You Can Paint Pastels, by Marie Blake

From Library Journal

I worry when I see books claiming categorically that everyone can be taught to paint. These two books confidently insist that the "absolute" beginner can produce pastels and watercolors in no time. In Blake's attempt to prove this, she sensibly points out that pastels can be seen as crayons for adults no messy oils, tubes, and brushes to deal with. She takes the student from simple marks on a page through tone, perspective, and so forth to simple still lifes, landscapes, and figures. Despite initial doubts, Blake does deliver in this volume, and for those on a budget, it's less than half the price of Jackie Simmonds's more comprehensive Pastel Workbook: A Complete Course in Ten Lessons (LJ 11/15/99). With an identical format and purpose, Crawshaw takes on watercolor for the beginner. Starting with a basic flat wash, he advances to simple fruits and flowers, people and buildings. Unlike Blake, he skips certain drawing fundamentals. Nevertheless, this delightful little book will complement Mary Whyte's Watercolor for the Serious Beginner (LJ 3/15/98). Both step-by-step guides for the absolute beginner are recommended, especially for libraries on limited budgets. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I am still a beginner but with this book I've learned to apply some basic techniques. Now I can paint pictures that my family enjoys. Overall, this book is an excellent publication---layout, explanations, and graphics.

This is one of the better books on beginning Pastels use. I used it in my art class for Middle Schoolers.

It was okay but not what I expected.

I am an absolute beginner and this book was a great help. It takes you step by step through techniques to making pictures and includes a list of the colors you need. It helps build up your skills. If you know nothing about pastels but would like to, BUY THIS BOOK!

I have got the french version and yes this book is suited for the beginners.Just 6 pastels for the beginning (3 warm color and 3 cold color) and move on

This book enables a beginning pastel artist to grasp the fundamental. I have looked over a number of books on pastel painting and this one is more comprehensive and useful.

It's better than most beginner pastel books, for which I'm grateful.

#61,356 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

One thing for sure, my Tuesday nights—and all my week nights--are way different, and busier, than what Christopher Kimball and his Milk Street team members are experiencing. And my local grocery stores are not as well stocked as theirs. And I can’t make trips to my grocery stores as often as they do. And I’m pretty sure their pantry is twice the size mine is. I do my own prep and clean up, too….. And I’m not sure what they mean by saying “Make Tuesday nights the new Saturday night”…..And, I’m not quite sure why Mr. Kimball has so badly short-changed American food, and foods from other North American and South American countries and cultures in this cook book. But he certainly has! Even European foods have been shunned. I came looking for quick, easy, new and redux, week night recipes. That is not what I found in these pages. That all being said, I think Christopher Kimball and his group have put together a very interesting group of recipes: Challenging, unique, varied and tasty. Well worth the time and energy they take to make them. And--contrary to many recently-released cook books that feature 100 recipes or less--there is quite a large selection of recipes from which to choose. Too bad for me that not all that many appeal to me, and they don't appeal to my family members either. And for how “easy” the authors claim these recipes to be? Well, maybe for the experienced among us…… And when I think deeply on why these particular recipes seem intimidating to me (and I have thought deeply on this), I have come away with this thought: The ingredients—not the techniques—are not those I usually use. And the fact that Mr. Kimball assures me that I should make these recipes on a busy weekday evening makes me apprehensive! And what if my family doesn’t like these flavor combinations? Do you really want to spring new flavors on your family members when they are exhausted and starving? What happens when they don’t like that new flavor? Let them starve? The fact that many of these ingredients are not found often on my grocery list is a challenge in itself—and it will take extra time running up and down the grocery store isles.(And I don’t think Mr. Kimball considered all this when developing and writing this book. He and his team must be too busy traveling and trying new dishes, (made by others the first time around…..), to bother with understanding the realities of mothers and fathers working and coming home to school-age children, grass that needs mowing, news to be watched, clothes to be washed…….)For instance, most of the recipes showcased in the large chapter of “fast” recipes—require you full attention for 45 minutes or more. For the most part, these are fairly involved recipes that usually utilize 10 or more ingredients, a good amount of prep work, several pans, your food processor, maybe the microwave, measuring cups and spoons, fresh herbs and an assortment of spices. Your counters will be filled and you will refer back to the recipe book often. If you stop to greet spouse or children or answer the phone or take fill the dog bowl, you won’t be finishing in 45 minutes….. When I changed my frame of mind, and renamed this chapter “Leisure Day Recipes”, I became much happier with them…..SO: Here is my tip for handling this particular cook book and for getting the most out of it. Do not baulk at these recipes! Embrace them! Do NOT try to make them first on a week night, when you and your family members are tired and starving and rushed! Try them on a weekend first. Cozy up to them gently and get acquainted with them on a slow day. In fact, come to think of it, that is great advice for any new recipe. Don’t try something new when you are distracted. Wait until you can give the recipe your full attention. When you have made the recipe once or twice, when you’ve kind of memorized the directions, and know where to reach for that new spice on your pantry shelf, then bring it to your very busy Tuesday Night.Personally, I’ve been on the lookout for new ground beef and ground pork recipes, and I’m happy that I found some in this book. And I will be incorporating some of the recipes using sumac into my repertoire. But in general, I had higher hopes for this book.

