We in the west have once again become obsessed with heroes and heroines who are flawless and idealized. Our heroes and heroines are perfect, brilliant, amazing, the best at what they do, they do no wrong-- and that makes for a very tedious, boring read.What made Peach blossom stand out was that it embraced a heroine who had strong points and weak points both; she could be clever and witty, she could be vain and proud. Her charm and wit sometimes saving her, and her faults often lead to disaster. In the end, the story's tragedy comes not from some generic outside villain like in contemporary western fantasy, but rather because of the faults of the two leads- Quian's pride and Yen Hua's deception.The story follows along a beautiful dramatic arc- moments of tragedy are painful because they are contrasted against moments of humor, moments of heartbreak are painful because they are contrasted against moments of love. Rather than following the stale pattern of contemporary western fantasy novels where a perfect, flawless hero has to go up against an evil foe only to come out victorious in the end, Peach Blossom follows a painfully human trajectory of mistakes, successes, loss and redemption. This is truly an epic adventure, and the first book that has made me cry in a long, long time.Through its rich world building, a westerner can catch glimpses of the rich world of Chinese folklore- rituals of Taoism, the disciplines of Buddhist teachings, and ancient Chinese myths play a large part in the story and catches the imagination and curiosity of any westerner who might not be familiar with those things.As I said, the tragedy in Peach Blossom comes when you realise it's over. After being given a glimpse into the remarkable world of Chinese fantasy and mythology, one yearns for more- but unfortunately, there is a great lack of Chinese fantasy novels and romances available in the western market.If this mere glimpse into popular Chinese literature is anything to go by, then clearly it has so many wonderful and unique and amazing qualities that most Westerners will never have access to. As western writers have made an impact on the world with stories like Harry Potter and Robin Hood that have crossed the boundaries of countries and introduced foreign nations to English folktales, imagine how far Chinese authors might go in introducing the world to China's beautiful and unique literary voice and rich literary and mythological heritage.There are Western writers who have tried to write stories about Chinese legends or set in China, but the written Chinese voice is inimitable. There's a cadence unique to the Mandarin writer or the Cantonese writer that, when well translated, carries across the ocean. It is a beautiful, unique voice. And if western fantasy is currently lacking in anything, it is very much lacking in beauty and uniqueness.The bitterness that comes at the end of Peach Blossom is not just because of the story's bittersweet end, but because we don't know how long it will be until another Chinese novel of this quality might be made available to us.I have read that this book is plagiarized. I have read that this book isn't even among the best Chinese fantasy has to offer. Right now, this is among the best (and only) examples of xianxia romance literature available to the English market. I have been watching the Chinese television series, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (Eternal Love), on Drama Fever. The series is based upon the novel. The Prologue of the novel is covered in the first 25 episodes of the series. Chinese screenwriters do no delete scenes. So, if you are having difficulty following the story, I recommend you watch the series in conjunction with reading the novel. The story is both a romance and a fantasy. The story is a bit complex in that it jumps back and forth between the past and present and the mortal and immortal realms. However, it unfolds a beautiful tapestry of love, betrayal, and redemption.

The style of writing that Tang Qi uses took a bit of getting used to by me, but once I did I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I, like many others, saw the drama "10 Miles of Peach Blossoms" and heard so much about the book from the comments that I decided to get it. I'm glad that I did - the books always give you a much better idea as to what the characters were thinking, much better than the actors can portray. (No slight there - those actors were fantastic! It was just a very complicated story) There were some variations from page to screen but nothing that couldn't be reconciled. I liked the last 100 pages best - when the very complex story came together and all of the seemingly loose ends tied together in a perfect knot. Patience is needed - not a book to rush through. Take your time and enjoy the fantasy!

As someone who has watched the drama series Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, I enjoyed this book. I'm not sure if it's the translation or the words of the author, but it seems very simplistic, like a quick retelling of the drama series. Usually it's the book that has so much more detail, but in this case the book seemed to be lacking in detail compared to the drama series. Generally I want to read the book before seeing the movie or drama based on the book, but in this case, definitely watch the drama first. The drama follows the book almost exactly, but it is richer and beautifully detailed, while the book doesn't have much in the way of descriptions or details. All in all though, I definitely enjoyed it.

