Review

(From the Introduction) One thing we did prove conclusively: there is a Canadian cuisine, and it is unique in all the world. To find out, we had our representatives scouring every province to find recipes distinctive to different regions. The story that goes with each recipe tells, in essence, the history of the region from which it comes. (The recipe introduction to Kitchener Kartoffel Kloesse) The German settlers brought to Canada their potato dumplings, and the Acadians from the Moncton, New Brunswick, region adopted the recipe as their own. Called poutine râpée, this dish is traditionally served with sugar and molasses during the New Year's festivities; in the Acadian version, the potato mixture is wrapped around diced salt pork.

I got this to replace an earlier Red Roses cookbook that is falling apart after 40 years of use. I don't remember now if this is an actual Red Roses cookbook or a cookbook that I followed my nose to by reading the comments, but it's an excellent cookbook. The old ones are the best, the ones that call for a teaspoon of salt regardless of what the recipe is. Newfangled recipes with their measly quarter-teaspoons of salt just make my eyeballs roll.

This book was recommended by a family member and didn't let me down. Love the recipes.

Love this cookbook. Lots of recipes that remind me of growing up in the Maritimes. Cannot wait to try out more recipes.

A classic! Fabulous book, not only for the recipes.

A favorite cookbook from my youth. It's so nice to have another copy.

A favorite / favourite

Tourtierres that made me gain fifteen pounds, French Onion Soup au Gratin that warmed my soul on cold winter nights, Wild Rice and Mushroom Casserole, and Quiche Lorraine (my very first quiche recipe – I was in love!). All this with little bits of Canadian history mixed in.

I purchased this cookbook about 25 years ago. This book showed me how to make the perfect apple pie using brown sugar. It showed me how to make wonderful popovers and lemon bread which my family loves. My daughters use my well-worn edition for stuffing and sauce recipes. If you only have one cookbook, this should be the one!!!

If you ever visit tidepools, you've probably had the experience of wondering what the heck you were looking at. Although there are some decent tidepool ID cards that will help you, the problem is just knowing names isn't always that helpful. Like, okay, it's a "Tunicate" -- but what the heck is that? Fylling's book does a great job of giving the casual tidepooler a deeper (pun intended) look at the life you find. And it's delivered in a fun casual manner with gorgeous illustrations. It's improved my family's experience of tidepools -- and has been a great gift for friends who I thought might want to know a little more about the ocean environment!

This book is excellent! The illustrations and descriptions are clear and easy to use for identification. We took it to the coast for a big family vacation at the tide-pools in Oregon. All 12 cousins loved this book! We even had strangers stoping us to compare their findings with the images in our book.I wish it was waterproof... We’ll probably buy a new copy for the next vacation.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with well-written descriptions of major tidepool inhabitants. Easy to read and filled with fascinating facts - like the sea squirts that literally re-organize their innards as they mature; the dog whelks that are quite efficient predators; the inter-relationships of the different creatures and plants. The enthusiasm of the author for the tidepools shows up so clearly in each crisp, elegant, delicately colored drawing and the engaging, often humorous text. The book has a nice heft for a slim volume (excellent paper quality), and the font and formatting strike a balance between historical and contemporary. It could be tucked into a pocket or backpack quite well. I plan to get several copies to give to friends who enjoy tidepools or have kids who would love to be introduced to the incredible world of marine life.

I really like this book, but the dealer was misleading as to it's condition and thus the price is doesn't match the quality.

This is the most interesting book on tide pooling I've read so far. If you have any interest in ocean critters read this book.

Love this book, descriptions and all.

It is both interesting and well illustrated

Cute pocket guide book for the local tide pools (we live in Santa Barbara). I love the drawings, just a little disappointed that not all the local life could be found in the book.

Taking Back Philosophy: A Multicultural Manifesto, by Bryan W. Van Norden

Review

A powerful call for a global approach to philosophy, demonstrating in practice what it would mean to bring philosophical ideas from different traditions together to rethink the field of philosophy and to rethink the world around us. A wonderful, highly important, and tremendously exciting work. (Michael Puett, author of The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life)Taking Back Philosophy is a high-spirited, passionate, over-the-top and ultimately entirely persuasive argument for the inclusion of Chinese thought in the teaching of philosophy in American and European universities. In so doing, it also presents a brilliant case for the importance of philosophy in the moral and political lives of all of us, not just philosophers or academics let alone academic philosophers. It persuades both through polemical and often hilarious attacks on narrow-minded European philosophers and even more narrow-minded American academics and through positive examples of ways in which texts from different traditions can illuminate one another. It will make some people hopping mad and convert many others to the worthy cause of multiculturalism. (Wendy Doniger, author of The Ring of Truth, and Other Myths of Sex and Jewelry)Bryan Van Norden's Taking Back Philosophy is a take-no-prisoners attack on normal philosophy, the kind that sees itself as a series of footnotes to Plato. Jay Garfield’s polemical foreword provides compelling evidence that philosophy in the Anglophone world is structurally racist. Van Norden’s text provides a crystal-clear argument for philosophy in a new and inclusive key. If philosophy is concerned with the contours of truth, goodness, and beauty, it will need to open itself to the deep and long-lived philosophical traditions of China, India, Africa, and the Americas. A discipline-changing manifesto! (Owen Flanagan, author of The Geography of Morals: Varieties of Moral Possibility)Taking Back Philosophy throws down the gauntlet to the way philosophy has traditionally been taught―and in most places continues to be taught―by the Western philosophical establishment. The book is a must-read for anyone who teaches philosophy or who thinks that there is no philosophy outside the traditions originating in Ancient Greece. (Graham Priest, author of One: Being an Investigation Into the Unity of Reality and of Its Parts, Including the Singular Object Which Is Nothingness)Van Norden challenges philosophers in ways they have never been challenged before while also making the most compelling case I have ever seen for the value of a philosophical education and its very practical benefits for societies that care about promoting civil discourse. He writes engagingly about what philosophy is and what it should be, moving seamlessly between the voices of Chinese, Indian, and Western philosophers, presidential candidates, and Supreme Court justices and offering colorful examples from film, literature, and everyday life. It is at once a stinging indictment of the exclusion of diverse perspectives from the discipline of philosophy and a ringing endorsement of the value of studying philosophy. (Erin M. Cline, author of Families of Virtue: Confucian and Western Views on Childhood Development)A delightful book that takes a global perspective, challenging narrowness in the current philosophic, political, and cultural scene. (Stephen H. Phillips, author of Yoga, Karma, and Rebirth: A Brief History and Philosophy)A vigorous, clear, and convincing book suitable for any reader who cares about philosophy, the liberal arts, or the relevance of diverse cultures to basic questions about how we ought to live. (Aaron Stalnaker, coauthor of Religious Ethics in a Time of Globalism: Shaping a Third Wave of Comparative Analysis)An important book. Philosophers working within and outside departments of philosophy should read and reflect thoughtfully on its arguments. (Reading Religion)This is a wonderfully lucid, purposefully polemical tract calling for non-Western philosophies to be introduced into University curricula. (New York Review of Books)A spirited defense of philosophy as a dialogue that should include multiple perspectives and traditions. (Choice)

