Although a great thesaurus in book form, this is not set up well for the kindle. The only way to move through the book is with the Search this Book or FIND feature on the kindle. This takes you to locations where your desired word may be but not to the word itself. Very frustrating to use! A waste of $10.00. Very diasppointed.... all it would need is a search built in similar to a dictionary. Again, a great Thesaurus but not for the kindle.... too bad!

There are people who love words for their own sake and those for whom words are tools of their trade - and there are some, like myself, who are both word lovers and word users. "Super Thesaurus" is a book that should delight all three groups, at least for a while. "Super Thesaurus" tries to differentiate itself from competitors by being "super". It boast s not only synonyms, but is something of a "reverse dictionary"; poses as a "vocabulary book", a feature of limited value; claims to have quotations that double as synonyms and, for good measure, antonyms. For the very discerning, "Super Thesaurus" does not measure up to the classics such as the original Roget's and Rodale's, but it is fun to use and helpful as well. By way of example, "death" includes familiar synonyms like "demise", slang like "lights out" and the promised quotations, such as "a black camel which kneels at the gates of all". In the "word find" or reverse dictionary entry for "death", you find morsels like "gurgle at last breath: death rattle". Oddly, here are no antonyms for death listed. You can't be too rich, too beautiful or have too many dictionaries and thesauri. For the low price, this is a fun and useful thesaurus.Jerry

I've been operating with a 1974 Webster New World Thesaurus for over a year now. It was purchased at a garage sale I think and the more I needed it the less I wanted to rely on it. It didn't contain nearly the amount of words I KNEW exisited and I couldn't figure out how this book could call itself a Thesaurus when it didn't even have words like ABATE, ABACK, ABET, JEER, COMMISERATE, just to name a few. I actually did a little jump when I finally recieved my Super Thesaurus in the mail and have used it nearly everyday since. It's a blessing and the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I am afraid of the spine cracking allowing pages to become loose and the print is rather tiny (small, diminutive, little, wee, puny, miniture, minute, miniscule, lilliputian, dwarf, pygmy, pint-sized, pocket-sized, teeny, itsy-bitsy, microscopic, infinitesimal) but I''m so excited to have an actual THESAURUS that I just dont care. It's worth the buy people. I PROMISE!

Roget is my favorite list maker. I have a good sheet with my own cross referencing that i was creating and using in my writing and editing. Why? because a thesaurus just isn't enough. This? this is my hero. it is exactly what i was creating, but in complete form. there are several Roget's, and i recommend owning all of them.

I'll make this quick: I write (commercially) for a living. I'm often looking for another word so I don't get/sound repetitive. OR a better word meaning the same thing. It's the writing "game." This is better than a dictionary. I already know how to spell. This is the THIRD one I've bought! I have the 2nd and 3rd editions. The 2nd edition is shopworn. The 3rd edition on its way to being shopworn. I use em all the time. One at home; one at work.Hands down, if you're serious about writing and/or word usage, this is THE BIBLE! Er, absolutely best on the market.

Although second-hand books advertise delivery times of 2-3 weeks, this one arrived within a few days of my ordering it, which was very timely! I'd been tutoring a young man in reading and writing all summer, and he was delighted with the large print and easy use of this thesaurus. He went from simple sentences (subject noun + overused verb + unadorned object) to compound and complex sentences in the course of the summer, employing exciting verbs and colorful adjectives with zest! I ordered the book for him to take to 7th grade with him. It was in fantastic shape for a very small price which lit up the face of an aspiring young writer! Thank you so much, GoldVictory (bookseller)! You made my day and a bright new school year for a deserving young man!

I've used this Thesaurus almost every day since I purchased it. I got a smokin' deal (barely used) from one of Amazon's partners.I needed to replace an old Roget's from my high school days as it was being held up by a rubber band. This one has additional features which I frankly haven't used yet. But for a basic word tool, I have no complaints or issues with how this one is laid out. I love my Thesaurus!

Bought as a gift, loved it and uses it all the time.

Great map but it does not cover the whole river valley. I'm going to Amboise, east of Tours. It's not on the map.

