GUS IS THE ULTIMATE GRUMPY HERO. If that’s your thing you should definitely try this!Gus was so great to read about. He’s quiet, a little strange, and very snarky. He also has one of the kindest hearts, he is one of the most accepting characters I’ve ever read about. He loves his life (as boring as it might be) and his routine, but one day everything gets turned upside down when he meets Casey. Gus is what made this a five star read, I LOVED HIM SO MUCH. *cries*What first caught my attention about How To Be a Normal Person was that the love interest is asexual (this is so rare!). Casey is an asexual stoner hipster. When he moves to Gus’ hometown of Abby, Oregon, and starts working at his favorite coffee shop, he instantly knows that he and Gus will be best friends (though this idea horrifies Gus).It did take some time for me to get used to the way Casey talked at first. Everything about him was so exaggerated when we first meet, but he compliments Gus in the best possible way! His outgoing personality and sense of humor is the perfect contrast to Gus’ introvert ways. Their romance was so cute to read about.If you like any of the following things, you should give this a try:character driven storiessnarky humor & charactersslow burn romance (it’s all very cute!)well-developed main & secondary charactersamazing dialogue & banterThe humor of this book was a lot more subtle than Klune’s other works (basically the opposite of The Lightning-Struck Heart). It’s low-key and well-timed and it’s impossible to read without smiling. All the characters are fantastic: Gus, Casey, the We Three Queens… There’s not really a lot happening in the ways of plot, the characters are what makes the story so interesting.This book made my heart happy. It’s about self-acceptance and accepting others, it’s about love, family, and friends. Its most basic message is: it’s okay to be yourself, you’re exactly who you’re supposed to be. Ahh, this is just a beautiful book.If you’ve read any of Klune’s other books and liked them, I see no reason why you wouldn’t like How To Be a Normal Person. If you’re looking for a sweet and funny romance check this out!
TJ Klune writes the absurd and genuine and touching like no other, but with "How to Be a Normal Person" he has created something lasting and ridiculously relevant to every single person whether they're heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual or all those other -uals. He wrote something for hipster men. For lesbian senior citizens. For zombified internet service reps. For me. For you.At its core, this is a romance. A romance between Gus and Casey? Absolutely! Mostly though, in my humble opinion, it's a romance between Gus and himself. No, it's nothing even remotely creepy, or kinky, but just good old fashioned self love. No! Not onanism...self appreciation? Acceptance? Sigh. You know what I mean. This isn't THAT kind of book. No sexy, sex-sex here, and somehow, the better for it.I won't be dishing out any storyline summarizing because you really should ride shotgun with Gus for the full experience. There's so much ahead for you- grumpy shopkeepers with quirks galore, visiting writers who digs said quirks, good natured meddlers who may or may not be sisters or polygamous lesbians or sister polygamous lesbians. And, typical Klune style wit and worry and wistfulness. Enough to satisfy, no- quench- the desires of the most dedicated klunatics out there...I think between all the laughing, and crying, and the ever painful laugh-cry, Klune discovered that little underfed spot in my heart and filled it. I hadn't expected that. The laughs and tears, yes, but not that deep, fully realized satisfaction. So, Gus and gang- thank you for being a friend. Your heart is true. You're a pal and a confidante.Hey! Did anyone else squee with the Bear and Otter homage?!
Look. I don’t have a lot to say pre-Running Thoughts because my running thoughts are LONG. But I didn’t think that I really liked this book until it almost was over and realized that I loved it. That’s all.Running thoughts:I’ve now heard Gustavo’s name multiple times in other series of Klune’s, so I have pretty high expectations for some reason. I mean, I usually do anyway. Because it’s TJ.Raise the roof.Fun story, I live in Wichita.Bear and Otter. So many Easter eggs in these books.People don’t seriously act like that. Right?!Klune’s poetry is really. just. so epic and awesome. I can’t even.To be honest, I’m not really sure about Gus.I was trying to inhale air when I read this sentence and snot just came out and it was gross but oh my god.Why are there always incredibly sad parts to all Klune books that make me want to die and be sad and then die some more? I’m ready for How To Be A Movie Star since it’s going to be a HAPPY book. I mean, maybe. I’m not sure that Klune really knows how to write happy.I think I’m having an existential crisis over hugging. Because getting the first one out of the way DOES make it easier in the future.Gus is growing on me. Slowly. Like mold.I’ve decided that We Three Queens are probably the owners of this advice website.Side thought: I think it’d be fun if someone read my running thoughts while also reading the book. Maybe I’ll make Eliz do it.Uggghhh I’m starting to get all nervous because I’m at 63% of the book which means that at some point in the next *does math* 27% there is going to be drama beyond all drama and then Gus and Casey will have to find their way back to each other for true love.I’m using the internet in the complete wrong way. Doing it wrong.Maybe Paul wrote this. Also, Easter egg.Here it is.Its possible that I’m demisexual. Who needs therapy when you have Klune books.Oh my god, I was not prepared for that joke.HEY. WTF.