I imagined I would just start this book last night, but instead I was compelled to finished it in one sitting. Van Norden’s Taking Back Philosophy: A Cultural Manifesto argues in a convincing, sharp, and yet charitable tone, that teaching philosophy non multi-culturally is disadvantageous to us all and even downright non philosophical.Van Norden urges us to return to the way of Socrates and Confucius. The way of approaching others and the world in wonder. The way of learning by discussing with diverse others how best we can all live well. The way that we only know is being done well when some start to worry if we might be 'corrupting the youth.'Unlike Van Norden, many people who write about philosophy offer a murky, abstract, or no definition of philosophy. Or worse yet, they quip that what philosophy is is a philosophical question. Or even more ridiculously, that philosophy is something only Greeks and those influenced by them could do, because the word ‘philosophy’ comes from Greek.Van Norden will have none of this chicanery. He doesn't mince words. He doesn't evade us in an inky cloud. He respects us too much. To his credit, Van Norden gives us a clear definition of what he thinks philosophy is that we can openly agree or disagree with:“Philosophy is dialogue about problems that we agree are important, but don’t agree about the method for solving, where ‘importance’ ultimately gets it sense from the question of the way one should live.”This is why philosophy should be studied multiculturally. Not because of what one critic of Van Norden called the 'ooshy gooshy need to pretend every culture is equally advanced.’ But, because philosophy can only be of best use to us when it offers differing voices with different assumptions from different traditions. Because then, and only then, will it be allowed for the greatest amount of people with differing assumption to disagree, talk with, and learn from each other about how to solve problems, especially the most important one of all, which is what it means to live a good life.Van Norden argues that philosophy dies when we create walls around our own traditions to protect them from other traditions. For we all have assumptions that blind us, and what the study of multicultural philosophy does is to make our assumptions more obvious by showing that other people and cultures do not share them. In a very real sense, all the assumptions we make come from some philosopher or another, whether or not we know this. We are therefore already already doing philosophy whether or not we realize it, or even do philosophy well.As Van Norden memorably put in in an enjoyable rant of his:“Do you think that the purpose of life is to make the most of your intelligence and contribute to your community? You’re an Aristotelian. Do you think there is no purpose to life except for the one each of us chooses for herself? You’re an existentialist. Do you think that morality has to be explained psychologically, by our emotions and other motivations? You’re a Humean. Do you think that what is right is to do whatever produced the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people? You’re a utilitarian. Do you think that there are some actions that are intrinsically wrong and must never be done, even if they would result in desirable consequences? You’re a Kantian. Do you think that government is designed to protect our inalienable rights to life, liberty and property? You’re a Lockean. Do you think that government must protect our freedoms, but wealth inequality is justifiable only insofar as it benefits those most in need? You’re a Rawlsian. Do you think that much of religious belief can be justified by philosophy? Please say hello to my friend Thomas Aquinas. Do you think we can legitimately have religious belief even though most it must be accepted on faith? Go hang out with my buddies Pascal and Kierkegaard. Do you believe that religion is superstition that has had a largely negative influence on the world? Read Bertrand Russell or J.L. Mackie. Or do you dismiss philosophy as nothing but rationalizations for the will to power or structure of domination? Enjoy Nietzsche, Marx, Freud, and Foucault. (Oops! They’re philosophers too!) The question is not whether philosophy is important you. It already is. The only question is whether you choose to become self-aware and critically reflective about the philosophical beliefs you hold.”We do philosophy better when we know what our influences and assumptions are. We do it even better when we are able to (as Van Norden himself does) make our our assumptions respectfully clear to others. We simply blind ourselves to different and perhaps better questions and answers about how we might live well when we ignore or disparage philosophy. This is why Van Norden repeats again and again that the study of philosophy is not incompatible with living well, whether that means something practical, spiritual, or financial for you. Even if you are a scientist who ignorantly despises philosophy as impractical, such as Neil Degrasse Tyson or Stephen Hawking, you need philosophy just as much of the rest of us, because as Einstein himself argued:“So many people today -and even professional scientists- seem to me like somebody who has seen thousands of trees but has never seen a forest. A knowledge of the historic and philosophical background gives that kind of independence from prejudices of his generation from which most scientists are suffering. This independence created by philosophical insight is -in my opinion- the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a seeker after the truth.”Or take the words of Schrodinger who (like Einstein also) won a Nobel Prize in physics:“The scientific picture of the real word around me is deficient. It gives a lot of factual information, puts all our experience in a magnificently consistent order, but is ghastly silent about all and sundry that is really near to our heart, that really matters to us. It cannot tell us a word about red and blue, bitter and sweet, physical pain and physical delight; it knows nothing of beautiful and ugly, good or bad, God and eternity. Science sometimes pretends to answer questions in these domains, but the answers are very often so silly that we are not inclined to take them seriously.”Philosophy helps us do everything better when we do it right, and the only reliable way to do it wrong is to exclude learning from others because we assume we are correct, especially if it’s just because they look or sound different. In other words, the only way to always do bad philosophy is when we ignorantly argue against the multicultural learning and teaching of ‘others’ philosophies. If we aren't worried about corrupting the youth, and inspiring them with questionable ideas about what it means to live well, we aren't doing philosophy right.Van Norden's writing is, as a rule, crisp and precise. His manifesto works as a fine introduction to Chinese philosophy and the study of philosophy more generally. I recommend Van Norden's manifesto to anyone who has ever been interested in studying ‘Non Western philosophy’ and does not know where to begin or feels worried about being disparaged for doing so. Van Norden will equip you with all the arguments you need to make rigid and reactionary defenders of any 'traditional' canon look like the silly pedants they are. Van Norden might even make you laugh too, and what more can you want out of a work on philosophy trying to help you live better?