When people talk about visiting the Loire Valley, generally they mean the area that includes Blois, Orleans, chateaux and the like. That area is not included in this map, though how would you know when buying online? I'm so disappointed that I got a map I don't need. It is completely useless for me. And now I am out the money.

it helped

I ordered this map as we were driving from Paris to the chateaux of the Loire valley two weeks ago. This is the only choice that comes up when you search for Loire valley Michelin road maps on amazon. Unfortunately, none of the area surrounding the towns of amboise and tours, where all the castles are located, is included on this map! I unfortunately did not discover this until my family and I were on the road in our rental car . So it is completely unused.

Need this and 518 to do the whole Loire valley. Excellent maps

This map covers to just a bit east of Tours. Many castles and chateaus are not included on the map. Much of the Loire Valley is not on this map.

Michelin maps are excellent, but one needs to be able to see the map before purchasing it. I will never again buy another map over the internet as only one of four maps that I bought actually covered the area where I was traveling.

This is a very useful map that is essential for planning a trip to Loire Valley with good scale and illustrations.

Wow! Just got my copy a couple of days ago and I'm already hooked. I haven't read even half the stories yet and find myself picking it up every spare minute. There is something for everyone including humor, suspense, intrigue, romance, and inspiration. "All Light and Darkness" is beautifully written, poetic and inspiring. "The Howler on the Sales Floor" is a quick read full of humor and sarcasm. "Mara's Shadow" has the intrigue and technical writing required by an action/thriller audience. I am amazed by the mixture of cultures, time periods, and plot lines found in this excellent anthology. I highly recommend it!

This anthology, with its wide canvas and thought-provoking tales, ensures that science fiction and fantasy are endlessly appealing to a global audience. I have come to rely on this annual publication for both inspiration and enlightenment. Illustrated by the best new talent in the field, with stunning color plates now adding to the book’s appeal, WOTF is judged by such best-selling popular authors as Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card, David Farland, and many others. As I expected the stories are astonishing and meaningful, populated by colorful characters and strange circumstances. There is something here for everyone – suspense, techno-gadgetry, futuristic thrillers, parables and fantastic adventures. The fiction stories are “Turnabout” by Erik Bundy, “A Smokeless and Scorching Fire” by Erin Cairns, “The Howler on the Sales Floor” by Jonathan Ficke, “The Minarets of An-Zabat” by Jeremy TeGrotenhuis,, “Odd and Ugly” by Vida Cruz, “Mara’s Shadow” by Darci Stone, “hat Lies Beneath” by Cole Hehr, “The Face in the Box” by Janey Bell, “Flee, My Pretty One” by Eneasz Brodski, “A Bitter Thing” by NRM Roshak, “Miss Smokey” by Diana Hart, and “All Light and Darkness” by Henrie Gillett. Also included are short stories by contest founder L. Ron Hubbard, and judges Brandon Sanderson and Jody Lynn Nye. Yet additional features include informative essays by Hubbard, Orson Scott Card, Ciruelo and Jerry Pournelle. The illustrators are Adar Darnov, Kyna Tek, Sidney Lugo, Brenda Rodriguez, Ven Locklear, Reyna Rochin, Quintin Gleim, Bea Jackson, Maksym Polishchuk, Bruce Brenneise, Alana Fletcher, Jazmen Richardson, Anthony Moravian, and Duncan Halleck. As an avid reader and admirer of quality fiction, I strongly encourage readers to pick up Writers of the Future 34. The future of literature is safe as long as we have this contest available to showcase such outstanding work.

A volume to revel in creative genius and originality! Each story is unique and entertaining; this edition is already being passed around my high school classroom as an after-work treat and inspiration for the budding writers and illustrators that share my day. "Miss Smokey" is a special favorite due to the mix of humor and pain of self-sacrifice, all in the name of giving hope and encouragement to disadvantaged youth.

Every year I read Writers of the Future. Some years there are a lot of stories I like, and some years there are only a few. For this latest edition, #34, I liked most of them. My favorite was "The Howler on the Sales Floor," a humor piece about an out-of-its-element supernatural person in an office job. “The Minarets of An-Zabat” had some great imagery, and "Miss Smokey" made me laugh. I recommend this anthology highly, because there are enough stories here that you should like at least three or four of them.

When I read a book of short stories I find myself reading them in a random order. So far I have enjoyed all of the ones I have read, some amazing talented writers were chosen for this writers of the future book ! I do want to comment on Miss Smokey. The main character shows herself to be a strong female with a job that made me wonder why she stayed until the end when the why she stays is revealed .Well written with a bit of everything in it and good character development that I do not always see in short stories . Now I want more !

