I rarely award a 5-star book review -- reserving those for the best of the best, amazing books that truly move me or the occasional gem that makes it to my list of all-time favorites like Atlas Shrugged or To Kill a Mockingbird. While The Heiress of Linn Hagh (and the 2nd book, The Sans Pareil Mystery) don't quite hit those thresholds, they both deserve 5 stars in their own right. Charlton wrote not one excellent mystery, but two. They are, by far, among the top 5 mysteries I've read in the past few years, and I hihgly recommend them to anyone who enjoys mystery books. When I purchased this one, I expected it to be a fairly predictable, simple mystery (not sure why, but that was my expectation). To my pleasant surprise, it pulled me in and kept me reading late into the night. Both novels are intriguing, engaging and feature a surprising number of plot twists. This case, in particular, has one piece that makes it seem impossible to solve (how did the heiress get out of her locked tower bedroom?) The characters are intelligent and likable. Anyone who likes mysteries should read both of these books. I can't wait to read more from this author!

This is the first book of a relatively new series of period-piece British mystery novels. It is well written and entertaining. The book’s story is placed in the first decade of the 19th century in England. It is centered around the work of the somewhat enigmatic police detective Stephen Lavender and his jovial side-kick, Constable Ned Woods. They are based in London, but not infrequently they are sent into the English hinterlands to solve particularly difficult crime mysteries. In the example of this book, they are sent north into rural Northumberland. The author has done an excellent job of researching the time and place settings for her story, and she writes in a captivating style which is sprinkled with now archaic English words, which were in common usage 200 years ago. With more lucidity and realism than most, the author does not gloss over the unpleasantness and challenges of both urban and rural life in pre and nascent industrial societies of our forebearers. For example, she refers to the smells and health risks associated with large amounts of animal feces in urban streets and markets when most transport was horse drawn, and the pollution of the Thames River. The writing employs a pace and complexity which holds the reader’s attention, and for me at least it became a real page turner. A personal quibble with this book is that I thought that the tangential referral to Lavender’s love interest was an unnecessary diversion, which distracted from the quality of the central story. However, subsequently, I have been somewhat chastened, as it turns out the woman plays a central role in the next book in the Lavender mystery series. This book is a good contribution to the genre of period-piece British mysteries.

I only started to read this book because I didn't have time to start a new series, and I didn't think I would be continuing beyond book 1. What a pleasant surprise to enjoy this book so thoroughly. I loved Detective Lavender and Constable Woods. Their relationship and the dialogue was well written and humorous. The mystery held my interest from beginning to end. I loved the relationship between Lavender and Magdalena and thought it was poignant and sweet. I just finished book 2 and am looking forward to the next book that is due on August 30. Karen Charlton is an excellent writer and I plan to read all of her books. I didn't want to start a new series, but her books are too compelling for me to stop now.

I wasn't sure at the outset that I would like this book, set in England in 1809. The author's use of the common vernacular of the time put me off initially, but I came to actually appreciate her efforts to be realistic. London detective, Stephen Lavender, and his constable, Ned Woods, have accepted an assignment to search for a missing heiress in northern England. What a cast of characters they encounter along the way as they travel by coach and four, and when they arrive at their destination. This book has it all: the heiress's loving aunt and great-uncle who are trying to find her, the evil step-siblings who may or may not be involved with the disappearance, the colorful local folk who hang out at the tavern where Stephen and Ned are lodging, and even a band of gypsies thrown in. Lavender's investigative intellect reminds one of Sherlock Holmes, and Woods contributes to their efforts as well. I was able to predict some of this tale's ending, but not all of it. If you enjoy a period piece of intrigue, mystery, and some drama thrown in along the way, then you will enjoy this book. Although I was doubtful at the start, I rated this novel 4 stars and have already started the sequel, The Sans Pareil Mystery.

This book had an excellent plot. The author kept the action going and left enough clues so that the reader could guess some of the outcome. However , the book was riddled with historical inaccuracies. First of all she used the expression "stake out" when Constable Woods was doing surveillance. This expression didn't come into existence until the 1940s. Another issue is the missing heiress' fortune. Her grandfather was described as a man of "vast interests", but her fortune was only £10,000. That wasn't a pittance, but it wasn't remarkable either. In Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Mr. Willoughby jilted Marianne Dashwood for a woman with £50,000. Willoughby's income of £600 per year from his estate was inadequate to the lifestyle he was leading as a bachelor. The interest on £10,000 would be between 400 and 500 per year, depending on how it was invested. There are other examples, but I won't make this into a laundry list. Suffice it to say that I won't be.buying the next book in the series.