Overall, I like this book. The range of recipes is very diverse-- a lot of different foods from Asia, the Middle East, Italy, North Africa, etc. I really like that aspect of it--supposedly simple recipes (more on that later) but with foods that aren't typically in my repertoire. I've enjoyed trying a couple of the recipes in the book (the coconut-lemongrass shrimp and the maple whiskey pudding cakes) and have several more marked for future tries. Each recipe has a picture, which I like, and a tip for cooking (something like don't stir the sauce or whatever with a little reason why, to enhance your recipe.) The recipes are broken down into "fast, faster," and "fastest" depending on their cooking time ("fast" is a recipe that should take 45 minutes-1 hour, "fastest" is something under 30 minutes. "Faster" is in the middle.) It also has simple side dishes, one pot recipes, roasting recipes (for vegetables and meat) and some desserts. Again, a wide variety of recipes. The two dishes I've tried thus far have turned out well (my husband can't stop gushing over the maple whiskey pudding cakes.) I liked the shrimp, it had a great flavor and a nice heat without being too spicy. So why only three stars? Two main reasons--the difficulty of finding some ingredients and the cooking/prep times are not accurate (at least not for me.)1. There was maybe one recipe I could make with the staples in my pantry. (The maple whiskey cake). When I think Tuesday night, I think something I can whip up with things I have on hand. Now I realize these are diverse recipes from across cultures so I know I wouldn't have everything on hand (like I don't have fish sauce, but I understand how that can be considered a staple because millions of people always have it in their cupboard), but some of the things Kimball considers staples I can't even find in the local grocery store (pomegranate molasses, for example.) It seems every recipe calls for some unique kind of pepper (serrano, Fresno, jalapeno, sichuan peppercorns) which can also be hard to find in a small town grocery store. I had to do a bit of substituting in the coconut-shrimp recipe to make it work. But in the end, even though I had to use peanuts instead of macadamia nuts, it was really tasty.2. I'm not the most efficient cook, but my crack at a "faster" recipe took double the 30 minutes estimated. I don't think I was overly slow, I just don't know how you do all the prep work and cook in the allotted time. Zesting limes, chopping lemon grass, searing shrimp, simmering sauce among other things took me almost an hour and a ton of dishes. It was definitely not "faster." I tried my best, and again, the food was tasty, but I used a lot of dishes and measuring cups to prep the food. The pudding cakes were pretty simple ingredients-wise (I was thrilled that I had all the required ingredients), but required stove top cooking on two burners in two different pots and waiting for melted butter to cool. Again, the recipe turned out well (my husband said it was restaurant quality) but there were lots of dishes to do.So overall, I enjoyed the food that I made, but I would take the cooking/prep times with a grain of salt and be aware that you are likely to go through quite a few dishes when prepping and cooking the meal. Also, you'll likely need to substitute ingredients or go on quite the scavenger hunt for some of the ingredients.