Love all the amazing stories. I’m a huge science fiction fan and I enjoyed reading these short stories. Perfect quick read, definitely makes me want to follow these authors and see what other books they have. The illustrations were AWESOME!

Awesome book as usual. I can see why this book is always top rated since hundreds of stories are submitted but only the best ones gets published. A safe bet to buy. I read the first four stories and they were great but all so different.

I am truly enjoying this anthology, though I generally read three or more book series. However this collection doesn't disappoint in the least, and I have a feeling many of these authors will be on the Sci-fi, Fantasy Best Sellers Lists very soon.

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Outgoing fifth grader Olive has a problem: she's good friends with almost everyone in her class, but she isn't best friends with anyone. She's perfectly happy in her role as floating social butterfly until it comes time for the big variety show, when all her friends form acts without her before she realizes what's going on. Olive sinks slowly into depression as she fails to "click" with any of her cliquey friend groups, until funky, green-haired Aunt Molly invites her over for an aunt-niece sleepover. After spending the night watching old TV variety shows, Olive is inspired by the witty hosts and hostesses who introduce and banter with the acts on their shows, and dreams about taking on that role herself for the variety show. Can she convince her friends and family that this is the right fit for her? Heavy lines and calm pastels create the perfect tone to offset this introspective story of self-discovery. Well-defined, consistent frames and gutters, along with clear-cut visual storytelling and readable lettering, make this an excellent recommendation for fans of the format and newcomers alike. VERDICT Those who enjoy Raina Telgemeier, Victoria Jamieson, and the like will find this a lighter but welcome addition and be happy to hear Olive's adventures will continue.-Darla Salva Cruz, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NYα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

"This bright and friendly graphic novel is rendered with pleasing, pastel-toned illustrations reminiscent of Raina Telgemeier's art and should appeal to a similar audience."--Kirkus "Kids who have ever worried about their friendships or popularity will find solidarity in Olive’s familiar story. This story of a kid learning how to use her voice will appeal to fans of Shannon Hale’s Real Friends (2017)."--Booklist "Well-defined, consistent frames and gutters, along with clear-cut visual storytelling and readable lettering, make this an excellent recommendation for fans of the format and newcomers alike. Those who enjoy Raina Telgemeier, Victoria Jamieson, and the like will find this a lighter but welcome addition and be happy to hear Olive’s adventures will continue."--School Library Journal "In both the text and art, Miller’s debut authentically conveys nuanced challenges and everyday moments of childhood, offering a guide for kids navigating friendship, family, and goals."--Publishers Weekly

'Click' is a charming, well-crafted kids title that doesn't talk down, or even kneel, to its audiences level but gets all the way in the sandbox. A slice-of-life story, the stakes are low and the problems are emotional, but finds its drama in the very real problems kids face in their lives, rather than resorting to the metaphorical adventures that a lot of storytelling for kids seems to rely on. Author Miller doesn't see any reason to NEED to exaggerate the problems kids face because to kids they are as real and as meaningful as they feel and above all this book's writing excels at this point. Beyond the script, the art is perfectly balanced for the smaller scale of book, with easy-reading pastel colors and clearly defined linework, with notable moments of visual detail baked into the pages that adds a real artistic texture to the book, like a panel purely inserted to show the stars on Olive's wall are glow-in-the-dark decals. I may be a couple of decades (and children) shy of being able to honestly say what a kid would think of this book, but as a fan of the medium regardless of target demographic, 'Click' is a confident, gentle, and worthwhile title that takes kids seriously without feeling overly serious.

I purchased a copy of this book for my cousins (ages 8 & 10) and they both loved it! They tell me they are both anxiously anticipating the next book in the series, “Camp”.As a longtime fan of Kayla Miller's independent comics, it was exciting to see their unique perspective applied to content for young audiences. It was refreshing to read a story about a character like Olive who doesn’t "fit in" but isn't explicitly ostracized as a social pariah—Olive HAS friends, she just doesn't have "best" friends. Even though the story centers on a character who feels like she doesn't know where she belongs, this feeling is universal. Everyone has felt like this at some point in their life, ESPECIALLY in middle school.I love the pacing of this book, particularly the way moments are allowed to breathe. Some of my favorite parts of the book are scenes with minimal dialog where the story is carried forward based on the characters' expressions and the setting. Each environment is illustrated with personality and attention to detail, helping readers become invested in Olive's world and problems. The dynamics between Olive's classmates and the complicated relationship between Olive's pragmatic mother and the more "oddball" Aunt Molly, leave me wanting to know more about these characters. Which is good, because more is on the way!I highly recommend you share "Click" with the young readers in your life.