An important contribution to the debate about whether philosophy is just a Greek-Roman-Europe-American thing. Jay Garfield does the forward. This was an important simulation to my own thinking about philosophy. I think philosophy has lost it way. We need to take back philosophy.

Great intro for non academic of philosophy. Ethics, morality, how to approach becoming a self examiner are all parts here. In a wide world multiculturalism is lost if we is

Great book and a very important read for those with cosmopolitan leanings. It definitely made me rethink about how to shape a syllabus.

Great book. Open page 1, start reading. It's a fascinating ride.

This work is a no holds barred, gauntlet throwing indictment of the exclusion of the philosophy of China, India, Africa, and the Americas in the canon of current academia. Dr. Van Norden speaks directly to the reader in a clear, unimpeded prose that is easily absorbed and understood. How arrogant we are in our Anglocentric world to ignore discplines that predate our learning by hundreds of years. I myself was asked to write a book on colonial America, which rapidly turned into Genealogical Encyclopedia of the Colonial Americas, allowing me to include events happening in South America, almost a century before the establishment of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia.Van Norden demonstrates this multicultural vision. He also has a keen grasp of the practical role of philosophy in society, to quote, "What way should one live? Bernard Williams referred to this as the 'Socrates' question,' and identified it as central to ethical philosophy. I would expand upon this and say that it is the ultimate motivating question behind philosophy in every tradition."I would describe this book as a journey, tying together dialogues that may have been lost or discarded, and weaving them back together into one beautiful patchwork of thought.

Very good at contextualizing academic philosophy’s obsession with “the west” and relates philosophy to this same thought region’s political epoch just as well. I would have liked to dive deeper into how philosophy was/is practiced beyond the west rather than just hear about a few thinkers, so that we could better understand both similar and different world views and engage them for a better world.

I've been learning from Van Norden's work on Chinese philosophy for some time. I'm a fan of his and grateful for his work. I also teach non-Western philosophy and am sympathetic to his cause (understatement), and agree with much of his case. He effectively argues that the exclusion of non-Western philosophy from the canon is a completely contingent accident of history, stemming from ethnocentricm and racism in figures like Kant, and perpetuated by sloth, inertia, and more subtle forms of bias today. I only wish it wasn't written in such a politicized tone. Some of my biggest supporters in my department are non-progressive philosophers who are practically uniformly sneered at by Van Norden. It's unfortunate because it's almost like the book is written for people who largely agree with him and think like him. I do understand that VN is writing from a place of justifiable frustration after many years of struggle. It's too bad that like so many people, he often asserts subtle (or not so subtle) political shibboleths of group loyalty when it doesn't help and only excludes people that may have actually been sympathetic to his project. As Mozi stresses, such partiality prevents us coming together for a unified cause.

My wife and I read The Year 1,000 by this (British I think) author, and loved it, so we looked for more of his works. Lacey writes with a straightforward, clear and entertaining style. This is a right-down-the-middle history of Saudi Arabia, with great details about the rise of Sunni jihad terrorism, Wahhabism, Al Qaeda and Bin Laden. It explores the struggle between Islamic fundamentalists and modernists in Saudi Arabia. This is neither a conservative nor a liberal book; Lacey says both positive and negative things about George Bush when he feels it is called for. He has lived in the Kingdom for many years, and obviously has an affection for the Saudis--but not all of them, and his views are not blinded by that. This is an essential book for understanding both the Middle East and the terrorist threat we are dealing with. I highly recommend it. Inshallah you will read it.Robert A. HallAuthor: "The Coming Collapse of the American Republic."

Lacey has produced a very interesting history of Saudi Arabia (and by extend the House of Saud) from circa 1979 to 2009. He has managed to balance a chronological history of events in those tumultuous 30 years whilst also exploring themes such as the appeasement of religious in the wake of the 1979 storming of the Grand Mosque, modernisation, interaction with the West and the status of the minority Shia community.Whilst Lacey has included some small amount of social commentary, ie a brief discussion of same sex lesbian relationships, rape, the social repression of Saudi society the book is very much in the Great Man school of history so dont buy this book if your looking for a man on the street view of Saudi society. Otherwise it is excellent.I dont know if Lacey will live long enough to produce a trilogy but it is also worth mentioning that this book will be interesting to pick up in 20 years to see if some of the factors Lacey identifies have come to fruition. For example he talks about King Abdullah taking a strategic decision to seek other allies to the United States in 2004 in the wake of the invasion of Iraq. It will be interesting to see how this develops over the decades ahead and how prescient Lacey has been on this score and others.