Clearly, the author knows about sketching. The language, grammar, and tone were just not that great. My guess is that the author is not a native English speaker. There are typos. There are times when the author uses phrases like if we process all information we will be a "vegetable," "why the hell?," telling the viewer, "I know you are absolutely dumb."The author has enthusiasm for his subject matter and probably has a great personality. He probably should have used an editor to clean up the language, grammar, and tone.O

I'm still reading this book. I have been struggling with the subject of perspective for a long time. As a result, I have purchased many books on the subject. I like this one because it's different and I like the author's method of teaching. Try a sample. You might agree with me!

Author has simplified how to compose a picture and few rules which you can and should break to make it more interesting. Just as the authors first book, in this book also he has explained in very detail on how to compose and sketch, very easy read for a beginner and if anyone is delaying to take action on sketching, this book actually will force or encourage to get into the mode of sketching. The author has kept the tone informal and playful. This ensures that even though the topic is slightly technical, the book never gets hard to read and is a fun learning.

The book is very technical and goes into super detail about how perspective affects your art, based on the title I was looking for more help with actual sketches, but his attention to and explanation of the reasons why composition and perspective matter, was great.

The basic knowledge was enough to capture my interest in sketching again. I stopped in middle school and feel inspired. Also became aware of similarities between the visual concepts of "composition" and "perception" and audio music production.

It is not the fantastic book I thought it would be. Poor quality of impression, paper and some mispelling words.

There are fancier, more technical art books out there but I enjoyed this one. Sometimes a down to earth approach can be just as valuable. And even though I am not new to art or drawing I did learn something. I've read about perspective before and as a self taught artist (like the author) some of it just felt overwhelming to be perfect. The artist reminded me that perspective is about possibilities. So freeing and completely relateable. My goal is not perfection but inspiration. Thank you to the artist.

I had expected "Caravans" to read like the only other Michener book I've read, "Hawaii": a sweeping, multi-generational narrative holding together an entertaining history of the kingdom(s) turned state.Instead, I lived a year of a young American man's life as he comes of age in post-WWII Afghanistan.I can't remember the last time I wanted climb inside a novel. The prose is fluid and clean and perfect. The exotic scenes are richly described, the characters layered and living."Caravans" is wise and philosophical, but crisp as the night desert air he makes you breath, and as seemingly simple as the "primitive" culture main characters witness.An epic journey.

Michener creates a compelling story of a search across Afganistan, of a desert journey by jeep and then journey by foot/horse/camel that allows him to portray some of the grandeur and history of Afganistan and its people post World War II. The relevance of this country has only increased in current times, which contributed to my fascination with his portrayal of life in the late 1940s. Michener's story addresses universal questions about the nature of evil and forgiveness through invoking the particulars of a German doctor/war criminal who has taken refuge in Afganistan who unknowingly tells his story to a Jew, Mark MIller, the protagonist. Mark's desire to take vengeance but his ultimate ability to have compassion give rise to questions about the meaning of forgiveness. This theme gets repeated in interactions between the 'missing' American' young woman, whose rejection of gender and societal expectations in post-War America lead her to a series of unconventional choices and relationships, and her husband, and the other men who love/desire her. Ultimately, her utter self absorption mars the reader's ability to empathize with her, but we are reassured that she will embrace whatever adventures come her way and land on her feet. Michener weaves a compelling tale and his fascination and love for the land come through vividly. A worthwhile read that is still relevant and carries universal themes-- a 'coming of age' novel set in a country with a dramatic history and people.