Do you like comic books / graphic novels? Original, relatable characters? Story lines that are both entertaining, and meaningful? Buy this book. Olive, her family, and her friends are from all across the spectrum of life - this book is a great reminder about how sometimes we all feel like we don't have a place - until we finally discover it with the help of family and friends. The original artwork (and self-created font!) is amazing, and a great addition to any library. Can't wait until her next book releases!

I bought this to help my 10yr old goddaughter develop a love a reading! I picked the perfect book. She loved and wants more. Her enthusiasm for reading has changed dramatically. Great read!

This is a wonderful book with an invaluable lesson for today's children. One of my favorite new tools for a parent or grandparent, hoping to offer positive and retainable development assistance to a elementary school level child.

This book is amazing, has a great story and the drawings are phenomenal however a little short for me since i finished it in 45 minutes. Maybe not something u would want if ur looking for something long to read, but its just my opinion maybe im just a fast reader. Anyway awesome book!

Great story so far. But pages 65-80 are missing, with pages 49-64 repeating instead. Hope I can exchange for a correctly printed copy so my daughter can keep enjoying the story!

I liked this book and I will recommend it.The thing that I really did not like is that we should read how Olive present.

This book "Racquetball" by P.E. Allsen is part if the Sport and Fitness Series of Brown & Benchmark Publishers. As with other books in the series, it pretty much covers everything you want to know about the sport. It covers history, rules, procedures, strategies, etc. There are monochrome pictures of how to stand and move. Along with this are several diagrams of angles best for different types of serves. The book covers rules of different groups and how to score.A very important but overlooked part of the sport is warming up and stretching exercises. They are covered in this book also. The only things lacking from the book are the strength and endurance drills that do not use the ball its self. There is so much information in this 116-page book that it can make your racquet spin. This book is a must if you are even halfway serious.

One River, Many Wells: Wisdom Springing from Global Faiths, by Matthew Fox

Amazon.com Review

Who but Matthew Fox--former Dominican priest, author of countless influential books such as Original Blessing and The Reinvention of Work, silenced by the Vatican for his controversial statements about creation spirituality, and now an Episcopal priest--would combine rave dances with a religious mass? And who else would now attempt such a distillation of the world's religions as this book brings us? Combining writings from a multitude of spiritual traditions, Fox here puts into practice the idea of deep ecumenism that he has been exploring in a series of books going back to The Coming of the Cosmic Christ in 1989. To accomplish this task, Fox focuses on four categories of spiritual inquiry that he sees running like a river through all spiritual traditions: how we relate to creation, to divinity, to ourselves (this includes topics such as meditation, art, ritual, sexuality), and, finally, how we relate to the future, a section that explores issues of service and compassion, justice and spiritual warriorhood. He then concludes with "18 New Myths and Visions" that summarize his central message. Simplicity and clarity are the goals of this book. To achieve this Fox weaves his own brief commentary through a series of quotations drawn from a myriad of traditions. While it may be faulted by some for this method of making easy connections between traditions, the book serves its purpose as a kind of primer for deep ecumenism. It will be especially useful for those new to such ideas, and to those who might otherwise never meet Hildegard of Bingen and Julian of Norwich, Hafiz, and the Sufi Ibn Arabi--not to mention Thomas Aquinas, physicist Werner Heisenberg, and geologian Thomas Berry--all sharing each other's company. --Doug Thorpe

