This book was one that you definitely do not want to judge by the cover, which I found a bit misleading. Although the author does spend some years traveling around Europe in a hippie bus experiencing youth's greatest pursuits (namely sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll), the majority of the book focuses on what happened after those years.I very much enjoyed the portions of the book that dealt with Schultz's carefree, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants adventures in his late teens and early twenties. What a time he lived in and, to his credit, took full advantage of. Seeing the most amazing countries mostly by auto, staying in hippie communes and beach communities populated by drug dealers and experimenters, musicians, artists and beautiful women and men must've surely been the epitome of any American's youth. However, once Schultz returns to the United States and decides to pursue his medical career as a doctor in earnest, his life path takes a sharp turn to the right. As the years pile on and family obligations build, so does Schultz' seemingly never-ending pursuit of more, more, more. More money, bigger practices, larger houses, better schooling for his three children, more expensive cars and other status symbols. While I don't begrudge him this (in fact, I think more Baby Boomers took this path than care to admit), it becomes laborious reading in light of his earlier pursuits.Schultz seems to have lost most of that magic and innocent curiosity that he lived by in his younger days and I found this very sad and in all honesty, boring. His tirades to his Brothers in Arms (his generation) in the last several chapters of the book are self-indulgent and complete overkill. An interesting read and take on the Sixties generation, not really about where they came from, but where they ended up.

While the journey across exotic parts of the world, much of which are no longer safe for a Westerner, highlighting how much the world has changed in the last 40 years, is fascinating, the book really succeeds in showing the competing struggles we all face in our lives. For Dr. Schultz, there is the quest for higher spiritual knowledge competing against a life of great material comfort and desire for status ("To be The Man", as Dr Schultz puts it). There is the narcissism of youth contrasted against the responsibilities, empathy, and kindness of his adult life as a caring parent, loving son, doting husband, and highly successful Doctor and businessman. Dr. Schultz dreams big and achieves the height of success through determination, vision, and plain old hard work. Through it all, the book's central theme is really the quest for a life well lived, with a startling honesty for the times Schultz falls short in his personal behavior or petty emotions - things we all experience as contradictory human beings. It's his courage for facing areas that need improvement and for the real challenges we all must face with aging and death of those we love that really makes this an extraordinary biography. Sprinkled throughout is wonderful nostalgia for the Yankees, groovy times, playing safely outside after dark, and of course, the amazing music, movies, and television of the 50s and 60s. The reader probably won't agree with some of what Dr Schultz says (I found some of the Conservative political statements distracting from the otherwise superb narrative as they added little to the story), but you will grow along side this complex, good, enthralling man. He will become your dear friend and teacher as you read along, and you will be saddened that the book has to end - one of the greatest compliments you can give a book and it's author.

I liked reading Bob Schultz's story. He certainly has had many interesting adventures. I expected most of the book to be about his hippie days but this was not the case. Most of the book is about his career as an orthopedic surgeon. I found it difficult to reconcile his hippie days with his later more materialistic, conservative life. As a baby boomer hippie, I always wondered what happened to all the hippies. We believed in peace and love and acceptance of differences. What was mine was yours and we were all brothers and sisters. We were innocently idealistic and non-materialistic. We truly believed that when our generation came of age, we would change the world into a peaceful utopia. So it was interesting to me to see the evolution from hippie to mainstream conservative. There were some minor errors which seem to be caused from using a dictation system. There was a horrible car accident in the early part of the book in which Bob Schulz was badly hurt. I found it disconcerting that he never mentioned whether the other three people in the car were okay. I also thought the book was overly long and found the last few chapters to be extraneous. The ending should be more concise. I liked the insertion of historical events which helped put the times into context. Overall, I enjoyed this book and this baby boomer's unique story.

I liked the historical information and the candid way he wrote about his experience. Dr. Schultz did not sugar coat anything, he learned from his experience and came back to the U.S. And made something of himself by working and studying hard. I came to this country in 1967, so I am familiar with a lot that occurred during that period because I was here, but I am also familiar with things that occurred before that time. I remember exactly where I was in the island when President Kennedy was shot. I hope his kids and his wife read his book and be proud of hi.

Life is a journey and in Autobiography of a Baby Boomer, the author recalls his incredible life's journey with all it's joys, fears, humor, hard work and fascinating people and places. It is written in a lively enjoyable style with detailed descriptions that make you feel as if you are there. I particularly enjoyed Dr. Schulz' final reflections of the baby boomer generation and his sense of gratitude for his family and life's blessings. Highly recommended for all ages- I'm sharing it with my 91 year old mother!