This book could have been an epic telling of true love that transcends all realms. But as a plagiarized work, I found that it was an awful lazy attempt at calling it a complete work. Told completely from Bai Qians point of view was a complete rip off to the reader. I think the original author with time could have honed this piece into a classic that would transcend generations. But the rip off artist robbed them of that opportunity and took an epic story and lazily turned out this tripe.That is a shame. Some of the reviews stated that it would be difficult with the jumping back and forth in time and the mortal realm. It was not.1. Bai Qain was not as unlikeable as some have stated.2. This work is amazingly amateurish. The screenwriters for the tv show did an infinitely better job of rounding out the story and characters. Giving them more depth, likability and character.3. It has homosexual overtones. Also some lite sexual descriptions. Not 50 shades of grey level of descriptions though.4. The flaws of the book are fixed in the show but the book does give insight on passage of time, some of the more confusing parts of the translations in the show, and it is also not over complicated with several story arcs.

Coherent, well-organized, insightful and scary analysis of a USA society and economy structurally engineered to make life extremely difficult for the Millennial generations.Harris supports his clear thesis throughout in journalistic manner with reference to dozens of studies, statistics and sources, however despite being scholarly high-level work his book is also riveting and a quick read, really puts our contemporary society in perspective especially for Millennials and Generation X.Particularly important with regard to employment prospects, competition, demographics and the stark reality of our near future.

If you are, or love, a millennial (hopefully all of us), you need to read this fresh look at the world they inherited. In very accessible prose, Harris delves deep into various facets of society from how we play and entertain ourselves, to how we work. He explains how we have raised a generation of kids, now adults, with more skills, credentials, and abilities, making them the most efficient and productive workers the world has ever seen. On the way to building all this human capital, we also created the most tested, stressed, prescribed, indebted, and incarcerated group of young people we have ever seen.It's not always cheery, but it's often funny, and extremely smart. Must read.

For some reason, some website I had visited recommended this book for youth ministry. I'm not completely sure why... perhaps because Millennials have nothing going for them and we in the church can leverage that into faith. (A somewhat snarky, but perhaps not entirely empty notion.)Certainly religion is left far off the map in Harris' analysis. Perhaps he should have included it in the Boomer legacy. Boomers left the church to chase after sex, drugs and rock and roll and then when they went to have kids didn't want to impose some faith on them, so left them to "find their own faith." Great plan, that. And so the faith in Christ that could mitigate this onslaught on childhood (and on into adulthood) has never been introduced to at least one, probably at least two generations. Harris has interesting statistical analysis and logical extrapolations from it, but no answers. (For that I don't fault him for not painting a faux ending.) I would be interested to hear how he thinks the dearth of spirituality impacted the doomed generation.

Do you feel like crap everyday? Do your friends take medication just to get through a week of finals? Do you hear older people complain about being on your phone all the time? This book shows how Gen X may have ruined the very idea of a Millennials and now refuse to take credit for it. Breaking down the specifics of the generation that is known for being unproductive and lazy shows how Millennials have become deprived of childhoods based on how much pressure is placed on them to be the best from the very beginning.

Wow, I can't say that I often finish books, but this I couldn't put down. I'm currently a college students studying engineering & I don't really have much time to read books for fun. I honestly was so intrigued by this book that I prioritized reading it every night until I got through it. This is a must read for any college student who is making important decision about his or her future. Super eye opening narrative about the lies we've been told all our lives about our potential for success & our ability to be in control of our future. It honestly is a bit of a bleak outlook, but a fascinating read nonetheless.

Although at times the information was tough to accept, the book opened up a new level of understanding for me. It's obvious how much research went into this book and that research leads to quite a bit of in-depth detail. It is this detail combined with the author's own experience that really makes this book worth reading. The combination of facts, circumstances, and experience paints a really morbid picture, however, there is enough here to work with towards more positive outcomes.

A truly great book that looks at the 'stereotypical Millennial' and explains how rampant late Capitalism created them. It's easy to poke fun at an entire generation; it is much harder to analyse where that generation is coming from. That's what Harris does in one of the most readable books of social economics I've ever encountered.

This book immediately appealed to me as a generational researcher (and classic millennial). I tell my Lifespan Development students that we aren't going to use the phrase "kids these days" because it immediately distances us from other generations. The two charts on the back of the book are really interesting and I have already been sharing them with others. I would have loved more recommendations towards the end of the book. Looking forward to following the rest of Harris's work now.