From Publishers Weekly

Fox, who broke from his Roman Catholic roots with his earlier books The Coming of the Cosmic Christ and Creation Spirituality, presents quotations from various faith traditions to introduce what he believes are the universals of every faith. The title comes from Fox's metaphor that every religious tradition is a different well that descends to a single subterranean river of spirituality. This is scarcely an original idea, but Fox has been one of its greatest popularizers, in the company of such illuminati as John Dominic Crossan and the scholars of the Jesus Seminar. Using the approach he has named "Deep Ecumenism," Fox writes about four universal areas of spirituality (relating to creation, relating to the divine, relating to ourselves and relating to the future), integrating quotations from the sacred writings and stories of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, folk religions and other traditions. Many of the selected quotations are set off by special margins, while others occur in boldface type in Fox's own running text. Concluding with "Eighteen Myths for Remythologizing our Species"Aranging from the unsurprising insight that all traditions can learn from each other to the intriguing idea that sexuality is sacredAFox continues to be an articulate presenter of the trends that he helped put in motion. If his ideas no longer seem innovative, that only credit his success as an apostle of self-made spirituality. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

One River, Many Wells. First of all, it is a truly inspired and wonderful title, and the title represents the content well. The book beautifully shares how the Infinite Lord God Almighty is not limited by any "box" someone (or some groups) might attempt to enclose Almighty Divine God, The Holy Spirit in. Diving into its contents some persons who may have sort of boxed-in their own mind, heart, spirit, and soul might be inspirited to open their hearts and allow the full infinite Grace of God flow in and THROUGH them. This of course would in turn fill them and free them to be fully used-of-God in loving service of who-ever they may come across in life.Clearly this is a beautiful and divine "putting of pen to paper" for us Interfaith Ministers and Chaplains. However, even those who may be dogmatic in thought and nature, judgmental/critical, and/or may take their own respective faith's Teachings and Scripture as black-and-white in-a-square-box literal, can have their eyes and hearts begin to open and layers of crusty-scales begin to fall.Sincerely searching the heart, surrendering in loving-service and prayer, in silent contemplation, and perhaps reflecting with open-hearted trusted fellow-beings, one may begin to see and understand that the basis, the central core, of All Faiths is Pure Selfless Love, Agape' Love, Unconditional Love... selfless Loving Service shall then unfold quite organically and naturally in the heart, mind, soul, intentions, thoughts, words, deeds, and actions of such-a-one. I heartily recommend it to one and all.

Good conglomeration of other authors and poets and their mystic, cosmic views, but I never really got to know Matthew Fox's personal views as a Catholic priest turned Episcopalian. As a Catholic, that was important to me.

This book has been an eyeopener for me. As a person living within a interfaith community I felt very open minded and somewhat educated about the different religions overall. I have been surprised at learning so many different and important ideas and view points concerning our major religions and the important individuals connected to them. Feel like a lot of my questions have been answered in a world view way.

I love the way it is formatted, with quotes from the mouths of those who practice particular faith traditions. Loove the inclusiveness.

Fascinating book, so many things I didn't know.

I enjoyed this enormously - just as much as his earlier books, "The Coming of the Cosmic Christ" and "Original Blessings."

This book has been a companion to me for daily meditation. The compilation of sacred truths from global religions is one of the hallmark of the author's presentation.

Outstanding book regarding the future of humankind as well as all creation.