I have been living in Saudi Arabia for a year now and I purchased this book to try and gain a better understanding of the people and the country. Unfortunately, most of the books on offer are written by expats and thus you will not get a balanced perspective of this exceptionally enigmatic country. Saying that though, Robert Lacey, has researched this subject very well and was granted privileged access to a number of subjects. He has put together a fantastic personal insight. I believe that the book is banned out here. Speak to any of the expats though and they will tell you that this is the definitive work on the country. I recommend this to any person travelling out to KSA, be it for business or to relocate. Just bear in mind that the locals will have a very different view surrounding many of the issues raised by Lacey.

Sprawling, conflicted and utterly fascinating. Like the mysterious country it aims to comprehend. As someone who has spent some time in the Kingdom, I can say that the book deals very carefully, fairly and skillfully with the many complex forces at work in Saudi. It is a sober but hopeful vision of a country that has so much to offer the world...if only it could get out of its own way.

This is a well written and thorough history of the Saudi kingdom and the royal family. The reader gets a full picture of Saudi domestic politics as well as the personalities of the various family members. This book enables the reader to understand why the Saudis act, react or refuse on an international level. The events of 9/11, the Gulf Wars, other Arab states, the Palestinians, and the Saudi relationship with the west, particularly America, are highlighted. King Abdullah is now 89 years old. It is worth reading this book knowing that Saudi Arabia will continue to be a powerful influence in that part of the world.

Like Robert Lacey's first book on Saudi Arabia, Inside the Kingdom is a masterpiece of style, substance, and critical reporting with cultural empathy. One of our best writers of living history.

This is a very well researched and written account of the major events that have taken place in the Kingdom over the past 30 years. The description of the ruling Al-Saud family is very good and the portraits of the individual members are, in my opinion, very acurate. The rise of Osama bin Laden is very well accurately portrayed and the author has been prolific in his sources, including personal interviews. As a resident of Saudi Arabia, many of the characters are well know to me and I have met a few of them - this, of course, does a lot to bring the book to life for me. Having said that, I would not hesitate in recommending this as an introduction and explanation to what is currently going on in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. The upheaval in Libya, Bahrain, Egypt etc becomes a lot clearer after reading books such as this.Thououghly recommended if you have any interest in the region.

This book takes on the mass of contradictions that are the Kingdom of Arabia, and the modern world of the Islam. The author has lived in the kingdom, and so writes from personal observation rather from abstract academic study. It is a real eye opener! Today, when the US news media shows us the world only as it has immediately and directly affected the US, this book provides the background for the 'why' and 'how' of this powerful and most influential of Muslem countries.

I am on my way to becoming Field Service Supervisor, and I am trying to study as much as possible out there. I found this short read the most relevant to my work (medical device) as the 42 points are very pertinent. Not every point applies to my scope of work, but the book does engage you to see how others approached issues and helps to rhetorically ask questions. The book can be easily read in one sitting or multiple sittings as there are 42+ 3-4 page chapters.

Pretty simple stuff, but really does a good job of putting it down in black and white what service companies need to be doing well.

I found it interesting that the authors of this book, Rosemary Coates and Jim Reily, did not know each other before writing this book. They spent two years interviewing executives from various companies and combined that information with their experience in global manufacturing and field service to create this material. There are many tips from executives in large companies like Cisco and General Electric that will help readers think bigger when it comes to field service. So many topics are covered in this book that it will make your head spin: procurement, mergers and acquisitions, counterfeit parts, maintenance contracts, trunk inventories, dealing with international staff and more. The information is broken down into bite sized chunks that are easy to digest. My favorite rule was #4 "Form Customer Advisory Boards to Build Loyalty". The time to get customer input is before a crisis happens. The authors recommend that you invite your top 20% of customers in terms of revenue and find out what they want and what they need. This ties in nicely with a later chapter that discusses customer surveys and feedback. If your company provides field service to customers then you absolutely must read this book and buy it in bulk for your employees. Smart readers will recognize that they can take the material in this book and create a training program for employees that will catapult their field service above and beyond their competitors.

I always enjoy reading Ms Coates books! The 42 rules for Superior Field Service takes a very challenging topic and breaks it down into clear bites! I especially liked Rule 17 - It is Good to Be Green as this is my passion. RoHS and REACH (the EU version and now in other regions such as China) have forced technology to innovate and remove identified hazardous substances from their product offerings. Many brand managers assume that the requirement is 'one and done' when the product ships to the customer as brand new. Most managers completely forget they have to sustain compliance until the END OF SUPPORT which can be years after the last unit shipped. Consider this is just one facet of field service and you can see why you need to read this book!

I thought the authors Rosemary Coates and Jim Reily did an exceptional job defining real solutions to the complexities of the day to day challenges of a field service organization. Great ideas and insights into a multitude of issues and systems. I also found the shared knowledge from top executives extremely helpful in my own organization. Since implementing some of the ideas from the book my customers are happier, my systems better organized and I’m even seeing an impact on my bottom line. The rules are easy to follow and easy to implement. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed this book – I refer to it often and recommend it highly.

I highly recommend this book for some one looking for ways to improve their Field service operations. The rules are very easy to follow and easy to implement if you choose to do so. I have been looking for this type of book for over six months now and I'm glad I finally found it.

42 Rules for Superior Field Service is a wonderful collection of decades of real-world experience from leading industry practitioners who have lived the good, the bad and disastrous of field service organizations. The book is written in style that enables the field service professional to put into practice quickly the lessons contained in this book. It is a quick read and is insightful from the front cover to the back cover. Seldom to you see this many pearls of wisdom is such a condensed and readable format. A must read for anyone associated with field service and supply chain management today.

Very clear language. Contains several tips for Field Service Managers especially for those who came from technical positions.Definitely will recommend.

