If you're from Chattanooga, TN, you need to read this book!!!!

Although this purchase was used, the book is fantastic! The condition was as listed, but that didn't matter because of the rich history that is written within. If you're from Tennessee, this is definitely a book to read!

This book covers so many facets of Chattanooga's history; the native americans, and the the explorers, and families that settled the area now called Chattanooga. The author interviewed many of the prominent figures of Chattanooga. Not just the wealthy families and old timers but also those that influence and contribute to the present-day politics and culture. You don't have to be a Chattanoogan to enjoy the contents of this book.The author's style takes a bit of getting used to. He includes his experiences along his journey for knowledge, not just an account of the facts and history. So the book could have been condensed a bit and made it a shorter read but that would have left out his coincidental meetings with local Chattanoogans, which can be fascinating at times.

If you love Chattanooga, you need to read this book about it’s incredible history. I am actually only a fourth of the way through, but I can’t put it down. Came here looking to buy some gift copies.

I loved reading this book. As someone who grew up in Chattanooga hearing the storied family names and places that float around local conversations, it was interesting to learn the history behind them.

Dean Arnold has written the new standard on Chattanooga history. Chattanooga has an interesting history as it has been at the center of several key events in our nation's history: The Trail of Tears, the turning point of the Civil War, the beginning of the end of Christian missions to the American Indians. Chattanooga is arguably the most religious city in the United States with a great deal of philanthropy and Christian organizations. It is also a city that often runs like a small town because of the small number of extremely prominent, and surprisingly beneficent, families which have controlled much of the city's direction.Arnold has produced a beautifully lavish book with many photos and illustrations (pity there's no picture yet, this is a nice cloth book). It's a fun read if you are interested in what Chattanooga is all about and how it got there. If you want to know Chattanooga, buy this book.

I was looking forward to reading this book about Chattanooga and its' "gentry" but was terribly disappointed. Between misspelled words, repetitive text (I honestly think he used copy and paste on several paragraphs in different chapters) and the most confusing organization imaginable, it was a real let-down.He spent several pages on street preachers, but not one word about magnet schools. Touting the "Big Three" private schools took up a lot of space, (including extensive reporting on cancelling a football game to prevent graffiti, which I don't get) but the only reference to the Public Education Foundation and Steve Prigozy was simply that they existed. Not to cover the conception, growth and success of the many magnet schools which have changed the face and quality of public education in Chattanooga is a disgrace.Besides whining that he did not get an interview with Jack Lupton, the only thing of substance the author shared was that the founders of our fair city were Presbyterian. The chapter on the history of the name of the town was confusing and inconclusive. What tripe! This was a promising effort, but a dismal failure. Don't bother to buy this book. If you absolutely have to read it, get it from the library and donate the money you would have spent on it to support our local lending institutions

Sure the author is a narcissist, taking long tangents to discuss his courage for writing this book, or often citing himself as proof for various claims. Yet for those interested in the history of Chattanooga and in particular how the present has been determined by the past, well, there's no more compelling read on the subject. It's downright scandalous at times, as if you'd discovered the private diary of the City.

But once I got used to the format, I'll have to say that it added to the experience. I bought this collection to listen to while I have to travel. The stories are done very well and the miles flew by. These are the first audio books I have tried, but they will not be my last. well worth the money.

Immense fun listening to all of the stars voices on these discs. Read a lot of Louis L'Amour books as a kid and was enthralled listening to them as we drove on trip back east earlier this year. Would highly recommend to any fan of Louis L'Amour.

Great colorful stories of the old west written by Louis L'AMOUR narrated by Willie Nelson, a return to great old fashion story telling. Willie is a natural born story teller and Louis is probably the best author of events and stories of the old west.

Been a fan of the books since I was a kid. Never been a fan of reading but they made us read books in school so I grew to love these classic westerns by Louis L'Amour. Received this audio collection as a gift and am enjoying listening to it on my computer while I perform other tasks. Really enjoying the voice acting and narration. Great gift for yourself or anyone that is a fan of Louis L'Amour or westerns!

If you enjoy the tales of the old West written by Louis L'Amour, you'ell enjoy the way Willie Nelson reads those tales. Willie's unique style puts you in the middle of the action. You can almost smell, taste and hear everything going on as if you were there. "Riding for the Brand" is my favorite story and with the addition of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson playing the parts of story make the whole thing come alive...you will enjoy this series of books on CD...especially as dramatized by Willie Nelson and his guitar.

Ha! I LOVE this! I love hearing all the different voices... Kristofferson and Willie are the best! Just what I needed!!!

I have had the honor of meeting Prof. Dekle twice and I have been a knockout prosecutor ever since. If you want to know how to be a prosecutor you need this book. Prior to reading this book I was floundering in my efforts to be a good prosecutor. After reading this a book I started this year off with two the major crimes convictions. Prior to the book I really did not know that I kinew nothing about prosectuing. His three part method of prosecuting works. I used it in my previously mentioned trials and found that I had not only direction for my case but was able to better show the defendant's guilt. Most importantly, Prof Dekle is "from these parts" and can teach you how to connect with the jury. Although I wish he were a prfoessor at the time I attended law school, his book reveals God given wisdom for a time when defense lawyers are stopping at nothing to "get the guy off." GET THIS BOOK if you want success as a prosecutor.

