I have been reading westerns for 55 years and I will be reading more of Mr Robertson. I have found a new western author. I have also found a new western character who I want to follow in his travels West. Major Joshua Logan is a man who is as big,brave, and relentless as I have ever read about. I finished the novel in 5 hrs and only put it down to eat supper Great story line and very good character development. The story had many twists and turns and some great subplots that just surprised me ( like the Kickapoos). I will be going right to The Savage Valley (book 2) next. Mr Robertson, I hope to see book 3 soon!
Nice read. Characterization was excellent. You really like the main characters, really hate the antagonists and enjoy the bit players. The plot is formulaic Western, which is fine with me, and moves along toward a predictable, but satisfying end. The dialogue is a little sappy. The constant exchange of compliments and platitudes gets old. The players like and respect each other. We get it. There are some editing errors that are a little distracting: Will Penny appears for a moment and you're thinking 'What?', but he becomes Scott again shortly thereafter. Overall, I recommend the book to Western novel fans.
This fast moving story is as exciting as any western I have had the opportunity to follow, and I have been fortunate enough to read a passel of outstanding quality books. This is definitely a family-friendly, and very heartwarming,d continuous story that is very descriptive, with the many accomplishments of Josh, Pat, Bill, Fianna, and the entire crew of the Nance ranch community! The camaraderie of this special group of people created a setting of continuously ongoing adventures that satisfies any true lover of great western storytelling! The storylines successfully depicts what I perceived as true western folklore, and the selection of characters certainly was impressive in their appropriately roles. There is never a dull, or non interesting episode from beginning to end. An outstanding display of true western adventures by an exceptionally talented author, who did an amazing job once again! Definitely recommend this compassionate, and heartwarming masterpiece to anyone, regardless of your reading preference. This all encompassing detailed story will definitely appease anyone's expectations, and the ending will certainly prepare you for the next exciting story of the Logan family!
I've been a Louis L'Amour fan since I discovered his books in my high school library. This is the first western author that I have read that I enjoyed near as much as L'Amour. The plot was solid. The story moved at a good pace. I was entertained thoroughly by the book. I'll be reading more. In fact, I've already started the next one.
Well-written, while reminiscent in many ways of Louis L'amour, the pacing and the style are different, that is NOT a criticism, merely an observation.In all the author's books he follows through with a chapter or 'epilogue' to complete the story of the lives involved, this provides a sense of closing to this reader that is much appreciated.Good clean story, lots of action, all of Mr. Robertson's books can be described in this way.
Because my reading about the west has bee pretty limited, mainly to mostly to Louis L'amour; there is a tendency to compare other books to his, and leading characters to Tell Sackett. In this book, I think Donald Robertson and Josh Logan fared quite well. The story grabbed me right at the beginning, the code of honor and ethics that Logan lived by made me want to read more, and the relationship with his horse was just great. If you are not familiar with Robertson, I would suggest you give this book a try. I will say that his short story, "The Old Ranger", hooked me, and this story brought me in. Even the 2 chapter preview about Callum Logan, MAKE me want to buy the next one and read it!
Such a good book! No sex or profanity! I love westerns, and this is very well written. I can't wait to read the second book in the series, Savage Valley! Think I'll go start it tonight.