FINAL REVIEW ...OK - I finished - - and I’m GLAD I did. The reading remained somewhat tedious through the 85% mark but (as one might expect from an author of Michener’s stature) his intent gradually became crystal clear and, I guess, some of the tediosity was necessary. He was building an analog (in words) of the archaeological site for which he describes a discovered history. The analog IS a word picture for the Jewish peoples - of the area of the Middle East and Europe - with references to the American diaspora.Ultimately, this word picture weaves together to provide the reader with a very clear “explanation” for Israel’s collective mentality (if it is at all fair to assume that there IS such a thing any longer) and approach to the rest of the Middle East - - and, indeed, the world.Israel came into existence during my childhood - - but the struggle necessary to achieve said existence escaped my pre-teen attention. Michener BROUGHT it to my attention (even if only through only a small example) and made it crystal clear why Israel - as a nation - may seem “overly-defensive” today. (Had I been part of the struggle to establish and build the country - - - I would have been - and would likely remain - JUST as defensive!)Israel is ENTITLED to its “defensiveness” - as are Jewish peoples in the rest of the world. “NEVER AGAIN!” must remain a vivid and active watchword - - for them - - and for ALL of us!ORIGINAL REVIEW...I'm about 60% of the way through this tome and I am finding it to be - in a word - TEDIOUS. I will finish - - but I can hardly wait until I get to the end of this brick.Michener starts in "present day", flits back to many centuries BCE and then slogs his way through history (with occasional side trips back to present day). Through much of the first half of the book, it seems to be a novelized history of the Jewish peoples, their trials, tribulations and laws. Not being a fan of ANY "organized religion", I find this presentation barely retains my attention.

This was the perfect book to read before I left for Israel, when I was in Israel, and after my trip to Israel. It is 1200 pages and it did take several weeks to go through it. I found it to be very entertaining and informative. I could actually visualize the places that Michener drew us to with his historical stories. I learned so much and a great time reading the chapters as I traveled through these areas. It was a an added bonus to learn about various religions and understand how they are so interwoven.

The book traces the rise of religion in general but primarily Judaism. It is told, in typical Michener style, as a series of shorter interconnected stories. I particularly appreciated the educational aspects of the novel as I learned a lot about foreign religions and cultures that I probably wouldn’t have learned on my own. Great book for a reader familiar with Michener’s style and interested in religion and its roots.

Of COURSE I love the SOURCE--I've just finished reading it for the FIFTH time since first becoming aware of it in the late 1970s. (It's my favorite of the Michener novels, with Centennial, Alaska, and Hawaii coming in second, third, and fourth.) Michener's historical-novel style storytelling really shines in THE SOURCE. Every time I read it, I gain new insights about the history of religion and civilization in Israel, and I also gain greater respect for the Jewish faith and the important role it has played and will continue to play through time in humankind's journey of faith. On a more selfish note, we fans of Michener know that if we want to read his paperback or hardcover books, we have to like "weight lifting," as most of his books are at least 900 pages. In anticipation of this latest rereading, though, I finally ordered "The Source" as a Kindle book. Who would have thought reading Michener's novels could be considered "light" reading?!

I’ve probably read 40 books since I considered a book to be a five star. The story is ncredible and believable. The characters so well developed and there was never a moment where the story left me wanting. Can’t say enough good. Now, I hope it does not become a movie because there is no way it can be given justice in two hours ... but a 10 hour series ... I’m in!

Another excellent book! My only advice is be sure you buy and read The Whistleblower before you read The Last Act. Both are extremely well done! Great job, Mr. Parks!

The Last Act has a bit of a slow start, and to be honest, I wasn't sure if I would like the book. I've read this author before, so I should've known better because that slow start is like a calm before the storm. That lull is like a lure, pulling you into a false sense of security before it all goes crazy. The premise for this one seems over the top to me, and does require a suspension of disbelief with the danger the FBI is willing to allow a private citizen to put himself in. Tommy is offered a large sum of money for doing what he does best - acting, playing a part. Except this part may well cost him his life. Of course, the number of ways this job could go wrong kept running through my mind, and I really wanted to give Tommy a good shake to stop him. That wouldn't have made much of a story though, and off Tommy goes to prison. Naturally, things start to go wrong and just get worse from there with plenty of twists and edge of your seat moments for our characters. The story kept me turning pages, but the thing that impressed me most was Tommy. I'm not, nor have I ever been an actor, and thankfully, I've never had any dealings with a drug cartel or prison, but Tommy is just so relatable and likable that even when I wanted to scream at him not to do this, I was still rooting for him. This is one of those stories that I can easily see as a movie, and it's definitely one that I would buy a ticket to see.

