Like most little girls I read the Little House on the Prairie series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I would guess I ready the Anne of Green Gables series every year when I was growing up. Sadly, it has been a few years since I have picked up Anne of Green Gables, I purchased the kindle versions of the books in anticipation of reading Sarah McCoy's, Marilla of Green Gables. McCoy's publishers have done an amazing job of marketing her newest book. I first saw advertisements over a year ago and pre-ordered the book the first chance I got.Marilla of Green Gables is McCoy's attempt at explaining why the character Marilla was the way Marilla was. Marilla, a person mysteriously hardened by life comes alive with the arrival of a young girl with a vast imagination managed to pull her out of her shell. Readers of the Montgomery's Anne series know that Marilla alludes to a love lost and regrets in conversations with Anne about Gilbert Blythe. Keeping in mind that this version of the story is not Lucy Maud Montgomery's telling, Sarah McCoy does Marilla's story justice. Early in the book I remembered that at some point in life Marilla loved, was loved, and lost love. Watching the relationship between John Blythe and Marilla develop it was hard not to feel a tightening in my chest with the knowledge that their love would end tragically. It was an interesting perspective, the loss of Marilla's mother, promises made on a death bed, and a loyalty to family, all of which made Marilla the woman she was when we first meet her in Anne of Green Gables.McCoy claims to have done extensive research on Montgomery, the Anne series, and Prince Edward Island in an effort to bring new life to old characters. I believe that Montgomery would feel honored by the story that was told.I am not ready yet to leave PEI and look forward to continuing my journey with Anne's arrival to Green Gables and a re-read of an old friend.Cover Design - 5.0The cover does a really great job of capturing Montgomery's Green Gables.Grammer - 5.0Beautifully edited. I am not familiar with Sarah McCoy as an author but this first introduction into her work brought me great pleasure.Plot - 4.0I did a Heather "no-no" and read some early reviews; prior to the book being released. People don't like change or things that are different. There were a lot of critics out there who feared that McCoy was treading on Montgomery's "turf". Now, I am all about originality and I feel that Hollywood continues to recycle old stories. I also believe that some mystery in a book's storyline allows the reader to use their own imagination. When reading the Anne of Green Gables series my heart always broke for Marilla and her love lost but I never really considered what could have caused her such heartache. Do I buy McCoy's versions of events? It's as much as a possibility as any and in this day in age when politics are causing so much division in our country it makes it a completely reasonable rationale that Marilla and John Blythe allowed heated beliefs to divide them. Marilla always was hard headed, Anne tames that, but she always spoke first and came to her senses later. It makes sense that speaking without thinking first plus her pride was Marilla's demise in love.Believability - NAI am not sure that this category applies to this book so I am going to leave it as NA.Ending - 5.0This book opens at the beginning of the Anne stories, before Anne arrives, and then with Marilla reminiscing about the past. Closure comes with the continuation of the series and Montgomery's telling of Anne's story.Price Value - 4.0I think the story was well written and well worth the price. I am all about the deal so doubt if you put this book on your wish list, in a couple of years the book with go on sale.Overall - 4.5I enjoyed this story. I don't usually get emotional over a book but for most of this story I had to try hard not to cry. Knowing the outcomes of the characters made it hard to root for the love story developing between Marilla and John. I think the additional story of the American Civil War and the Underground Railroad brings a depth to Marilla's character. Marilla could have easily sent Anne back to the orphanage. Anne certainly wasn't what they needed or what they wanted but if you believe that Marilla held a soft place in her heart for the rights of all people you can understand why she would not send a child back to such suffering.

McCoy is very creative when introducing young Marilla Cuthbert, before she became crusty Marilla of Green Gables. The author does an admirable job of introducing Marilla's parents and young Matthew. My favorite character was blustery Rachel, since McCoy kept her personality as LMM designed her. Parts of the story are hard to read: the passing of her mother, Matthew's heartbreak, and the John Blythe angle. The last part was rather clunky. It just didn't seem to fit with the flow from the rest of the narrative. The cover art is very inviting. Overall, fans of Anne will embrace young Marilla's story. Thanks to the publisher for sending a hard copy and digital format of the book.

Being a childhood fan of L.M. Montgomery's "Anne" books, I was curious to read this "prequel" by a different author. Overall, it did a good job of paying homage to the original series, while providing an interesting backstory to answer the questions I've always had about Marilla's youth. I enjoyed the little treats of continuity with "Anne of Green Gables", like seeing Marilla learn to make her famous wine, or the description of what would later become Anne's room, complete with explanations for the different items within.There are places where the characterization and plot feel forced, but I think this is partly due to the constraints placed on the author by the prequel format. We already know how Marilla's life turns out, and we know she has regrets about lost opportunities. This guarantees a certain unavoidable sadness to the story, but the author balanced that with warm and heartfelt depictions of the Cuthbert family, Avonlea, and the beauty of Prince Edward Island.