One famous book begins with the following sentence: “Let there be light.” Many other books of the same category but of other persuasions also propose and follow this thought. The Kybalion is one of them. The Kybalion begins with this sentence: “The lips of wisdom are closed, except to Understanding.” In order to understand, there must be “light}. Understanding leads to wisdom. Wisdom can be passed on but only to those who are willing to experience, master, and better themselves. Note that wisdom is the higher octave of learning, meaning that one can learn something to get by in life but still not have wisdom. The universe is run by a set of laws. The Kybalion gives us a glimpse of these. This thin book is an alchemical modern-day distillation of – NOT creating worldly riches – but of creating mental and spiritual riches: wisdom. The authors are 3 anonymous ‘Initiates’ utilizing Hermetic Principles, passed down to wise “King” Solomon (whose name means “3 lights”, and who lived from 970-931 BCE). These Principles were then later passed down through the portals of the Ancient Mystery Schools 3 ½ centuries ago. Thus, information from that time has been slowly and carefully transmitted through many generations of those who have had the burning desire to question their existence on earth and want to know how they fit into the scheme of things, among other things. Information continued to be guarded by presenting allegorical ‘stories’ and being part of ‘initiations’ of learning and then having that knowledge themselves if they are deemed wise enough to use it properly. Only then could an ‘initiate’ progress onto even higher levels of thought and activity. (Note that one organization with roots in the distant past that survives even today has a person in office named the “Thrice Illustrious Master”.)Attaining wisdom in this way, from mouth-to-ear, this information was safely spread far and wide, and ‘nuggets of truth’ were written allegorically in order to deter or confuse those who didn’t have the correct knowledge ‘base’ to understand it or misuse the information. To originally write this book in 1908, the “3 Initiates” carefully examined the allegories and replaced them with a more practical, easy-to-understand book of these previously ‘hidden” philosophies. They did this as a tip of the hat to the changing of the times in the way that people were starting to think and learn. And to save time.Hermes Trismegistus (from which the word ‘Hermetic’ derives) was ‘half god/ half man’, living in the earliest days of the oldest of the Egyptian dynasties, and then in other incarnations (one of which was Greece) he was the son of Zeus and Maia, the daughter of Atlas. By virtue of being ‘half god/ half man’, he would have knowledge that mere mortals would not have. Hermes is the font from which Hermetic Philosophy flows. He is the progenitor and author of the Hermetic Corpus, a series of sacred texts. This book, The Kybalion is a ‘distillation’ of these original books. It may be the entire Corpus or may be only part of it. And hopefully, there was no ‘loss in translation(s)’. The word ‘Kybalion’ takes the form of a Greek noun but has no meaning. However, the word could, in a hidden form, relate to the word ‘Kabballah’Note that Hermes has had even later incarnations, all dealing with wisdom and its transmission into a multitude of other cultures.Unfortunately, moving through the ages, people started perverting the wisdom knowledge base, so beginning with the Middle Ages, this knowledge went underground. Nowadays, modern-day living does not lend itself to people using complex thinking and abstractions to gain wisdom because it is faster to watch movies (the tech people are the ones who decide what something looks like and how it behaves, etc.) and because the author, publisher, and head of the company or TV station inserts his/ her views to present to the public. Therefore, most things IT are anti-Hermetic. This is one of the main problems facing mankind today: the inability to think, reason, and understand abstractions without seeing them in movies, TV.Therefore, in order to gain wisdom, turn off all things IT (except for .PDF format reading devices) and read this and other books. The authors have distilled some major nuggets/ ideas for readers to think about, so that people can evolve; they can also continue to question ideas, and during this process, continue to refine themselves. Those that can’t do this fall away because they don’t have the mental strength to persevere. These people wouldn’t understand the concepts and may even pervert them because they lack the ability to stay with something long enough to learn from and benefit from it. Note also that people who evolve become refined by the trials and tribulations that they face; the result is wisdom and enlightenment, which is earned through hard work and perseverance. The authors of this book, the keepers of this knowledge/ wisdom slowly release their information in general terms to those who are new to gaining wisdom, for them to evolve and mentally and spiritually be able to stitch together the principles that make up the Great Work from all of the major light sources of every great religion or philosophy. These ‘New Initiates’ that are ready will have started to change themselves from a rough state to a refined state, like ancient alchemy refining lead into gold. The “nuggets” of truth gained while doing this are universal. This is one of a handful of books which many people who get on the path will eventually find. After the Introduction, there are 15 chapters in this book: Chapter 1. The Hermetic Philosophy; Chapter 2. The Seven Hermetic Principles; Chapter 3. Mental Transmutation; Chapter 4. The All; Chapter 5. The Mental Universe; Chapter 6. The Divine Paradox; Chapter 7. “The All” in All; Chapter 8. Planes of Correspondence; Chapter 9. Vibration; Chapter 10. Polarity; Chapter 11. Rhythm; Chapter 12. Causation; Chapter 13. Gender; Chapter 14. Mental Gender; and Chapter 15. Hermetic Axioms.Read the book and note especially what it says about the ‘wise’ and the ‘half-wise’. Read the book to learn about all of the other concepts. This book is so interesting that I have bought multiple copies of it to give to friends to read, discuss, and compare to other similar books. This book contains many “nuggets’ of information and should be on the bookshelves of those who seek the past to be able to translate the present and future. When you finish reading this book, read my Review of the “9 Faces of Christ”: (https://www.amazon.com/Nine-Faces-Christ-Quest-Initiate/dp/0875166652/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Nine Faces of Christ: Quest of the True Initiate ) to see more examples of wisdom and enlightenment and note the metaphysical process by which this is done. Compare and contrast main themes between “The Kybalion” and “9 Faces”.

I purchased this for my man who is incarcerated. He and I are really exploring a lot of these concepts. It is well written in the aspect that the information is not easy to consume without cumulative knowledge that you have acquired overtime. Initially when I was exposed to a lot of this I considered it hocus pocus mumbo jumbo because I had been brought us Christian all my life. I'm glad that this read did not fall into my life in the very beginning because it would've fell on deaf and dumb ears.If you are not ready to receive this type of information don't waste your time. It will go right over your head as it could've been with the old me. This is meant to be taken in light of itself not comparative to other texts. The best rule of thumb is listen to all spectrums, agreeable as well as disagreeable, with an open mind. Use your God given common sense because we all have it. Then you will be receptive. This information makes sense if you will be open to it. Actually if you really look, these are the same concepts that all these self help gurus who successful people follow are feeding you. They just package it a little differently and take out anything that might be offensive to the masses. I hope you find your enlightenment through it.