Tommy Jump is a relatively unknown actor out of acts, having nothing to look forward to and in low financial straits. One of his friends invites him to consider what most would view as an unlikely scenario. It’s one that invites fine acting since it could otherwise wind up with the actor under attack or even dead. With healthy skepticism, Tommy meets with Fed agents and hears a real proposal that raises Tommy’s hackles but also intrigues him.Imagine Mitchell Dupree is a prisoner who has been convicted of four years’ worth of money laundering for a drug cartel, New Colima, led by a vicious criminal El Vio. Mitchell still has not surrendered the information about documents in his possession that could lead to the arrest of the entire cartel and its head. Tommy’s job would be to become a prisoner and ferret out where the missing documents are being hid. All Tommy has to do is take on a fake persona, go to jail and make friends with a banker, who is hiding documents that will incriminate a Mexican drug cartel boss. Needless to say, Tommy accepts the job and prepares himself and his fiancée for the 6 month acting gig.When Tommy enters the jail, he makes sure to make friends, getting himself closer to the banker. He also gets his FBI friends to give him contraband from the outside to use to bribe prison mates in helping him get what he needs.What follows is an interesting, as well as suspenseful story that is told in multiple pov’s (Tommy, his fiancée, the drug lord, and assistant to the drug lord). While Tommy is working to discovering where the documents are, we get glimpses how dangerous and evil the drug boss is, as he thinks nothing of killing anyone on the spot. We also get a close up of the assistant, who is determined to find the documents, before his boss kills him. It is a very exciting story line, and very well written by Parks.The Last Act is fast paced, suspenseful, and intense; which keeps us glued to the book until the very end. I do not want to give too much information, as there are so many twists and surprises all through the book. Tommy was a great character, who evolves as the story continues; especially with the many twists along the way that change everything. The Last Act was a gripping story that was so well written by Parks. If you enjoy suspense thrillers, I suggest you read this book.

You might find it useful as a way to begin studying Spanish on your own, though for me, that would be impossible. I bought it to refresh my very old high school Spanish for a trip to Spain and found it less useful than 15-Minute Spanish for that purpose, partly because 15-Minute has more traveller-oriented vocabulary and partly because it teaches Castillian pronunciation and LL uses Latin-American. (I learned Castillian 'way back when.)That is not to criticize the product as much as Amazon. It's something that should be somewhere in the product description. Not the only time I have found a description to be incomplete.

Very impressive. All inclusive & immersive!!!

At nearly 62, it is hard to teach yourself another language, but this course has helped me enough to be able to at least communicate on the most basic level . It takes much longer to get things to stick in my head at my age, but you can repeat the CD's as much as is needed and hear how the words are pronounced. It's very helpful!

Helpful for learning Spanish

You really must use the book and do the lessons from the book as the CD can be confusing. I had to constantly rewind the CD to get the lessons "sink in". I used this as a companion to the Spanish class I took this past autumn. Honestly, all the instructor did was follow the book page by page. I should've just canned going to class and studied from the book and CD. This course focuses on learning your numbers, easy phrases, how to break down the family tree, etc. If you've never tried Spanish before this is most definitely for beginners...very basic Spanish and not for those who already have a basic understanding of the language. I would've given more stars, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Dr. Blum’s marketed this kit in her online store as:1. “….all the supplements that you need to follow the 90-Day program in Dr. Blum’s book”2. “we created this kit to make following the Healing Arthritis Program outlined in Dr. Blum’s book easy for you!”3. “This kit is perfect for following the Arthritis Protocol from Dr. Blum’s book, Healing Arthritis.”I was excited the day the kit arrived and then shocked when I unpacked it. It only had 50% (based on cost) of the supplements outlined in her book for Steps 1 & 2 and nothing at all for at Step 3…..so if you expected supplements for all 3 Steps you only got 20% of what you needed.When I complained they told me this kit wasn’t to follow the program in this book but was for a brand new Online Program. Really? Their advertising sure sounded like it was for the program in this book. I wrote 4 letters to push them to change their advertising so no one else would get duped. I also asked them to stand by their original advertising and send me the missing supplements. See a picture of the ad they are still running today.Just so you know if you want the supplements for all 3 Steps of the program in Dr. Susan Blum’s book it will cost you over $4,000. Stunned? Me too – and I thought $775 price tag was outrageous.Should it have been a huge red flag that she heavily peddled her own products in this book like other reviewers have mentioned? Before spending $775 I should have read the reviews on other sites about her and her medical practice. My experience makes me wonder if any of the content in this book is true.So far they have refused to honor the original advertising and send me the missing supplements. Seems like they can’t figure out what the right thing to do is…..as they have referred it to their lawyer. Good Grief!

Very technical advice with supporting studies. I have had some improvement after 6 weeks on 6 month protcol. Motivated to stay on program.
