The author beautifully narrates to laypersons how broken symmetry, i.e., asymmetry born from symmetry is important in the natural world for the existence of life, molecules, atoms and elementary particles. The riddle of the symmetry associated with the last of these items when the universe was created is yet to be solved in the near future. At the end of the book, the reader will be surprised to learn that Pasteur anticipated the importance of asymmetry in 1860. In an early chapter the author writes about the moderately well-known teaser "Why do mirrors reverse left and right but not top and bottom?" His answer to this is astonishingly simple. However, he should have been careful to give a more educational answer that includes the explanation for the reversal of the left- and right-handedness in mirrors, because he describes about "mirror asymmetric" left-handed and right-handed molecules, right-handedness of DNA and left-handedness of "the mirror DNA," etc. in a later chapter. [The latest academic articles on the mirror reversal problem can be found in M. C. Corballis, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review Vol. 7, No. 1, pp. 163-169 (2000) and T. Tabata and S. Okuda, ibid. pp. 170-173 (2000).] This book would also be interesting for scientists to learn how they can talk well about scientific topics to laypersons. It would have been much better for the book to include a bibliography for citations and further reading.

This book has been around for a while and has, I am sure, accumulated a following. Still it needs a wider audience. Everything that lives, I am convinced exists because of an asymmetry, however slight, with itself or its environment. Symmetry seems to be the compelling idea that we want to pursue. Frank Close takes us on a path we to often discount or deny.

The book is extremely well written, fascinating, and easy to read. But the best part is the little errata sheet that comes with the book that may make it a collector's item. There is a drawing in the book of the Tullieries Garden in Paris meant to show the symmetry humans wish to achieve. The drawing has an error that breaks the symmetry, just like the one headless Lucifer statue in the Garden broke the symmetry when the author visited it, giving him a starting point for this book. The errata sheet attempts to restore the symmetry with a new drawing, but the irony has already made its point; human attempts at symmetry are doomed to fail in an asymmetric universe.

I think this is the best book which Frank Close has written. It explains the consequences of asymmetries in nature and how the underlying symmetries are broken. I learnt quite a bit as to how it operates in biological systems. I thoroughly recommend it.

One of the best science books I have ever read; it should be required reading for anyone taking either a physics or chemistry class in high school or college. Its clarity and vision compels you to think out of the box about serious contemporary science issues.

I think this was a great book, although it seemed to dwell mostly on anti-particles. It was easy to read and understand by the average person with an interest in astro physics. It doesn't boggle down one's mind with the math. I think it's a book that everyone with an interest in this field should read. I'm glad I read it.

While very interesting, be aware that in spite of some not very deep lip service otherwise, this book is about asymmetry in chemistry and physics, not in biology.

Recently, I started attending a mom's group at a local church and one day they were giving away some different Christian books. "Jesus Calling" by Sarah Young was one of the books they were giving away and unfortunately, I wasn't a lucky winner of it but I decided to purchase it anyway because my friends told me good things about it and I was very interested in it. I ended up purchasing DaySpring Sarah Young's Jesus Calling, DayBrightener Perpetual Flip Calendar, 366 Days of Scripture (75621) by accident but am giving it to my mom so I bought this hardcover version for myself.Sarah Young and her husband are missionaries who spent years in Japan and Australia sharing the love of Jesus with others. During her time spent teaching others about Christ, she kept a journal and wrote down thoughts and words she felt coming from Jesus as well as Bible verses that spoke to her. It was through this writing that "Jesus Calling" came about and she was able to turn it into a devotional for everyone to use.The devotions included in this book are written from the perspective of Jesus speaking to the reader. There is one page for each day of the year, including February 29th. Each page contains a couple of paragraphs with devotions for that day and some Bible verses pertaining to that day's devotion which you can look up in your Bible. She has also included some Scripture references within the devotions that are indicated in italics. This book measures 4 1/4 inches by 6 1/4 inches by 1 inch and is a nice hardcover. It contains 384 glossy pages, including some introductory pages which I recommend reading. There is also an attached ribbon bookmark so you can easily mark your spot. Unless indicated, the Scripture references are taken from the New International Version of the Holy Bible.I love Jesus Calling and am so glad I was introduced to it! Most of the time I find myself reaching for it when I'm having a rough day and it helps me to relax and feel peaceful. I strive to read it everyday, whether I'm having a good or bad day, because the words in this book make me feel more positive no matter what. Since each page only takes about a minute to read, this book would be great to read in the morning while enjoying a cup of coffee and a few minutes of solitude, since many of us lead busy lives. I have friends who love these books as well and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase these as gifts for anyone who I think would enjoy them. If you, or someone you know, are looking for a daily devotional, I highly recommend this one. I also purchased Jesus Always: Embracing Joy in His Presence and Jesus Today: Experience Hope Through His Presence because I love these devotionals. I love the devotions in it and feel it is well-worth the money to spend on it!

