About the Author

Mark Rashid (pronounced RASH-id) is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Rashid then studied the martial arts as a way to improve his horsemanship, and he has now earned a second degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo. Rashid has been a guest on NPR and was featured on the Nature series. He is the author of many bestselling books, including Journey to Softness and Out of the Wild, a novel that is now a major motion picture. Rashid’s clinics are immensely popular around the world. He lives in Estes Park, Colorado.

Nice job of sharing re-education or a complete restart ala Rashid style of his own personal horses. I really liked the emphasis on starting with a healthy horse--equine dentist, farrier, body work, chiropractor, all play a role as the horse is made as comfortable as possible before beginning trading, which in turn not only makes for a more engaged and willing partner, but also allows training deficits to stand out so they can be directly addressed.

I loved Mark's first books and although I have enjoyed every one since, this one stands out for me. I know nothing about martial arts so those references are always somewhat lost on me. But Mark is really really good at explaining elusive concepts, for those of us who aren't as intuitive -- in general and with respect to horses -- as he is. Even for someone like me, with only one horse that is not particularly worried, there are concepts I'm looking forward to working on. The one star reviewer who described this book as "very elementary" must have no feel for horses; this book is anything but.

For those horse people who are discouraged and frustrated with their horse and theirselfs, this book will show you the way to start over for success.

Overall the book was an easy read and very interesting. I thought there would be more instructions or demonstrations in it, however it had a lot of neat stories with lessons tied into them. He did reference stuff like body work quite a bit but not a whole lot in depth which leads me to buying another book by the trainer who designed the method he referenced, in order for me to “unlock” the portal which he thought so highly of as far as helping with restarting. It was interesting though and a lot of his tips can be easily applied and understood.

This is an amazing book. I just keep reading it over and over, picking up things I missed the last time through it. Mark is an excellent writer. I think this is the 6th book of his that i have read. Highly recommend it to anyone with a horse.

Really can appreciate this book to my own experience as well. Sure has helped me reconfirm and improve my horsemanship. I keep going back to thinking about how I can do things better. Great book to have on a shelf!

Mark's books are so thoughful of the horse's thoughts. I love this. It helps me and supports me in an environment where this never happens and my pursuit of softness, lightness and consideration for the horse are looked down upon as a weakness. Thanks Mark.

This book, like most of Mark Rashid's books, is about Life. It's just told in the context of horsemanship and Aikido. Another REALLY good book from him!