I have been following Robins writings for a long time. Acquiring Excellence in Pool is very well written and understandable. Having played for over 50 years it is nice that Robin has taken some of the mystery our of ball pocketing. This writing thoroughly explains and illustrates a very accurate way of pocketing balls. Excellent approach to learn aiming. The material assumes a solid establishment of stroke fundamentals. Once you have a good stroke and can repeatably and reliably deliver your stroke in a straight line, this material will provide you with methods to quickly develop "automatic" aiming. Having read both "Cross Vision" and the longer 2-volume work, "The Crucifixion of the Warrior God," I think that this shorter book should be the one you start with. Then, if you want more details, footnotes, and scholarly discussion, you can get the longer two-volume explanation. As I read through the longer two-volume work, I found myself thinking about "Cross Vision" and what Greg Boyd should take out and leave in. While I liked the 2-volume work, I found much of it to be rather repetitive. He spent SO much time in "The Crucifixion of the Warrior God" (most of volume 1) defending the idea that the crucifixion of Jesus should be our guiding lens through which to read the entire Old Testament, including the violent portions of the Old Testament. Most of Greg's readers were probably already on board with this idea, and so this made much of what he wrote in the 2-volume work unnecessary. That is why this present volume, "Cross Vision," is such a breath of fresh air.In a concise and easy-to-read way, Greg Boyd presents the central ideas of his cruciform hermeneutic (how to read the Bible through the lens of Jesus Christ and Him crucified), while addressing some of the major issues related to this approach. Also, this book includes more "illustrations" and stories than does the more scholarly work. This helps generate interest in the average reader and helps show why Greg's cruciform hermeneutic is helpful for life, theology, and ministry. However, as with the two-volume work, although I agree with nearly everything Greg writes in the book, I once again found myself disagreeing with the central idea ... that God withdraws from Jesus on the cross, and therefore, in the violent portions of the OT, God is withdrawing Himself from the people and nations who experience/suffer violence. While Greg is absolutely right that "something else is going on" in those violent texts, I do not think that the "something else" is that God is withdrawing from Jesus or from other people.I too have a cruciform hermeneutic, and I do not believe it is necessary to read Jesus' statement from the cross "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?" as a statement about God withdrawing from Jesus. Therefore, I do not believe that it is necessary to read the violent portions of the OT as God withdrawing from other people/nations. I do not believe God ever withdraws from the objects of His love, whether it is Jesus or humans. Jesus said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you," and since Jesus fully reveals God to us, then we must not say that God ever leaves us or forsakes us either. He did not forsake Jesus, and God does not forsake (or withdraw from) humans.Anyway, ... yes, read this book. I recommend you read it before the two-volume work, "The Crucifixion of the Warrior God." Greg presents a spectacular vision of the love God has for all people, as revealed in the crucified Christ. Understand that Greg is absolutely correct that we must understand God, Scripture, and life through the lens of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. But if you are uncomfortable with the idea that God withdraws when people need Him most, just recognize that there are other ways of understanding what happened to Jesus on the cross and what His crucifixion reveals about the violent portions of Scripture.

