This is the first of Wendy Wax's novels for me but I'm sold. Our local UPS store guy turned me on to her work. Living in the Atlanta suburbs like she describes, I find the following very apt:"When they reached her exit, Melanie slowed. A series of turns took them unto four-laned Marietta Highway, which was also called Upper Roswell Road or simply 120. In the Atlanta area and its environs, it had apparently been decided that there was no reason to settle for the one street name when you could use two or three. If the name had the word "Peachtree" in it, so much better."Her protagonist's thoughts of bumper stickers:"Reading them as they flew by, Vivien knew what schools their children attended, how many sports they played, where they vacationed, what diseases they wanted to wipe out, and who they'd voted for as well as where they worshipped and exactly how proud they were to be an American."Maybe it's just me but I found those hilarious and so did my husband who I read them out loud to! Her main character Vivien Gray, while not initially the nicest person around and frankly speaking more than a little self-absorbed, she was still likeable and she grew as the story unfolded. Her secondary characters were intriguing and she had a very good angle on family, friendships, kids, parenting and motherhood, etc. It's "mommylit" at its finest. I hope Wendy Wax is not offended by that label.This had me in stitches:"And you're about as close to being a real journalist as a grain of sand is to being the Sahara dessert."Scarket Leigh was the best. :) You'll have to read it to find out who that is.The book comes complete with a Reading Group Guide which I liked as well. I will definitely endeavor to read her other titles, especially "The Accidental Bestseller." I recommend "Magnolia Wednesdays" for any woman, especially if you live in the suburbs. It will brighten your day.I am a fan.
Vivian is 41, has just been the subject of a viral video of her getting shot in the butt, quit her job, pregnant and worst of all, forced to move to the suburbs!This is a fun, light and page-turning read. There was just the right tough of humor, with nothing to over-the-top slapstick that you couldn't find the story believable. The ending was a bit fast/slapped-together for my taste. The story built up beautifully, but it just seemed like there was a rush to resolve all the story lines as fast as possible. I wouldn't have minded the book being a bit longer just so that it would have felt a little less forced. Other than that though, I was totally engrossed in Virginia's story and the characters really became your best friend by the end.
I was looking for something fun and easily entertaining. I got a whole lot more than I expected. Fun and entertaining, but also though provoking and jarring. Life takes us to do many places, we sometimes forget what lead us there!
I loved this book! It is well written and I so appreciated that the author chose to not use foul language. The story is so about southern life,especially as told by Scarlet Leigh.
I loved reading this book. As with many on Wendy Wax's books, the main characters life under goes a dramatic downward turn.The interesting part is the way they cope with the adverse situations, the impact on others in the book, and the way they finally learn a new way to live their lives. I love the books positive way that life can change and be even better in the long run. It was very hard to put the book down. I loved all the characters in the book. Hope to hear more from the author about them in the future.
Interesting and fun read. The main character definitely changes throughout the story, and the author does a good job of showing how she resists that change: nicely done and realistic! There's a good dose of humor, yet Ms Wax wisely avoids the too-common trap of taking things way over the top, especially at the end, to get her laughs. She holds her thread of tension consistent, and wraps things up believably and satisfactorily. The only reason I gave four and not five stars is that, for me, it lacked the WOW! factor.
I love books about family relationships and how they deal with each other. This one was great. I wasn’t ready for the end.
MAGNOLIA WEDNESDAYS is great lazy read, one that has enough twists and turns to keep you hooked. The "bad guys" are seemingly evil enough, but there are others who make you reach over and give them just a little tiny pinch. The location reflects true southern upper/middle class and the portrayal of the characters adds to the big picture. There is an air of sympathy that develops throughout the story that reminds readers that life is never perfect...rich or poor.Reading a sample is a decision maker for me...let's hear it for Amazon's perks.
