avoid at all costs, and ways to test for food allergies that work. I've followed the diet for 8 days thus far and have not only lost 10 lbs, but feel better overall. I haven't obtained a prescription yet from my doctor to kill the yeast, but just the diet alone is helping. I'm sleeping better, up less often during the night, no more itching issues in those places us men aren't supposed to scratch in public. I've learned foods, fruits, and condiments I thought were healthy and good for us, are a major cause aggravating Yeast infection issues. Mine started again along with massive weight gain while starving myself, after a long stay in the VA Hospital and pumped with strong antibiotics via IV's and pills. I lost 67 lbs while sick and started feeling better, but put on 80 lbs in 12 months time due to the yeast issues caused by the antibiotics. No amount of dieting with fresh vegetables, yogurts, fresh fruits, 2% milk even, stopped the weight gain. Literally starving myself still caused weight gains. The book reminded me of the mold and sugars in foods that are okay for people without the yeast problems, can eat without worry. I knew from past experience this diet works, and for me I hope it allows me to avoid Bypass surgery as my last resort option (especially with VA doctors that aren't as professional as private doctors). I highly recommend this book, even if you don't think you have a Yeast infection problem There are simple tests and questions inside designed to help you determine if Yeast is causing your problems in health and/or weight. I am now ordering his Yeast Connection Cookbook. This should be a good companion book if you are considering this one. That (meals I could make) in the past was the difficult part, learning what I could actually have to eat or drink. By the way, I am eating until full, only some cravings that I can now better control, and best of all.....finally losing weight. This will teach you many things about the foods we love that are literally killing us. It is worth the effort and will be not only a life time and lifestyle change, but will make you feel 100% for the first time in years. I've learned to like foods I never would have tried before in my life, even my old cat is healthier and wants the asparagus spears and broccoli I cook in my own herbs grown on the patio.****Update****I started this Yeast Connection Diet on 9/5/2013 and as of 11/1/2013, I have lost 32 lbs so far. This is without any added medications. Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, and Prostate issues have all improved. Overall health and energy level is dramatically improved, plus I have discovered food allergies I never knew about. Most of the recipes are good, some need improvement. The key is, avoid ALL processed foods, including sauces like A1, Mustard, Mayonnaise, etc. You can make your own from scratch knowing exactly what goes into it. As all diets, doing without sugar, salt, etc. is more expensive (my food bill doubled), but this one is well worth it for the benefits for me thus far. As much as I once loved Coca Cola, Domino's Pizza's, fried anything, sweets, etc. Nearly all the foods with sugar or salt added, I can't stand the taste of anymore. Even Kraft American Cheese slices I loved once, are too salty for me now. It is a very time consuming and strict diet, but being retired I have more time for the shopping and preparation now. If you have a busy life, make up your meals and ingredients for a week or so in advance. Make sure to refrigerate or freeze them since they will not have any preservatives (unless you like green or black mold). As you get practice with making condiments and meal items, it gets easier and faster with practice. For those of you struggling with Yo-Yo diets, or like me, put on weight while counting calories living on 700 per day, weighting portions, counting carbs, etc. that didn't work, and worse, put on the weight anyway. I haven't counted a single calorie or weighed portions since starting this diet. For me it was a waste of time and just didn't work. Things I thought were healthy, were compounding the problem and adding on the weight. This is a lifestyle change, to the point of becoming religious in the proper foods, preparation, and changes you must be committed to. For me seeing positive results and averaging 2 lbs per day lost is what keeps me focused. Yes, I have cheated, then find out one meal of the wrong foods not only causing immediate health issues to return, but sometimes as much as 10 lbs gained overnight after taking two weeks to lose the same amount. As you get more used to eating properly, as I said above, the bad foods will not longer taste as good, or your body will let you know real quick not to eat certain foods you gave up.I have been consulting with my doctor, and by giving up dairy products, I take vitamin D, Calcium, and other supplements since blood and urine tests showed they dropped. I could literally drink a gallon of milk per day, but found out even 2% milk is loaded with sugar and salt. So thinking fat free milk and the creamer in my coffee was okay, proved to be wrong for me. Any hidden sugars will restrict the weight loss, salt can boost blood pressure. So I can't stress how important reading labels on every food item you buy is very important.

If you want to understand what a yeast/fungal/Candida infection is, then this is the definitive book on it. It includes the diet you need to be on to get rid of it, and tons of relevant information. Everyone should read this book so you can identify it in others. Pretty much, 90% of the population has Candida, and it causes a host of our diseases, but doctors never talk about it or admit that this condition is so debilitating or pervasive. Must be denial on purpose. Please read this. I wish I had found it years before I did.

This is my second copy. Loved this book when I read it many years ago. I had loaned it to someone and didn't get it back, so bought myself another copy. Good book! The first time I had read it, a coworker passed her copy around the office. There must have been at least 4 or 5 of us that read it and each bought our own copy after reading hers.

This is a fantastic book, extremely informative. If you even think you may have a yeast problem, you've got to read this book. I learned a lot, will be referring to it often.

This book was amazing. It offered a possibility as to what was causing my husband's Meniere's. He was preparing to have surgery to control the symptoms and then we read the book. It has only been a couple of months since he has been treated and it has changed our lives I'm not saying it will work with everyone but if you or someone you love is experiencing these type of issues it is worth a read.

Confirms all of my deepest suspicions of yeast and its effect on the human body.

All the information in here is from 1986 or before except I did notice one from I think 1992. It appears the authors 1st edition is first in the book and rather than revise and update the information the author just added the same information a second time. So as you read the book you get the same information 6+ times. This should be basic knowledge now with more advanced testing and treatments. If your medical doctor doesn't know it look for a Naturopathic Doctor as they will know all about this and have dozens of dietary, homeopathic, and botanical treatments. I like the topic and think that it was likely an excellent book in the mid 80's. I hope they reorganize the book to eliminate reputation and update the information.I would recommend getting the The Candida Cure: Yeast, Fungus & Your Health - The 90-Day Program to Beat Candida & Restore Vibrant Health but I would caution that it appears she receives money from the company and supplements she recommends. You can also find the same details and protocols from the top couple search results "Candida diet protocol" in Google.

This book goes above and beyond what one needs to know to treat candida. It has a checklist of symptoms that gives the reader validation to what they are experiencing as one who has systemic yeast infection. The book addresses diet and lifestyle changes that are necessary to heal the body of the overgrowth of bad bacteria. It suggest test one can ask for at doctor visits that could possibly indicate a systemic condition with yeast. I recommend this book, it has already proven to be a life saver; I feel better already.