I had high hopes for this book given the reviews here. I bought this book brush up on my existing knowledge and learn new things and was very excited to receive it. There are some interesting points and I liked that it has a section on heuristics. It introduced me to the idea of simulated annealing, which I am using for a problem at work now actually, but like most things in the book I had to turn to the internet for a better explanation. The book is a bit wordy and hard to read at times.The other major gripe I had is with the code examples. Most variables and method parameters are named a, k, c .. etc. For instance here is a method header in the backtracking section: construct_candidates(int a[], int k, int n, int c[], int *ncandidates)This makes the code very hard to read and follow as well when you are a lines deep in a method trying to figure out whatk[i] - c + a is. It has been my experience that most math/engineer types and professors tend to write code this way vs giving things descriptive names so the code is easily understandable. The book would be 10X more valuable had the code samples been clearer. I ended up sending it back.

Buyer beware! Amazon appears to be selling counterfeit textbooks. I have notified Amazon of this problem and re-purchased and still received what I believe to be counterfeits due to the very poor quality of the color, binding, printing, and horrible misspellings on the back of the book in particular.The contents of the book is great BTW. However I'd recommend buying direct from publisher.

If you've been sentenced with the CLRS book (Introduction to Algorithms), buy this book in addition!! CLRS has very firm technical descriptions, but The Algorithm Design Manual is simply much more enjoyable and provides a lot of the motivation for using some of the algorithms described in CLRS. The book is simply a delight to read.ALSO: perhaps most importantly, if you are a recent graduate of a computer science program and you are trying to get a job in the field, this is the FIRST book I would recommend to review algorithms and data structures. DO NOT EVEN BOTHER to pick up CLRS (unless specifically directed to do otherwise), as more than likely the questions you will get during the interview will be some variation of the problems that you will encounter in here. I had at least one interview in which all of the problems were derivatives of those mentioned in here; unfortunately I had not yet found this book and so I was rather poorly prepared. When I first picked this up a few months later, I immediately recognized it's value and the fact that this was the only resource I had needed all along.

Not sure why this is listed as "abridged" but the number of pages matches the other listing for the item. It took a fair amount of searching on the ISBN to find someone who disclosed the number of pages.Personally, I really like Mr. Skiena's writing style and his presentation is clear. It's not as dry as Sedgwick. This has now become my favorite book on algorithms.

This book seems to be a very loose touch on algorithms. The author stated his algorithm for solving the pyramidal number problem from pp 52 - 54, but where can we find and try out his program mentioned that it got 30,000 times faster, etc.? For the matrix multiplication problem stated on p 403, it just refers to other people's work without giving anything concrete.If you are looking for algorithms with real, working implementations, it might be worthwhile to check out "Algorithms with Implementation in C: a Quantitative Approach."

Steven covers a lot of topics and as often as not - not deep enough. I would have prefer fewer topics and examples, but more depth. Also, all his example code is in C++. I would have much preferred a pseudo code to any specific programming language.As others have noted, the spine is very weak, and fell apart rather easily. The publisher noted that it was printed on acid-free paper but failed to note it was bound with sticky-free glue.

It's not a great one to start off with, especially if you never did an algorithms class in college. I'd say it's a decent second book, as it has enough complexity, but it has a somewhat readable style. You can tell the author really tried to make the material approachable, but it's nowhere near as beginner friendly as the amazing book "Grokking Algorithms", that one is a true beginners book. This is a decent second one.

This book is great! For a lot of software engineers, you don't really end up dealing with data-structures or interesting algorithms; most of the time you're stuck in business logic. So it's easy to get rusty on your basic concepts. This book does a great job reintroducing those concepts to you. Even if you're a novice, this book is great. But if you've already had some exposure to CS-II/CS-III level concepts, then that is pretty helpful as well.The author introduces the algorithms and data-structures in practical terms and so it is easy to relate to them instead of thinking of them as purely abstract and theoretical. I especially liked the "war stories", where he shows you how he was able to apply theory in practice. What is great about this is that it lets you recognize the different problem domains and where you can apply specific algorithms and/or data-structures.The second half of the book is essentially a catalog of different problems that you can encounter, and how you can solve them with specific algorithms/data-structures or variations thereof.All in all, a great book and it is absolutely indispensable for a good software-engineer.