When a friend told me about this book and that it was such an inspiration to her, I had my doubts. How could any author know what Jesus had to say to us? Well, I gave it a try. With the accompanying scripture, Sarah was surely led by the Holy Spirit when writing this book. I feel that God has given me great growth through the words He gave her that were just for me. I could write a book telling how God has gone before me with the subtitle I have given this book. My life was saved from a death by hypothermia because the words from Jesus that morning told me that He is my strength. I am 73 years old and have mobility issues.. One of our horses got out of the pasture and I thought I could get her back to the barn. We had 12 inches of snow during the night, but she was just outside the door, so I slipped my bare feet into a pair of shoes, grabbed a lightweight jacket, a lead rope, two canes and a carrot. She munched on the carrot as I attempted to get the rope on her. Well, she figured out what I was doing, grabbed the carrrot and ran for the corn field and I was sure I could catch up with her and coax her back to the barn. I stumbled and fell. My canes just slipped on the snow and I couldn't get up. I started crawling and as I tired, belly crawling to a house that was closer than mine. I was getting so tired, I just wanted to lay my head down and rest for a bit. As I layed my head down, I heard a voice telling me not to lay my head down, not to close my eyes, just look for the next spot you're going to. You have the strength. Every time I wanted to lay my head down, I heard the same voice and felt revived enough to go on. I made it to the other house; my neighbor called 911 and medical help arrived. Even though I was in shock and my temperature was just below 95 degrees, I was totally lucid. I give thanks to God for urging me on. At my age,He must still have things for me to do in His service. My only injury was slightly bruised kidneys from the fall that healed quickly without any complications. My husband came to emergency and was able to take me home. Before we left for the hospital, the horse came to the ambulance and bumped her head on it until the sheriffs tried to catch her. She ran to the barn door and waited for them to open the door and let her into her stall. I had traveled between 1/4 and 1/2 a mile. This is just one example of how knowing that Jesus is calling and always with us, leading us into His will and keeping us safe, holding me with His right hand and keeping me in His everlasting arms.

I cannot say enough good about this book. It feeds my soul everyday. It gives the background of the author, which I loved. The scripture at the bottom of the page is already written out for you, you don't have to go searching unless you want to read it in a different version, which is good too. Or if you just WANT to look up the scripture. In the back is an index that shows you different subjects if you would like to study that way. For instance if you are feeling worried that day or fearful it shows which page and what scripture to look up. And best of all, it's like Jesus is right there in the room with you talking to you PERSONALLY.

This is much nicer than the original version and has the scriptures quoted instead of just the references. It also has more scriptures than the original. It is sturdy and has the look and feel of quality.

I don't like the way this author speaks in first person to represent God, when a lot of the statements are inspirational in nature and don't come directly from The Bible. For example, one of the entries says "I arrange the events of each day to form you into this preconceived pattern. My everlasting Love is at work in every event in your life. On some days your will and Mine flow smoothly together...." The only two scriptures quoted for this passage are Isiah 64:8 and Psalm 27:8....the author definitely filled in some blanks because those scriptures don't convey what she wrote. If she filled in the blanks from other bible verses, they should be quoted.

My all-time favorite daily devotional. I have told LOADS of people about this book and have given this book to a few of them. This year is my third year of reading it. I'm not new to deepening my spirituality; but this book certainly was a surprise in that area. It has profoundly affected me, enlarging my faith!