In this condensed version of "The Crucifixion of a Warrior God," Greg Boyd begins by highlighting troubling Old Testament texts—passages that show God commanding violence and even genocide, and narratives where God engages in violence. Boyd doesn’t deny the divine inspiration of these Scriptures, but he calls them the "elephant in the room" because they are morally revolting. Those who confess Jesus as Lord should realize that something else must be going on in these accounts, and therefore, they should not be taken at face value. In chapter two, Boyd lays the foundation for his thesis: God is like Christ, exactly like Christ. Since “the Son is . . . the exact representation of his [God’s] being” (Hebrews 1:3), Christ is the looking-glass through which we must see God. Paul writes, “in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9), which means that Christ is the full reality of God. Everything else and, in particular, everything that came before him was a mere shadow. Now that the reality has arrived we shouldn’t understand God by what we see in the shadows. As Jesus said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).Chapter three focuses on how Christ’s death reveals God. The hour of Christ’s death was the time when God was glorified or revealed (John 12:27–28). Boyd proceeds by emphasizing the centrality of the cross in Paul’s thinking: “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). The point is that God is not merely like Christ; God is like Christ crucified. God is cruciform love. And that idea exacerbates the problem with which Boyd began: “How do macabre portraits of God, such as the portrait of Yahweh commanding Israelites to mercilessly engage in genocide, reflect and point to the nonviolent, self-sacrificial, enemy-embracing love of God that is supremely revealed on the cross?” Boyd believes the reality of Christ crucified should lead us to stop justifying the violent depictions of God in the Old Testament. So what should we do when we are troubled by depictions of divine violence? Fully trust the revelation of God in Christ.Chapter four shows that the idea of going beyond the surface meaning is a key aspect of the Christian faith, especially in relation to Jesus’ death. Something more was going on in the crucifixion of the first-century Jew named Jesus of Nazareth. On the surface, it looked like another criminal being executed by the Roman authorities. But with the eyes of faith, we know that the death of Jesus was God stooping down to take on the sin of his people. Likewise, Boyd views the Old Testament divine warrior texts as “literary crucifixes that bear witness to the historical crucifixion when interpreted through the looking-glass cross.” As “literary crucifixes” these passages display the extent to which God descended to allow his people to view him through their “fallen and culturally conditioned state.” They were making God look bad and even crucifying him in their writings.Chapter five opens with two quotes from Martin Luther: “The cross alone is our theology” and “I see nothing in Scripture except Christ crucified.” In this chapter, Boyd’s goal is to show that although his proposal is new to most in the church, it has precedents in church history.Chapter six buttresses Boyd’s argument by providing evidence that God acted like a heavenly missionary reaching out to his people who were practicing immoral things and in the process had to accommodate to nonideal circumstances, such as allowing the practices of polygamy, concubinage, and divorce.Chapter seven introduces the psychological concept of projection—we see in others what we expect to see. Therefore, “the way God appears to people says at least as much about them as it does about God” (see 2 Samuel 22:26–27). The revelation of God then is adjusted to the spiritual level of the audience (John 16:12; Mark 4:33–34). Similarly, there are different levels of spiritual teaching (1 Corinthians 3:1–2; Hebrews 5:11–14). This idea helps to explain why God was depicted as a violent deity by Old Testament authors—that’s the way they saw him and in response that’s the way they acted. Moreover, if the Israelites had completely trusted in Yahweh they wouldn’t have had to lift their swords. How would the Israelites have moved into the land of Canaan? Perhaps through hornets driving out the Canaanites (Exodus 23:28–30) or through the land becoming unfruitful (Leviticus 18:24–25). Boyd concludes that those removal methods look a lot “more Christlike than the massacre-them-all strategy!” What about the command Moses heard from Yahweh to destroy the people (Deuteronomy 7:1–2)? Boyd believes Moses rightly heard God say that he wanted his people to dwell in the land, but Moses wrongly assumed God wanted them to slaughter the people.Chapter eight identifies parallels between the Old Testament portraits of God and other Ancient Near Eastern (ANE) cultures. The Canaanites, for example, depicted their god Baal