STEVEN FURTICK is the New York Times best-selling author of Sun Stand Still, Greater, Crash the Chatter Box, and Seven-Mile Miracle. I don't know Steven Furtick, but I guess John MacArthur does. During an interview, when asked for a word association with Furtick's name, MacArthur simply replied "unqualified." He did not elaborate. Furtick, like MacArthur, has an M.Div. from a historic, respected seminary. MacArthur does not have any higher earned degrees. MacArthur is about 40 years older than Furtick, so clearly has quite a bit more experience as an author and teacher. So why unqualified? Unqualified for what? I don't know much about the two pastors or their relationship, but MacArthur's comment seemed ungracious and unnecessarily unkind.The cool thing is, MacArthur's comment seems to have bothered me more than it bothered Furtick. In fact, Furtick took MacArthur's assessment as inspiration for his new book, (Un)qualified: How God Uses Broken People to Do Big Things. Furtick writes that we define ourselves with statements of "I am ______." It's that third word that makes the difference. Jesus changed Simon, the fisherman, to Peter, the rock. Unqualified to qualified. In the same way, God wants to take our doubts about who we are and give us a new identity. A new third word.We might tend to focus on our sins and shortcomings, our unworthiness. In Christ, we are made new, accepted by God. We focus on our own sin, and fail to share the love and grace of God with the needy world around us. Furtick writes, "It might be time to figure out who you really are and to value the real you as much as God does."Furtick spends a lot of time talking about Jacob, who required a great deal of re-identification. After deceiving his brother, marrying Rachel and Leah, and heading back toward his homeland, he meets a mysterious stranger with whom he wrestles all night. It was, of course, God, perhaps a pre-incarnate Jesus. At that time, he told Jacob he was going to change his name from Jacob, which means deceiver, to Israel, "triumphant with God."Just like Jacob/Israel, once we accept God's unconditional love and forgiveness, we are free to love and serve. "We don't need to spend one more day trying to prove ourselves, because we already have God's approval through Jesus's gift of righteousness." Furtick has put in faith in God, in God's work in him, not in the word of an elder pastor, no matter how well-known and well-respected.Furtick's writing is engaging, personal, and encouraging. If you are qualified, don't read this book. If you're qualified, I suspect you're wrong. That's the whole point: we go through life thinking we're the ones who aren't good enough but everyone else is. Or we justify that "well I'm better than that person so I'm ok." Pastor Steven has done it again. God uses him to relate to people so well. Every time I serve at church I feel completely unqualified. This book is a great reminder that God specializes in using broken people, but more than that, it shows you how! May I lose my "me first" mentality and in thankfulness point people to the love of Jesus. My past doesn't matter, it's the here and now that matters, and His strength will shine through in my weakness.

It's only been maybe 2months of watching and listening to him preach I have gotten so much out of him preach. I was sadden to hear someone could call him unqualified. I learned so much out of his book it was informative, and interesting. I learned more about me to in reading the book. No Steven Furtick is very qualified and I believe anointed by God to bring people to Christ which is his goal. I have problems in learning, and grasping the understanding of words. I am the opposite today I can understand and learn and it's awesome. I give the book 5star's you will learn so much, I'm looking forward in getting more of his books and reading and learning more. Listen to him preach. You won't be disappointed with the book.

I can't fully express how much I love this book. Steven Furtick's writing style is easy to read, and the information is thought provoking and eye opening even to the mature Christian. I highly recommend this book to everyone who thinks they are not good enough the way they are. Realizing that our relationship with Christ is a lifetime "process" and not just a one-time revelation that will change us forever puts my Christian walk into perspective. God doesn't expect me to be perfect just because I'm saved, and He wants me to depend upon Him constantly rather than taking away what I perceive as weakness in my life. Relying on Him is what we were born to do, yet He gives us free will and a choice. So many people feel that following Christ will stifle them and restrict their lives. The earlier we BELIEVE that He only wants good things for us and we trust His guidance, the more accepting of ourselves we will be...and the more peaceful our lives will be. There will be less confusion that comes from constantly trying to change. Who doesn't want that?