José L. Tadeo, PhD in chemistry, is a Full Research Professor at the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology in Madrid, Spain. He graduated in chemistry in June 1972 from the University of Valencia and began his research career at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology, Spanish Council for Scientific Research, in Valencia, investigating on natural components of plants with insecticide activity. In 1976, he was engaged in the research of analytical methodologies for the determination of pesticide residues in food, water, and soil at the Jealott’s Hill Research Station in UK. In 1977, Dr Tadeo was a research scientist at the Institute for Agricultural Research, in Valencia, where his work focused on the study of chemical composition of citrus fruits and the behavior of fungicides used during postharvest of fruits. In 1988, he became a senior researcher at the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology. During his stay at the Plant Protection Department, the main research lines were the analysis of herbicide residues and the study of their persistence and mobility in soil. Since 1998 he leads the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory at the Environment Department of the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology. His current research is the analysis of pesticides and other contaminants in food and environmental matrices and the evaluation of the exposure to biocides and existing chemicals. His expertise is documented by the publication of over 200 research papers, monographs, and book chapters on these topics, an H index of 36 and the supervision of 10 doctoral thesis. Dr Tadeo has been a member of national and international working groups for the evaluation of chemicals, and he is currently involved in the assessment of biocides at European and international level.

Beautiful book but has some glaring omissions/errors at least in the wildlife/mammals category. For example Mule deer and Blacktail deer are very different creatures, the blacktail is west of the Cascades and the mule deer, east. Mule deer have larger bodies and bigger racks/horns, and huge mule-like ears. Blacktail are smaller, have a very different type of rack/horns than a Mule deer, and have a smallish black tail. The two types WILL interbreed. Moose are not mentioned at all, and elk are not listed as Roosevelt, and Rocky Mountain elk. These type of elk are very different also - one is west of the Cascades (Roosevelt,) and the other east (Rocky Mountain.) They also differ in that the Roosevelt has a larger body and smaller rack/horns while the Rocky Mountain elk has a smaller body than the Roosevelts but bigger racks.There is also little mention of the mushrooms, and the berries that are edible.As this is the third Audubon book I have purchased I was expecting a very different type of book in the same format as the minerals and mushroom guides.

I meant to buy a book about birds of the PNW, this book is waaaay better, it covers everything from plants, avians, mammals, aquatic life and even the night sky! I absolutely love it!

This book is well made, good sized, and if a great material. It covers a good many species of common life that is likely to be seen, and it doesn't do a bad job of it.That being said, the plants are pretty poorly documented. Often times there's only a far off blurry picture and it would be difficult to tell what the thing was. Other times there is only a close up of a flower of a tree. Well trees aren't always flowering. I think it would be better to have a picture of the whole plant, and another close up of the leaves or whatever distinguishing characteristics there are.Secondly, this book is not good for insects. Only a few of the common insects are shown and many of the common ones are absent. In addition, I would appreciate the orders written in Latin with the English translation: "Diptera (fly order)" as opposed to just saying "fly order"Another gripe, and this is persnickety but none the less, in the snake section it has a "poisonous" section. Well snakes aren't poisonous so there should be none listed there. Some snakes have venom. No snakes have poison. Same with bees and wasps,Anyway. Overall, it isn't bad. Especially for those who do not know much of anything about biology, but for those looking for s more detailed or comprihensive guide, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Great for the traveler, this regional guide gives a broad, but fairly in-depth look at natural features of the Pacific Northwest.There's no need to carry around a separate tree, fish, bird, stone, etc. book if you have this for the region you plan to explore. I live in Oregon and carry this book around with me on hikes. Being from the East, I've learned a ton about Western plants just by browsing the book and reading the helpful regional specific geology/botany/natural information they have at the beginning and ends of this book.Sure, you won't necessarily be able to find every rare subspecies, but this is a comprehensive enough book that serves as a good pocket guide (back pocket or jacket pocket, that is, because this is a bit too large for pants pockets).

This book covers WA, OR, and CA and has details as well as colored pictures. It covers everything from plants, the night sky, sea animals, and land animals and birds in a small book. Obviously it can't cover everything but it has been a huge help as we learn about the world around us.

I live in an area that has so many different trees, flowers and plants that it is mid boggling. Each day I identify a couple with this book on my walks. There are still a lot of vegetation and trees that are not in this book, however. Nonetheless, I don't know of any better. It is easy to carry (not too heavy).

This is a small pocket book but with a lot of useful information. I recently moved to Seattle and this book has good information on the local flora and fauna. I use it mostly while birdwatching or when I come across a plant I would like to know more about. Hotel and eating recommendations are a good stating point, but the internet is more up to date. Get whatever version you like, if you are on a budget go for the previous edition