The Kalevala is a great body of mythology and folklore that is vital to understanding Finland, and Finnish national identity. In fact, it might not be going too far to say that the Kalevala cycle *is* Finland, in so much as a culture's founding stories can be said to "make" the culture. Aside from the Kalevala's importance in historical and cultural terms, however, this is a great collection of stories that will enchant and delight anyone who likes to meet interesting, larger-than-life characters and see them put in interesting situations. This Oxford World's Classics edition of The Kalevala benefits from a foreword by Albert B. Lord of Harvard University and an introduction by translator Keith Bosley. Both the foreword and the introduction do a very fine job of setting The Kalevala in its historical context, and particularly of explaining the Herculean labor that Finnish folklorist Elias Lönnrot performed in traveling throughout the Russo-Finnish border region of Karelia and recording the oral poetry he found among the Karelians.Yet one goes to The Kalevala not for forewords or introductions, but rather for the poetry itself, and the epic story it tells. The main characters of The Kalevala have that mythic, heroic quality, and it is interesting to wonder about the characters as we meet them in this poetic cycles. Were they originally gods of a polytheistic, pre-Christian religious cycle, and are the poem's references to one god, an Almighty Creator, a way by which the Karelians held on to the old stories under the pressure of adopting a new religion? Were the main characters of these stories originally eminent Karelians of ancient times, whose stories metamorphosed over time into tales of mythic heroes? Or do the stories come from some other source or cause, one that is too far removed in time from us for us to have a chance of discovering it?Whatever the case may be, the characters are vivid, and so are their stories. The elderly Väinämöinen is a great singer who can work magic through the power of his songs; but he is unlucky in love, and he laments that he should have married young (advice that might have been taken seriously by the rural residents of old Karelia, where early marriage might lead to the birth of more children who could help on the farm). The smith Ilmarinen is hard-working and preternaturally skilled at his craft; as the Norse thunder-god Thór was a hammer-wielder with whom working-class Vikings could identify, so Ilmarinen is a hero for the working-day. He is the man who forged the Sampo, a mystical device that is never described very clearly, but brings prosperity to its owner. You grind the Sampo, and it makes you wealthy. I suppose that is all we really need to know. The Sampo is a plot device, a catalyst - the MacGuffin of The Kalevala.Very different from Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen is the Kalevala cycle's third main character, the mischievous Lemminkäinen. On some levels, Lemminkäinen is a trickster-figure like Loki from Norse mythology; selfish and forever in search of gratification, "wanton Lemminkäinen" has a habit of seducing all the young women of a village, and then skipping out just a few steps ahead of a whole village-full of angry fathers and husbands and boyfriends and brothers. Yet his story takes a number of interesting and unexpected directions that the Vikings of pre-Christian times would never have expected to see from Loki. Rune 14, "Elk, Horse, Swan," shows Lemminkäinen journeying into the underworld in search of the swan of Tuonela (a story later adapted into a musical tone poem by Jan Sibelius); he is killed by a blind herdsman whom he had wronged (in a manner somewhat analogous to the way the compassionate god Baldr from Norse mythology is killed, albeit unintentionally, by the blind god Höðr) and torn to pieces. Rune 15, "Resurrection," shows Lemminkäinen's long-suffering mother journeying to the underworld, reconstructing her son's mangled body, and bringing him back to life - a story that invites parallels with the story of Isis and Osiris from Egyptian mythology. One of my favorite tales from the poem is Rune 17, "Inside the Giant," wherein Väinämöinen, seeking songs that he can use to wield magical power, goes inside the mouth of the giant Antero Vipunen, makes his way down to the giant's belly, and gives the giant no end of gastrointestinal discomfort until Antero Vipunen "opened his word-chest/and flung wide his box of tales" (p. 213), providing Väinämöinen with powerful spells that Väinämöinen will henceforth be able to sing when they are needed. In this story, one senses echoes of the various descents-into-the-abyss that one reads of in different mythological traditions - e.g., Odysseus and Aeneas making their respective descents to the Greco-Roman underworld, in order that they may bring back from the land of the dead the information that they need in order to fulfill their respective quests - as well as the story of Jonah's swallowing by the great fish in the Old Testament. Aside from the mythographic qualities and storytelling power of "Inside the Giant," I just find "Antero Vipunen" to be an incredibly awesome name.Another of the most important characters in the Kalevala is Kullervo. The child of one of two families involved in a feud, Kullervo is sent away from his family, made a serf of Ilmarinen, and treated cruelly by Ilmarinen's wife. Kullervo curses Ilmarinen's wife - "[Y]ou too will weep yet --/you'll weep your milch cows" (p. 462) - and transforms her herd of cows, which he had been sent to herd, into bears, instructing them, "Rip the mistress's/thigh, bite half her calf/when she comes to look/and crouches to milk!" (p. 463). Once his magic has brought about the death of Ilmarinen's wife, Kullervo returns home and finds his family, but then leaves them, determined to revenge himself on the family of Untamo, the family that has wronged him. He meets a girl on the road and has his way with her, but with tragic consequences (think Oedipus). And he does get his revenge; but as with those Shakespearean characters who dedicate themselves to revenge, Kullervo destroys himself even as he works the destruction of his enemies. These runes make for profoundly disheartening reading.A highlight of the Kalevala, for me, was the series of runes starting with Rune 39, "Sailing to Northland." In these runes, the three main characters - Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen, and Lemminkäinen - join forces and sail north in search of the Sampo, the mystical prosperity-bringing device forged by Ilmarinen but then taken away to the North by the witch Louhi. (I can't help wondering if such elements of the myth point back to old economic rivalries between the Finnish Karelians on the one hand and the Sami people of Sapmi, or Lapps of Lapland, on the other.) The three make their way successfully to Northland and retrieve the Sampo, but Louhi transforms herself into a bird-monster and pursues them: "[N]ow the North's dame is coming/the wondrous bird glides along --/as for shoulders, like a hawk/a wyvern as for body!" (p. 567). A great battle ensues, and the editors of this edition wisely made Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela's 1896 painting "Defending the Sampo" the book's front cover illustration (check out Kallela's other Kalevala paintings if you're an admirer of the stories). I won't tell you what happens to the Sampo - no spoiler alert needed here - but I will say that we'd all better plan to keep working for a living; none of us is likely to find the Sampo and grind his or her way to easy money. In modern Finland, the Kalevala is a living force, a benchmark of Finnish national identity and cultural pride. You never know when you'll turn a corner in Helsinki and find a statue of Väinämöinen singing, or Ilmarinen wielding his hammer. One of the best restaurants in the city, close to the waterfront, is named Aino, for the young maiden who threw herself into the sea in order to avoid marrying the elderly Väinämöinen, and in the process became the first mermaid. But you don't have to travel to Finland to appreciate the mythic power and beauty of The Kalevala. It is a great collection of stories, pure and simple, and this translation conveys well the power and beauty of the stories.