This little book will produce years of meaningful contemplation and has the potential to change lives. For example the principal of rhythm sates (in paraphrase) that no matter what extreme comes in life (or any other set of measure) - that it must in time return to an opposite and equal extreme - so when I have bad days ..and very, very bad days I find comfort in knowing that nature itself will recover them in time and equally good days and very , very good days will happen as the rhythm swings back the pendulum to balance it all out in an enigmatic work of universal justice. This is not a work of spirituality , but definitely sets perspectives of the deeper symmetries of physical reality.

A must for any progressing mind. The book is very thin if that anyhow is important to you. It has paper cover, so yes,it will not preserve well, but I am sure you don't buy books for their looks. If you can fully absorb 10 % of the info from the book, your life will change forever. The book is not an easy read if you are expecting a fast ride. Most people are likely not ready to approach this book thus why it clearly states in the very beginning of it that truth is spoken when you have ears ready to accept the words of wisdom. It will be good to read the book and find a practitioner hermitist since the book only have essence and does not cover topics such as WILL power. The book does give you keys to open or deepen any other knowledge, so if you are into astrology, numerology, any other occult science, you will have a tremendous insights into your studies as an extra unexpected bonus. Again, the book has essence and will keep bringing you back to it from time to time as you uncover more and more of its hidden wisdom.

A special friend and spiritual guide gave me her copy to read. She considers it a Bible for her life. After reading it, I ordered my own copy and I am reading and highlighting it again. Absolutely mind opening about the revelations of Hermes. Even if you are new to new thought, new age, spirit of mind, or any ideas of being a thought of the universe and not just a body, this book will expand your horizons exponentially! Read it, experience it. As Richard Bach wrote through his protagonist, Donald shimoda, in 'Illusions', "We are only here for two reasons: to learn and to have fun!" Continue your travels and enjoy the journey.

#9,109 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I gave this to my nephew on his 4th birthday thinking that his 1st reaction after opening it and saw it was a book would be to toss it aside and continue to excitedly rip open all his new toys. After the novelty of those wore off and he settled down and was willing to sit still to give the book a chance, only THEN would he fall in love with it. (He's not easy to impress for a 4 year old lol) Much to my surprise, he opened up the adorable box it comes in and his eyes lit up as he put on the tickle monster mitts and immediately asked me to read the book to him (twice and then tried to get me to read it to his dad because he thought it was the funniest book ever) all while he still had at least 15 big toys waiting to be unwrapped. He wore the mitts around for hours showing them off to everyone at his party and tears were shed by quite a few of his friends who wanted their own mitts!

Once in a while you come across that book that just has that extra magic in it.. one that your kids look forward to when you bring it out and one that they take extra special care of.Tickle Monster is one of those books. I have seen my three kids giggle, laugh and bond while they read this book to each other. They each have to have a turn being the Tickle Monster and wearing the gloves and I am amazed that at that age range (a 2 year old, 6 year old and 9 year old) they each find something special and inclusive about it. We love this book and recommend it to all our friends. It makes for a very special birthday gift with its beautiful magnetic box, soft and cuddly gloves and beautiful book.

This has become the nightly reward for our almost two year old for picking up her toys before bed. Whether it is only her and I or my husband and older daughter join in we have a great time giving her tickles every time the word tickle is read aloud. The well made box and fuzzy mitts allows us to make it an event not just simply a story. I can't say it is the best written book ever but it is silly and fun and has a mostly great rhythm. Highly recommend for toddlers!

Super cute story and so fun to be able to interact. I have given this as a shower and as a birthday gift and always get the most positive response! I don't always get to be there for the story telling, the fun part, but it has been my go to shower gift because of the positive response I have received from those who have. Everything is as pictured and appears super sturdy time with a young child prove destructive but when I received the book it appeared well crafted. The box appeared very durable with magnetic closure and could very easily be re-purposed.

My kids absolutely adore this book. We received this book as a gift several years ago and have used it so much that the pages were barely legible. We just purchased a new one and love it! The gloves are super soft and they fit my husband's huge hands but my kids can wear them too- so no matter who wants to become the tickle monster, the gloves will fit. The story is is adorable and the pictures are so bright and fun. I can't get enough of this book. We have had so many laughs from this book. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone with young kids or grandchildren.... you won't be sorry.

I can't even begin to tell you how much my daughter loves this book. This is definitely her absolute favorite book and between you and I, it's my favorite too. I have read this book to her so many times that I pretty much have it memorized.Just last week we had a book baby shower for a co-worker and of course this was the only book I wanted to get for them and I actually stood in front of everyone and read it aloud to all the adults as well.If you are ever in need of a gift idea for a mom to be or even a toddler gift, this should be the first on your list.

I love this book and interactive concept but the book I received is of poor quality. The binding has already began to come apart and it's only been read about 15 times. The mittens and box it came with are of better quality. I hope this book hold up over time because my little monster loves the story.

I was really skeptical about this. I bought it for my friend's child but half-suspected it was some b.s. gimmick churned out by a celebrity with too much time on her hands. How wrong I was. She LOVED it. Her mother read it to her Christmas morning and they had the best time with it. Those kids were showered with gifts, everything from Fingerlings to a trampoline, but this was the best of them all.