Anne of Green Gables has always been my favorite set of books. A orphan no one wanted but stole the hearts of Matthew and Marilla. Marilla always seemed distant and cold until Anne cracked her shell but what happened why were her and Matthew never married?This book shined a new light on Marilla and Matthew it was just magical. The story was well written and just made it feel like a prequel that L.M. Montgomery wrote herself. As much as I wanted the ending to be different and see her marry John Blyth it could not be.I loved this story so much and it had its moments that were heart warming and a few tears as well. Don’t forget Racheal she was a great addition to the story she reminded me of Anne.This book is a must read for all the Anne fans out there!

I wanted to know as I suspect many readers of Anne of Green Gables want to know, what keep Marilla and John apart. The flow from LMM to SM as the author was easy, getting a vision of Anne Shirley out of my head as I read about a young Marilla was much harder. The transition from the adult Marilla to 40 yo Marilla was so quick I thought I’d skipped more then a few pages. A good book that I am happy was written. Anne and Gil are the consultation to there not being Marilla and John.

This book contains a large variety of songs ranging from the earliest songs of the Jackson 5 in the early 70s to more modern songs like You Rock my World and Dangerous from the 90s/early 2000s, which was when Jackson was in the prime of his career. I feel the book contains appropriate songs, most of his number one hits are included, as well as most of the songs in the Thriller albulm. From what I hear, a few songs that were essential from Michael like Earth Song or Never Say Goodbye were not included, but seeing as this book is based strictly on the 2005 CD of the same name, this is forgivable. Most songs are great but a few don't translate the best to keyboard, but like every book, there are always those few songs that make the entire book worth buying and the less desirable songs forgivable. As for difficulty, this book is not for beginner or early intermmediate players. There are a lot of sharps and flats in many of the songs, which are in the original key Jackson sang them in. They aren't really advanced either like Joplin or Gershwin, but they are on the more difficult side of moderate. One last comment is some of these songs for the piano part include a counter melody to the vocal part rather than go along with the melody, so for those songs you need to play off the top melody and add extra inversions to the notes to add more emphasis if you want to play the main melody, however, most of the songs' piano parts do go along with the main melody exactly note for note, but Bad and Thriller are some that don't. Overall, this book is pretty great and offers lyrics and chords, as well as great melodies and counter melodies for the vocals on piano. If you are a fan of Jackson and play piano, this book is a must have. If you like a few of Jackson's songs and are a pop fan, I still guaruntee you will like this book. It just has a really great variety and his best songs are all in here.

This book is well done and I think fairly faithful to the originals by the King. Unfortunately, the songs are a bit difficult for me, as I'm not that great a pianist, and I get discouraged -- especially with the complex syncopation. MJ might have turned white, but his music didn't. Even very ballad-like songs, like "Heal the World," can have difficult and complex rhythms in them.

A good value. Fun to play, not too hard, not too easy. Authentic sounding, easy to tell what songs they are right from the get go.

This book is special because the piano parts are to the record and not just a re-arrangement of the melody line. That's rare. Highly recommended.

I'm so lucky to have this. Great anthology! From his early classics to his later years, this volume holds all the tunes of 'The Essential Michael Jackson' double album.

This book was alright, but I was really put off when the author stated that birth moms can have unconditional love, but step moms cannot experience that because the kids aren't "theirs". I totally disagree, or why would people bother to adopt children if they aren't capable of unconditional love. Things wouldn't be so difficult if step moms were given 1/2 a chance and weren't demonized in our society. Other than that this book has some good advice, perhaps the best advice for stepmoms taken from this book is to step back and let the father handle it, and make sure you have a good definition of self before stepping into this situation.

Good book, lots of it I could relate too. Only did about half the exercises...

Great companion in high conflict situation with my husband's ex-wife. I didn't realize that becoming a stepmother would entail having to deal with stress of the situation I was in. This book really opened my eyes to both sides of the situation and made it easier to understand her reactions. It taught me to set boundaries that enable me prioritize taking care of myself and challenged unhealthy thoughts that were exacerbating the situation. I haven't been able to find many other resources that have aided me in this. There are plenty about relating with your stepchildren an other facets of blended family but not so much the other party of the divorce. Then there are many resources that make you feel more like a victim with complaining and everything that keeps you from moving forward. If you are at all feeling helpless like I was, I highly recommed going through this workbook. You will learn to take back control of your own emotions and thus, regain control of your own life.

This book made me think outside the box in the most useful ways in dealing with my husbands ex.
