Review

“Affective Communities is outstanding. It stretches postcolonial theory well beyond its usual boundaries. Leela Gandhi successfully documents the anti-imperial affiliations and politics of certain marginalized subcultures in late-nineteenth-century Britain and Europe, and she shows what Indian nationalists owed to these traditions.”—Dipesh Chakrabarty, author of Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference“A very original and thought-provoking book, Affective Communities offers an outstanding contribution to postcolonial and queer studies. Leela Gandhi provides detailed, brilliant discussions of particular figures such as Edward Carpenter, Henry Salt, and M. K. Gandhi and the ways in which they interwove their various radical counter-cultural interests into larger political strategies of anticapitalist utopianism.”—Robert J. C. Young, author of Postcolonialism“Affective Communities is an important book that challenges the founding principles of postcolonial theory not in order to reject its ambitions but to open new ways to approach these urgent issues. . . . This book is hard to put down, but it also invites frequent rereading as a guide and as a reformulation of the theoretically and politically complex terrain of anti-colonial and postcolonial theorising.” (Linnell Secomb Postcolonial Studies)“I admire the passion, integrity, and brilliance with which [Gandhi] makes her case. . . . This is a book to be savoured for its suggestive insights. . . . Its intellectual energy derives . . . from Gandhi’s inventive retrieval and analysis of forgotten texts . . . . ” (Seth Koven The International History Review)

This book proposes to shares new information on cross-national, cross-racial dissidence between pairs of turn-of-the-century radicals in Great Britain and the colonies. But Gandhi often does not pursue her own leads, instead segwaying into discussions of familiar theoretical texts in gender and sexuality studies, again often not particularly pertinent to the matter at hand and sometimes scarcely relevant in context. The real interest of this study is historical; the theoretical material is familiar and not always apposite. Not comparable with similar studies by Elleke Boehmer or Gauri Viswanathan.

A great addition to post colonial studies.

Anyone doing any kind of multicultural, interracial, coalition-based or collaborative social change work will find inspiring examples and cultural critique that will surprise, delight and challenge your assumptions. Gandhi mounts a direct challenge to the Hegelian master-slave dialectic in which one can only understand the "other" in terms of either similarities or differences to oneself. She not only encourages us to dispense with labels and categories, but also liberates the reader from individualistic identity in favor of a more subtle, but ultimately more fertile, singularity taking place in context of communities with various, uncategorizable members. This book is not an easy read and my only complaint is that its ideas deserve fuller communication, so I urge readers to persevere and use a dictionary. Take your time reading and return to it as needed to allow its ideas to seep into your understanding.