Review

“Smith’s brilliant, breathtakingly immediate sequence . . .  crackles with energy, curiosity, and mischief. . . .Even in the darkest periods, tendrils of life still strive toward the light. . . . Its creator wants to remind us that the pendulum can swing back and that one day the sun will return.”—Laura Miller, Slate “[A] moving mixture of the fantastical and the allegorical . . . Topical, sweet-natured, something fun to be inside.”—James Wood, The New Yorker “Extremely funny and seriously angry and experimental and heartbreaking, but never sentimental . . . In Winter, the light inside this great novelist’s gorgeous snow globe is utterly original, and it definitely illuminates.”—Meg Wolitzer, The New York Times Book Review  “It is not necessary to read Smith’s Autumn before her Winter; while the two books share a philosophical style and a playfulness with words, they don’t concern the same cast.  . . . Winter pays frequent homage to A Christmas Carol. . . . [Smith] spins a fine story. . . .  Winter is a stunning meditation on a complex, emotional moment in history.—Sarah Begley, TIME “Ali Smith is flat-out brilliant, and she's on fire these days. . . . [Winter] demonstrates yet again Smith's skill at revealing surprising relationships between seemingly disparate narrative threads. . . . You can trust Smith to snow us once again with her uncanny ability to combine brainy playfulness with depth, topicality with timelessness, and complexity with accessibility while delivering an impassioned defense of human decency and art. . . . Once again Smith has balanced darkness with light, bleakness with hope. —Heller McAlpin, NPR“Smith has conjured a kind of dream England in Winter an insubordinate folk tale . . . [and Smith] succeeds, jubilantly. . . . There are few writers on the world stage who are producing fiction this offbeat and alluring.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times   “Ali Smith’s virtuosic Winter is to pay attention to the world we’ve recently been living in. . . . Smith gives us a potent, necessary source of sustenance that speaks directly to our age. . . . The profound pleasure of these books is their near miracle. . . . [I]n the midst of Winter, each page touched with human grace, you might just begin to believe.”—Laura Collins-Hughes, The Boston Globe  “[Smith is] a really fearless novelist. . . . Her work is as alive as a fish on the end of a line. . . consistently breathtaking.″—Charles Finch, Chicago Tribune “Stunning prose. . . . often funny, sometimes wistful. . . . A sprightly, digressive, intriguing fandango on life and time.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“This second installment in Smith’s seasonal quartet combines captivating storytelling with a timely focus on social issues. Enthusiastically recommended; we’re now eagerly awaiting Spring.”—Library Journal (starred review) “[A] seasonal quartet through which British novelist Ali Smith is writing a classic, one mind-blowing installment at a time. . . . The stunningly original Smith again breaks every conceivable narrative rule. . . .It demands and richly rewards close attention. . . .—Mike Fischer, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel  “The second in Smith’s quartet of seasonal novels displays her mastery at weaving allusive magic into the tragicomedies of British people and politics. . . . A bleak, beautiful tale greater than the sum of its references.”—Boris Kachka, VultureINTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM:“A capacious, generous shapeshifter of a novel . . . [A] book with Christmas at its heart, in all its familiarity and estrangement: about time, and out of time, like the festival itself.” —The Guardian (The Best Fiction of 2017)   “[There are] glimmers of life, laughter and love. . . . Smith threads passages of delicately observed natural beauty throughout the ephemera. She often lets the language itself lead her (hence her love of puns), and the intricate narrative rolls back and forth smoothly in time.”—The Times Literary Supplement (London)“Winter is typical of the Scottish writer’s heart-starting (and often heart-stopping) fiction: all spark, lark and jumper-lead, playful, witty and gloriously challenging. . . . Balancing delicious and irreverent playfulness with deep seriousness, Smith’s engineering of tone and mode is one of many facets of the novel’s appeal. —The Australian  “Smith's deceptively unshowy writing evokes every shade of emotion. . . . Themes and experiences entangle, making Winter a dense, satisfying read. . . . It's to Smith's credit that Winter works on a number of levels, from a straightforward, quotidian tale about a fractured family to a deeper story packed with symbolism and highbrow literary references: a subtle meditation on loneliness, loss and aging in uncertain times.”—The Irish Independent“The novel is lucid and tightly constructed. . . . [I]ts disparate strands converge tautly to convey and deepen Smith’s powerful political message. . . . This wintry spirit of benevolence animates Smith’s vision of a world where empathy overrides divisions and where animosity can melt like snow. . . . Smith’s voice, so wise and joyful, is the perfect antidote to troubled times: raw and bitter in the face of injustice, yet always alive to hope.”—New Statesman “Smith combines her state-of-the-moment themes with a preoccupation for how to behave in a meaningful way in an increasingly technocratic world—and she does so with an effervescent seriousness none of her peers can match.”—Daily Mail   “A novel of great ferocity, tenderness, righteous anger and generosity of spirit that you feel Dickens would have recognised . . . Winter is at its most luminously beautiful when the news fades and merges with recent and ancient history, a reminder that everything is cyclical. There is forgiveness here, and song, and comic resolution of sorts, but the abiding image is of the tenacity of nature and light.”—The Observer (London) “Smith has both a telescopic and a microscopic eye. . . . Her many-layered artistry softens rage or sorrow. . . If Ali Smith’s four quartets in, and about, time do not endure to rank among the most original, consoling and inspiring of artistic responses to ‘this mad and bitter mess’ of the present, then we will have plunged into an even bleaker midwinter than people often fear.”—Financial Times  “One of Britain’s most important novelists . . . Winter is narrated with Smith’s customary stylistic brio . . . punctuated with clever word play . . . Heartwarming.”—The Irish Times  “Smith’s prose—that trademark mischievous wit and wordplay, a joyful reminder of the most basic, elemental delights of reading—makes us see things differently . . . The entire book is testament to the miraculous powers of the creative arts . . . Winter firmly acknowledges the power of stories. Infused with some much needed humour, happiness and hope.”—The Independent (London) “Calm, cool and consoling. . . . But still a sparkler. . . . [A] novel of visions, memories and family relationships.”—The Spectator “A novel which, in its very inclusiveness, associative joy, and unrestricted movement, proposes other kinds of vision . . . [A]stonishingly fertile and free . . . [Smith] finds life stubbornly shining in the evergreens . . . told in a voice that is Dickensian in its fluency and mobile empathy . . .  Leaping, laughing, sad, generous and winter-wise, this is a thing of grace.” —The Guardian  “Combines comedy with social criticism, playfulness with political indictment . . . Structurally, the book is intricate: a collage of flashbacks, flash-forwards and interior monologues . . . Smith is a self-consciously aesthetic writer who also has strong political convictions.” —The Sunday Times (London)“If Ali Smith’s four quartets in, and about, time do not endure to rank among the most original, consoling and inspiring of artistic responses to 'this mad and bitter mess' of the present, then we will have plunged into an even bleaker midwinter than people often fear.” —Financial Times  “Refracted through the lens of a broken family in a broken home, Smith’s vision is almost without redemption, but not quite; beneath the frozen ground, some hope exists.”—The Times (London)  “a novel of great ferocity, tenderness, righteous anger and generosity of spirit . . . Winter is at its most luminously beautiful when the news fades and merges with recent and ancient history, a reminder that everything is cyclical. There is forgiveness here, and song, and comic resolution of sorts, but the abiding image is of the tenacity of nature and light.”—The Observer  “(Smith) is cresting across the contemporary in a manner few novelists can manage. . . . Winter is a novel in which the cold also reveals clarity. Things crystallize. They become piercing and numbing at the same time. It is a book about being wintry in the sense of supercilious and hibernal, in its sense of wanting to shut the world out. The characters have to deal with both impulses, and deal with them in different ways. But the end result is a book that makes one think, and thinky books are rare as hen’s teeth these days.”—The Scotsman