Thank you Mr Dekle. Your book is full of good advice.

I bought it as a gift for some one else. I can not accurately give a rating for the book

I am an adjunct Trial Advocacy professor at S.M.U. and believe that this book superbly fills the void in trial literature for prosecutors. The author, a legal skills professor at the University of Florida, has written a highly relevant and readable text for any prosecutor--both new or experienced--who wants to excel in the courtroom. From the first page, it is clear that Dekle brings to the reader insights and lessons learned not only from his teaching experience but his years of being a long time prosecutor prior to his current job. The book covers the basics of trial skills but also focuses on the particular needs of prosecutors such as how to build helpful relationships with law enforcement, strategies for plea bargaining, how to decide whether to indict a case or not, criminal discovery, and ethics.Moreover, as a former prosecutor in Washington, D.C., I found the examples (both from real cases and hypotheticals) to be very relevant and memorable. It is also refreshing to see a textbook that combines a discussion of the history of trial practice with modern techniques. Finally, the table of contents makes it very easy for any prosecutor to find help in an emergency during trial or to study a particular topic in depth when time permits.

This book doesn't have a "story" to tell in any sense of the word. It is basically a play-by-play telling of what Lulu does when she goes to school: she makes her lunch, she meets her teacher, they practice flying on their brooms, she meets a girl she doesn't like, she gets lizard pocks and so does the other girl, they count each other's pocks. The End.It is the equivalent of me writing a book about what I did at work: I went to work, said hi to my co-workers, one of them made me laugh at his joke, typed some things into the computer, ate lunch, had a meeting, went home. The End.Not only did I find it boring, so did my child. If you want to motivate your child to read, they need to try and read a story that makes them want to turn the page. This book will make your child's eyes glaze over after the first two pages.

Super cute illustrations and the story hooked my 5-year old who loved halloween stuff. Right after we were done, she was drawing scenes from the book! The story was also a good introduction to showing her life in a new school, where there are different kids, and some mean ones. This book was a nice surprise and wish there were more Lulu stories.

Super cute, funny book. My daughter was less into it than I was, but that's because she thinks she's grown and doesn't like to read. Great, relatable book. Would recommend for 5-6 year old girls.

My 6yo daughter picked out this book when she earned a gift certificate to amazon. As a 1st grader, she is just learning to read on her own and this book's interesting plot combined with sight words and repetitive non-sight words make it a wonderful read. She has read this story many times and used it for one of her book reports for school. She enjoys reading it over and over - she's read it to me three times in the last two weeks and will read it to her younger siblings for as long as they will sit still. She keeps it with her during afternoon "quiet times". She says, "it is fun to read and I like how the witches act out their part."

Book has beautiful illustrations, but I was very surprised by one of the pages. See attached pic. I’mnot ready to explain gay marriage to my 6 year old.

I gave this book to my grandchildren because I am a quilter, and love to bestow my quilts on those I love. I understand it's meaning and message, and hate to give it a bad review, but be warned. My grandchildren were in tears after the 2nd Grandma died. Not for sensitive children who love their grandmas.

The original version of this book is wonderful. It was a favorite read aloud story of my elementary students and myself for years. When I ordered copies of the 25th edition for my grandchildren I was not aware that the original was changed. I will not read this version to my grandchildren because of the ending.

my daughter in law who is having a baby is Jewish. i made a quilt for the baby and i tucked this book in with it. it was perfect accompaniment. the story is beautifully told...about family, traditions, and the circle of life. the quilt was made with clothing from the family members "basket of clothes". the quilt is then handed down through the generations...becoming a part of the important celebrations...from wedding canopies, to tablecloths for the sabbath dinner, to wrapping a new baby within it's love. the book was poignant...and i hope my quilt will be passed down through the generations as well as it surrounds her with love throughout the years..

This book inspired me to create a quilt for a friend's daughter whose wedding is in January. I have asked the members of her family and friends to contribute to the quilt and I have a friend who is a quilter. So, yes, I enjoyed this sweet little book.

Patricia Polacco is one of the greatest storytellers of our generation. She has put down snippets of not only her life, but of her ancestors, into delightful stories that transcends all age groups. THE KEEPING QUILT is about Polacco's Great-Grandmother Anna, who immigrated to New York City. The only two things that she still owned from her native Russia were her dress and a babushka. Anna's mother eventually takes parts of her dress and babushka along with old clothes belonging to other relatives and makes a quilt that will remind everyone of their homeland. This quilt serves as a source of comfort and memories for future generations. This is another book that I bought my daughter for her birthday. She will read this book to her second graders perhaps inspiring a new generation to write down the memories of the past.

The book was in good condition. The story is good, too. There four quilters in our family. My mother's quilts had stories in them. So I love the book.
