I really enjoyed reading this book---it's a very nice reference on free energy calculation in general, and at the mean time, provides in-depth explanations of specific methods that are commonly used in computational chemistry, i.e., TI, FEP, ABF, Jarzynski.. The one thing I like the most is that the text is very well written. Even though it has quite a lot of statistical mechanics content (and many many equations), it doesn't feel hard to read at all. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the theory of free energy calculations and the various methods out there.

Free energy calculations have been around for several decades, and are now a field of their own, with its massive literature and a thick jungle of algorithms and implementations. Experienced researchers have to invest a lot of time to keep up to date (not everyone does), and to newcomers, it can be very confusing. Young researchers still use introductory material from the famous books of Allen and Tildesley, and Frenkel and Smit. While very precious, those are now old (especially Allen and Tildesley) and cover many other subjects, so they give little detail about classic techniques and virtually nothing about more recent ones, such as nonequilibrium methods or Wang-Landau sampling.This book brings together a handful of recognized experts from around the globe, who try to sum up the state of the art in free energy calculations in a concise, yet in-depth manner. Newcomers to the field will appreciate the first chapter, which gives an overview and an introduction to essential concepts. The following chapters present the main families of methods in a systematic way, from transition path sampling to simplified methods designed to treat large biological systems efficiently. Depending on each author's style, the chapters have different balances of raw theory and real-world applications. Even authors writing mostly about theory try to keep an eye on practical implications. Beyond the formally exact equations, many chapters put an emphasis on finite sampling errors and methods to minimize them: in real life, that often makes the difference between free energy calculations that work and those that don't.

My daughter (5) was starting to fall behind her first grade class in reading. I purchased this and one other set and have been having her read outloud daily. I love that there are two different levels, so when she finished the E level she could move right on to F. She is now right where she is supposed to be, and continues to improve. Highly reccomend!

The comic style books are engaging for my 1st grade students (I am a teacher). The pictures and stories are good quality while remaining readable for students whose independent reading level is an E or F. These books are appropriate for kids who are at-grade level 1st grade readers toward the beginning of the school year.

Second set I bought for my first grader. We love the First Little Comics and First Little Reader books. They are a good length for my six year old to read a book to me before bedtime and my 2 year old love the stories as well.

My son loved these books while he was learning to read. He was able to read each one and gained more confidence in his reading. It helped that the stories flowed well and that each page had a colorful picture that helped with the words

Perfect for reluctant reader. My 6 year old thinks reading is boring. These are short and interesting enough to keep my sons attention.

My kinder loves reading these books! Great practice for sight words and repetitive words. He can read most of the books on his own and can guess what the words are by looking at the pictures.

My students love these. They laugh and are engaged and tell me they want to keep them after reading them at home. No better compliment!

My 5 year old LOVES these. He is excited to read them and he loves doing the activities in the activity book.

SHOULD REVEAL MORE BUT STOPPED SHORT

"Even as a federal agent, I have been on surveillance or supporting an operation and have had an officer approach me and say that the neighbors called about a "suspicious" vehicle, which meant it was a black guy driving a car. I’ve been the man in that suspicious vehicle.”Matthew Horace worked as a cop at the federal, state, and local level for 28 years, and he is plenty sick of the “toxic brotherhood.” The quote above refers to an incident that occurred in Mill Creek, a (very white) suburb outside Seattle, Washington where I live, but it’s not just here; it’s everywhere in the US. Specifically, he tells us about cities where some of the most notorious cop violence has created resistance such as New Orleans, Chicago, Baltimore, and Ferguson.There are essays provided by police chiefs from some of these places as well as from Kathleen O’Toole, who was chief here in Seattle; O’Toole’s prose reek of electioneering, the sort of style that speaks for itself. Many of these contributors contradict Horace’s own assertion that the problem is endemic, and is absolutely not a case of a few bad apples. Even I, who am an old lefty and have never really believed cops were there to protect ordinary people, am shocked by much of what’s been revealed. I wondered, as I began reading, whether Horace could add to what’s already been said and shown. What could he add to the body of information provided by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Angela Davis, and Matt Taibbi? (Many years ago, Norm Stamper, former Seattle police chief, also wrote an expose that included a chapter on why cops beat Black men.)As it happens, Horace has a lot of information that I hadn’t read, and it isn’t just a matter of fine detail. For example, who knew that in New Orleans, cops were not merely accepting graft, but actively robbing Black-owned businesses, guns drawn, and making off with their cash and other valuables? It’s the sort of thing that lives in your head for a long time after you read it; but then again, it should be.The sourcing is impeccable.Those with an interest in Black Lives Matter, in civil rights in general, or with an interest in race issues within the so-called criminal justice system in America should get this book, for full price if necessary, and read it. Read the whole thing. So much of our future depends on how we respond.