as rebuking the waters and causing them to flee. In the Psalms, Yahweh is depicted in the same way. This chapter continues by showing how the conflict-with-chaos motif in the Ancient Near East is evident in the Hebrew Bible. Boyd believes this shows that the biblical authors, therefore, were influenced by their surrounding culture. Every nation in the ANE believed their chief god helped them win battles and Israel was no different.Chapter nine is focused on the meaning of Christ’s death or the atonement. Boyd asserts that God the Father did not actively kill Jesus, rather God withdrew from Jesus allowing other agents to do what they wanted to do. The cross reveals that “God judges sin by turning people over to the consequences of their sin” and it shows “how God defeats evil,” which Boyd calls an “Aikido-style of judgment.” By connecting certain dots, Boyd says that God set up an event that got “the kingdom of darkness to orchestrate . . . its own demise.” Divine judgment is divine withdrawal allowing evil to punish evil.Chapter ten differentiates between judicial and organic punishment. With organic punishment, the consequences are built into the act itself, such as the harmful effects of taking drugs. Boyd says, “The Bible generally construes God’s punishment of sin as organic in nature.” God does not actively punish because God’s judgments are described in terms of “divine abandonment.” He then marshals an impressive number of Scriptures in the Old Testament to support his point followed by New Testament examples, such as Romans 1 where God “gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts” (vv. 21–23).Boyd says that chapter eleven provides the strongest evidence for his cross-centered approach to biblical interpretation. He highlights biblical clues that support the idea that God was not actually the one doing the work of destruction. For example, in the killing of the firstborn Egyptian males it was “the destroyer” who served as the executioner (Exodus 12:23). Likewise, the judgment that Jeremiah initially ascribed to God (Jeremiah 13:14), was actually carried out by Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 21:7). And while Yahweh threatened to crush Judah (Lamentations 1:15), he actually only withdrew (2:3) and abandoned his sanctuary (2:7). In the process of withdrawing, “what the true God actually did was humbly allow himself to appear guilty of things he in fact merely allowed.” The disasters that came on Israel were not the result of God attacking his people; they were the consequence of God forsaking his people (Deuteronomy 31:16–18). Boyd then cites several more Scriptures to support his argument.Chapter twelve demonstrates that when the violence ascribed to God in Scripture cannot be attributed to human agents, it must be attributed to cosmic agents. Boyd points to many Scriptures to show that the New Testament authors viewed the world as filled with demonic agents. He then focuses on Paul’s statements ascribing violence to cosmic forces, such as the destroying angel (1 Corinthians 10:10), referring to the story in Numbers 16.Chapter thirteen zooms in on the Genesis flood story. After explaining how all of creation is linked together in Scripture, Boyd concludes “the people of Noah’s day experienced God’s wrath in the same Aikido-like way Jesus did on Calvary.” God withdrew and the forces of chaos were released. In chapter fourteen, Boyd conveys a cross-centered interpretation of the account of the Egyptian army drowning in the Red Sea. His primary evidence is that subsequent biblical authors interpreted this story as a conflict-with-chaos passage (e.g., Psalm 74:13–14; Isaiah 51:9–10; Habakkuk 3:15). Boyd concludes, “It was the sea monster, not God, who devoured Pharaoh’s army!”Chapter fifteen engages with other Old Testament texts, such as Elijah calling down fire on a group of men, Elisha calling down a curse on forty-two boys who were subsequently mauled by bears, and Samson’s acts of violence. Boyd’s interpretative conclusion in this chapter is predictable.Chapter sixteen examines the story of God commanding Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. In this chapter Boyd departs from his usual interpretative strategy by arguing that God didn’t merely stoop down to allow Abraham or others to believe he gave the violent command to Abraham, but that he actually gave it. God had to help Abraham experience a paradigm shift. And he did so by playing the role of a pagan deity, who commonly required child sacrifice, but then he clearly showed Abraham that he was different. Rather than demanding child sacrifice, God provides the sacrifice. It was a lesson Abraham would never forget.Regarding Boyd’s proposal, he has rightly placed his finger on a sensitive area in Christian thought. Since the beginning, Christians have been employing various interpretive strategies with morally revolting parts of Scripture. In the third and fourth century, for