Ali Smith has a way of drawing you into her world. I always find myself lost in her novels and, when I've finished them, at a loss as to how to summarize them. This review was stretching out way too long, so I'm starting again, paring away the details that you need to discover for yourself.'Winter' is both a family drama and a commentary on the changing climate--both the physical climate and the sociopolitical one. The family: three estranged people and a lovable impostor. The commentary: our world and what it is doing to humanity. One of Smith's targets is technology and the way it removes us from real relationships, responsibility, and personal authenticity. The egotism and isolation it creates feeds into the populist movements that brought us Brexit and Donald Trump, both of which come under Smith's verbal attack. There's a moment when Art, one of the main characters, reads about a crowdfunding effort to raise money to buy a boat that will repel Italian boats trying to rescue refugees. It's hard not to see in that the support in some American quarters for building a wall on the Mexican border and deporting Dreamers to "home countries" that have never in memory been their homes. And it's no surprise that one main character, Arthur, writes a successful blog, Art in Nature--even though he is never out in nature and is rarely artful; it's all just BS for attention and self-gratification.The family story: It's almost Christmas, and Art and his fiancée Charlotte committed to spend the holiday with his mother, Sophie, in Cornwall. But there's a problem: Charlotte, an environmental activist, has called out Art for his lack of any real commitment to pro-nature causes. (There's symbolism in the fact that she destroys his laptop on her way out.) But does Art call Sophie and explain the breakup? Of course not. Instead, he hires a young Croatian girl who looks like she could use some cash to pretend to be Charlotte. Lux turns out to be the quiet hero of the novel.Sophie and Art don't get along. Sophie, a once-successful businesswoman, doesn't get along with her aging hippie sister, Iris, who is always off somewhere saving the world. And lately, Sophie has been seeing things . . . namely, the floating head of a young child. It's Lux who tells Art that he must call Iris and tell her to come at once, despite the sisters' animosity.Enough said about the plot. The novel moves back and forth among the family members and back and forth in time through their memories, yet it always comes back to the present day, asking, How did we get to this place? Full of Smith's usual wordplay, 'Winter' gives us bittersweet of the art that once was and the nature that we're losing, yet somehow we're left not so much with a sense of doom as a ray of hope. I can't describe it any better than that without giving away far too much and making it sound like something it isn't. Read it. Find out for yourself. When you're done, you'll want to read it again.

Such beautiful writing that enfolds the depth, breadth and heft of experience. It's hard to write about this stunning book because my words feel impoverished in comparison to the writing of Ali Smith. So much to love - deep and insightful charaterisations, effortless bridging of different times in a flow and sweep of prose, important questions, perspicacious observations, sympathy for flawed and difficult individuals. There's a gentle and tender view underlying it all that is nonetheless fierce and compelling. I felt completely drawn into this universe and am sad that the book is finished. Looking forward to the next season in the set.

I'm becoming so enamoured with Ali Smith's style. This book is so cleverly witty, steeped in UK and global context, and depicts the roles and trends of modern communication technology. All done in a thought provoking way. The characters are vivid and enthralling. Now the long wait for Spring.

Pick up this book. Note how, in the hands of a literary master, no tricks are required. The counterpoint between characters falls exactly when, and as, needed to move the plot. Time moves forward. Time moves backward. I think of Lessing and Drabble.

This book could have had more life in it; more emotionality would have brought these characters to life. Instead I found I could barely distinguish between Charlotte, Sophie or Lux. They were all flat and their laconic speech was unengaging and seemed to me to be inconsequential. The male character, Art, who is related to two of them, appeared to be as ground down as the three women.I was very disappointed. The book received high praise from literary reviewers but not from me.

I like the prose, but with the reservation that it can be elliptical, and illusive. While "Autumn" was pretty clearly about mother/daughter in relationship to the daughter's friend and mentor, "Winter" seems to start with a surreal (or metaphorical) use of the "head" which follows her around, and a pretty straight-forward realistic novel. I found this mixture disconcerting, in that it divides the book into two halves.

A timely post-modern piece, with political undercurrents in Britain and even the US. But too fragmented. Good characters, good scenes, but lacking in momentum. This author's "Autumn" was much better, in the same mode.

Smith is doing a tetraology and Fall was one of my favorites of last fall and I thought this is going to be hard to equal. But Winter I reread as soon as I finished. Among many other delights, this is the best dysfunctional family Christmas novel ever