The part about shootings and harassment back in the day by white men to black men doesn't surprise me it's knowing it's still going on. In this book we learn more about police abuse particularly to black officers, the many shootings of young black men like Michael Brown etc. Black Lives Matter. I really didn't know there was that many shootings of black men until reading this book. It's a enormous outcry in my mind. All in all this book is very interesting and kept me reading. I hated what Mr. Horace went through and the other black officers. This story needed to be told and everyone should pass this book around. Thank you Mr. Horace for telling this much needed book, it's about time someone did.One line will stay with me for a long time: If you call 911 who know who will show up. This is a lovely book. Essentially, it is a retelling of the Trojan War, but in light of the conclusions (always tentative, of course) of modern history, archaeology, epigraphy, physical anthropology, and the studies of multiple classical languages. The author clarifies (to the degree possible) the actual length of the war (shorter than ten years) and the actual number of combatants (far fewer than 100,000 on each side). For example, he notes that idiomatic Greek in Homer's time may use expressions comparable to our "On a scale of one to ten, how great . . . ?" Hence, the Trojan War is a ten but not necessarily ten years in duration.We learn at length about Greek and Trojan weapons, armament, foods and attitudes toward women. We hear the hisses of arrows in the winds and the sounds of spears hitting flesh targets, and realize the threats posed by malaria-carrying mosquitoes from the standing water on the Trojan plain.The information in the Iliad is supplemented by information from other literary fragments and the military practices of the Bronze Age are utilized as background material. The book is the product of massive research but the results are delivered in lovely prose that is accessible by a lay audience. In my opinion, this is the sort of book that academics should spend a good bit more time writing—a book that utilizes the results of serious scholarly research to clarify matters of significant interest to a general audience. Just a sample of the quality of the writing:"On the mountaintop, where the goats forage in the crevices between the rocks and the only sound beside their bleating is a sudden burst of wind in the wildflowers, the sky is the same shade of pale blue and gray as the eyes of the goddess Athena" (p. 183).The quotes from the Iliad are from Pope's translation and it is very special. One of the problems in the American university is that courses are taught to large numbers within the constraints of a semester or quarter and the readings must fit within those constraints. In the 18thc, e.g., students are never exposed to some of the masterpieces of the period (Pope's Homer, Gibbon's history of Rome, Johnson's Dictionary, etc.) because their size does not fit neatly into the syllabus. Here is the chance to hear some of Pope's Homer and it is wonderful.The book also contains a very helpful set of maps of the area, a 7-page glossary of key names and a long 'note on sources' which is, in effect, a set of 'additional readings'.For readers seeking an intelligent, informative and entertaining read, look no further.

There are countless interpretive views of The Iliad, The Trojan War, and the historical epochs within which each was written and/or possibly occurred. Most I've read range from the dismissive, that is, "not history," to the inclusive, that is, emphasizing Homer's historicity. Mr. Strauss supports elements of those extremes, but more firmly grasps a view that does not simply affirm, nor deny, those aspects, rather he offers a far more useful, practical, and historically reasonable explanation of the characters, motives, strategies, and depictions of them, in context. It is the view of an historian with an easy writing style that posits, then makes points in a clear and direct manner. It's a short treatment, an easy and worthwhile read for anyone interested in the subject(s). My only negative is I wished for MORE.

For centuries the established wisdom has held that the Trojan War is pure myth, a heroic fabrication of poets like Homer. This idea was little altered even with the discovery of Troy's ruins. Barry Strauss's contention in this book is that Homer's account is not as outlandish as has been believed. Strauss doesn't attempt to show that the Trojan War occurred in exactly the way Homer described, but only that it certainly could have. He does an admirable job.The book takes most of its structure from the Greek myths themselves, especially the version found in The Iliad. Strauss begins with Paris abducting Helen and proceeds rapidly from there to the final destruction of proud Ilium. Each chapter covers a particular section or theme found in The Iliad, including the initial abduction, the bickering between Achilles and Agamemnon, the plague, the nighttime treachery of Odysseus and Diomedes, and the great final duel between Hector and Achilles.With each section Strauss adopts something of an "if-then" approach, for example: if a Trojan prince named Paris seduced and abducted a Greek queen how would it have happened, knowing what we now know historically and archaeologically about that period in history? IF he had THEN they may have spoken in Greek, or perhaps Luwian, a near-relation of Hittite etc. The results are endlessly fascinating. Strauss clearly knows his stuff and knowing you're in the hands of a master makes the book a joy to read.The book is not without its flaws. It's very short, offering a very tasty sample of a rich subject but not a full course meal. And, quite honestly, the vast majority of Strauss's work is conjecture. Well-reasoned conjecture based on extensive research and an obviously keen mind, but conjecture nonetheless. Also, Strauss extrapolated from the Hittites and Egyptians just a little too often. They may have lived in close proximity in both time and place to the bronze-age Greeks and Trojans described here, but there still must have been huge cultural differences.In the end, all we do know for sure is that Troy once was and then burned to the ground in some catastrophe. Whether Strauss's book offers the answers or not, it is engaging, enlightening, and never boring. It gave me not only a greater appreciation for the history that may lie behind the myth, but for the myth--and Homer's account of it--itself. The next time I read The Iliad I'll do so with this book firmly in mind.Recommended.

Cute book with a little text on each page. For toddlers can use turtles to practice counting with the numeral displayed. As they get older read text as well as counting turtles. Be aware that Countdown is true - counting backwards from 10.

This is a great counting book for toddlers and preschoolers, as young as age 2. I'm sure older kids would enjoy it, too, as it teaches about the different animals that come to the pond (and has more detail in the back section about the animals encountered). The rhyming and great pictures will keep younger children entertained, even if they don't yet get the concept of how to count. I love the artwork and all the creatures the turtles encounter in the pond. I'm looking for more books by this author.

For an exploratory introduction into supply chain, this is a great book. Bowersox has boiled it down into an easy-to-exaplain and clear overview. Some topics could have been expanded into more thoroughly.

Just a note to support others here who have suggested this book is a hard read. The first 5 chapters, which make up the introductory section of the book, are especially dry and the wording overly academic. The next section, which moves into more specific topics is slightly better. I am a graduate student and I like to read textbooks so it is especially bad if I can't get through it. There were brief occasions where the text actually used clear language and provided examples and they provided a sad glimpse of how interesting this subject would suddenly become to students given a good introduction. Please consider having these first 5 chapters rewritten for the next edtion!