This book was def meant to be written and was purposed by God. Thank you Pastor Steven for your obedience to Christ in writing this book. It has been a huge blessing to me.By the power of the Holy Spirit in reading this book I have come to know that in my weaknesses and failures I do not disappoint God but rather am still truly loved by him. And have accepted my humanness for what it is and accept that I will always fall short and God does not love me less. My identity is found in Christ and not in my failures. I no longer receive the lie of condemnation for not measuring up bc it is for that very reason Christ died for me. I also learned I am accepted and approved in him, as one who belongs to the family of God. I'm so thankful to know God loves me even when I fail bc I am his beloved child, chosen and called according to his will and purpose.This book has deepened my understanding of Christ's unfailing love for me and through receiving that a chain has been broken.Thank you and God bless you and your family your beloved sister in Christ :)

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It is as advertised, a book focused exclusively on one gene and how it relates to cancer. The author goes into great detail of how the gene was discovered and how it was originally misdiagnosed as a gene which causes cancer before its true nature was discovered. Of particular interests was the chapter, â€œThe Smoking Gunâ€ which discussed the discovery of how smoking caused a mutation at a specific location in this gene. It is this mutation which make people susceptible to cancer and this discovery which eventual led the cigarette companies to admit the truth. This was a particularly quick read. I would have preferred if the book strayed beyond the P53 gene and discuss more of the other genes related to cancer. Although well written, I am not sure there was enough information about just this one gene for an entire book. When reading the book and following through the scientific discoveries, the author would at times bring up a new scientist/researcher which she would then introduce in the book. She went into significant detail not only about the researcherâ€™s life, but also about her interview with the researcher. She would discuss details about his house, expression property, etc. (almost like filler material). I found this to be more of a distraction and after reading this, I needed to go pack a few pages to remember what the topic of research was being discussed. Despite this one critique, I found this book to be very good and would recommend it to anyone interested in cancer research.

Fun and informative, this is worth a read. There is essentially no science here, and after a while the obligatory human interest nuggets which are the prelude to each new topic become a little irritating. P53 is an incredibly relevant protein in cancer and aging, but too little of its scientific contradictions and complexities come across. If the outcome of this read is to provoke curiosity but not satisfy it, it succeeds. This is in itself is a worthwhile objective, but fundamentally disappointing.

â€œâ€¦ a gene that goes by the prosaic name of p53 - bestowed on it simply because it makes a protein with a molecular weight of 53 kilodaltons.â€ â€“ from p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODEp53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE by Sue Armstrong seems to be a reasonably comprehensive overview of the topic that even those with but a modicum knowledge level of genetics and biochemistry should find readable and comprehensible.The author jumps back and forth in time to show how the aggregate work of a multitude of researchers accumulated and built on itself to arrive at the understanding we have today about p53. This lends the narrative a choppiness which might have been ameliorated at the conclusion if Armstrong had provided a concise summary of the scientific findings to date. This she failed to do and the book suffers somewhat for its absence.p53: THE GENE THAT CRACKED THE CANCER CODE is, however, a commendable contribution to the popular science genre.

Although I have been somewhat familiar with the p53 literature for a number of years, I was greatly informed and entertained by this narrative; the author does a fine job of weaving the science with the mystery of this extremely important transcription factor. The book hits on so many areas of cell and molecular biology in a very understandable and human way that I am even considering adopting it as supplemental reading for my college-level intro to cell biology and genetics course.

Some nice but extraneous minutia of the people involved in p53's discovery, but their achievements and the science of p53 itself are pretty clearly explained. After reading it, you get a good sense of how important p53 is as a target for future cancer therapies. The book makes you realize the complexity of the p53 (and presumably other tumor suppressor gene) pathways. Kevetrin is one compound with promise to target p53. There is already hope.

Interesting story. I am an oncologist (cancer specialist), and so I would have appreciated MORE esoteric detail. I think most careful lay readers would be satisfied with the detail provided, and will understand what was being described in the book. The degree of technical detail remind me of a Stephen Hawkins book on the cosmos.Armstrong does a nice job of describing the history of p53, from its discovery to the present time. It helped me with perspective, and was a very interesting, if not comprehensive review.It is absolutely true that p53 is one of the most important cancer related abnormalities in humans. Unfortunately, it is a tough nut to crack, from a therapeautic standpoint. I think people interested in one of the most important causes of cancer will enjoy this book.

Generally a good overview of recent research involving discoveries about the properties of the p53 gene and its role in repairing damaged cell DNA. I took off one star, however, because the book seemed poorly organized and difficult to follow.

Fascinating biography of the "guardian of the genome" and sheds light on cancer research. I enjoyed it especially read in tandem with the Emperor of all Maladies: a Biography of cancer.