This review is in two parts:THE TRANSLATION: When it comes to reading ancient literature there are often numerous versions and translations. Unless a story is REALLY good, I only want to read it once. So it only makes sense that one should want to read the best version/translation available.Thankfully, the Keith Bosley translation of The Kalevala is the most reader-friendly, very much like Seamus Heaney's translation of "Beowulf".The Kalevala does not rhyme, although there are a few instances of alliteration scattered throughout. Each line is usually a handful of words comprising an even larger sentence, but it's done in a tasteful way so that you won't feel like you're reading a James Joyce run-on sentence like in "Ulysses".THE EPIC:The Kalevala bounces around telling tales of several major characters, which is fortunate, considering the length of the work. Without giving anything away, the characters do things like get married, steal precious relics, sing magical songs, go to war and build many more precious relics. There are lots of good "Chapters" in The Kalevala and I was surprised that a few of my favorites had little or no action in them (according to a guy's definition of action, at least). One of which was the marriage sequence of Chapters 21-24. If you've ever heard the advice, "Don't get married", this is probably one of the sources where such advice comes from.It is also noteworthy how much influence The Kalevala has had on Fantasy and Metal. If I remember correctly, Tolkien's "Silmarillion" starts off with beings singing things into existence, much like the characters in The Kalevala do.The Finnish metal band "Ensiferum" has songs that are inspired straight from The Kalevala, such as "Old Man" which refers to Vainamoinen. There are many other bands in the folk metal genre, that, although they don't specifically cite The Kalevala as an inspiration they clearly have songs that are similar to The Kalevala's oral tradition. Some examples (in my opinion) would be Korpiklaani (Finnish), Metsatoell and Raud Ants (Estonian).Overall, I liked The Kalevala much more than I thought I would, given its length and I have to admit: I found it more interesting than Beowulf.

Translation:I started the Kalevala by reading the free public domain translation available on Kindle, and quickly found myself losing motivation to read it. This version is much more readable, and is overall a good translation.I don't know Finnish, but I do have some doubts about the translation. The issue of using "wench" has been brought up, but my bigger concern is the inconsistency in translating proper nouns. Sometimes, these are translated, and other times left untranslated. The -la suffix has been translated as -land in some places, but not others (Kalevala and Tuonela, but Vaino-land and Northland). Some names are translated into English where it would seem better to leave them as Finnish names (although this is useful with the bear's epithet, translated as "Beastie"). This works well for the epithets of Lemminkainen (e.g. Far-Mind instead of Kaukomieli), but with true names, it seems odd.Content:While this is still certainly an epic, don't expect it to fit your expectations of what the epic tradition is meant to be. There are some action-packed episodes in it, but it has just as many depictions of day-to-day life. Since it is cobbled together from various sources, there isn't necessarily an over-arching narrative. It's closer to the Metamorphoses than the Aeneid or Odyssey in its structure, but still very interesting to the philologist or historian.