instance, Ambrose and Augustine allegorized disturbing texts. In fact, that type of interpretation helped Augustine move closer to the Christian faith. Moreover, the idea that we know God from Christ is so clearly expressed in many New Testament Scriptures that it should be uncontroversial. I also believe Boyd is right to highlight the death of Christ as the supreme act of divine love. However, at points it seemed like his emphasis on seeing God in Christ crucified excluded other parts of Christ’s life. When Jesus said, “The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me” (John 12:45), he wasn’t on the cross. His entire life reveals the Father: birth, teachings, healings, eating with sinners, confrontation with religious authorities, death, and resurrection. While the New Testament authors affirm that Christ's death is the supreme act of divine love, if “God is love” and Christ reveals the God who is love then we have to see divine love from beginning to end, from his birth to his resurrection. It’s like seeing a mountain range with one mountain that towers over the others. It’s right to highlight the one prominent mountain, but not to the neglect of the entire range. Why is this important? Because if we only see God in Christ on the cross, we will conclude that God’s love is only expressed in that one way. That and only that is divine love. But love takes different forms depending on the situation. When Jesus was rebuking the Pharisees for their self-righteous attitude he was expressing divine love. And the resurrection was divine love because it was the loving God vindicating his beloved Son. I don't think there is a recipe to get the right proportion, but I believe all the ingredients from Christ's life must be added to the mix.I agree that the concepts of divine abandonment and the organic nature of judgment are thoroughly biblical. However, when it comes to God’s presence it’s important to distinguish between various aspects. For example, God’s sustaining presence is with all living creatures and in that sense, God is always with us, no matter what. That's why Paul was able to tell his idol-worshiping audience, “in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). But of course, there is another sense in which God is not with the person carrying out murder in the same way God is with the person serving the poor. I’m not sure what to call that, maybe God’s supportive presence. Furthermore, in Christ God did not ultimately leave sinners, but reached out to us, and lived with us. We can call that God’s incarnational presence. The point is that it may be too simplistic to talk about divine abandonment without differentiating between various dimensions of divine presence.I also appreciated Boyd's insights on the idea that other agents rather than God were carrying out the violence. There really is some interesting biblical data to support that point. But, as others have noted, if God backs away and allows destructive forces to work, isn't God still part of the process?Perhaps these concerns are addressed in "The Crucifixion of the Warrior God," which I haven't read. Boyd did an excellent job of condensing his 1400-page work into this 300-page book. Overall, I found his interaction with Scripture and secondary sources to be thought-provoking and I enjoyed how he began each chapter with an interesting life illustration. I have two degrees in biblical studies and I almost felt like reading this book gave me a third degree because it drew my attention to many things I hadn't noticed previously. In conclusion, Boyd's proposal is based on the idea that God is completely nonviolent. How do we know? Because Jesus taught and practiced nonviolence and Jesus is the full revelation of God. If you can crack that foundation, his entire proposal would fall to the ground. Consequently, Scriptures that depict divine violence must be reinterpreted. And Boyd’s way of reinterpreting these disturbing texts is to see them as “literary crucifixes” requiring readers to go beyond the surface meaning. In particular, they show us that God allowed himself to be viewed as a pagan deity or warrior god, but when the full revelation of God arrived in Christ that perception was shattered.(Boyd's book gives a unique view of Old Testament violence. For other perspectives on the challenging topic of hell, see my book: Surprised by Hell: Unexpected Discoveries in the Bible and Church History.)

Greg Boyd has done HUGE service to the Church at large in putting together this book, making it readable and accessible to anyone and everyone! Cross Vision and Crucifixion of the Warrior God are truly ground-breaking works in modern theological writing. A MUST READ for any student of the Word.

I have enjoyed Greg Boyd's theology for some time so was expecting this book to be good. And it certainly is a great read. I recommend it to anyone who is having difficulty reconciling the loving Jesus of the gospels with the harsh LORD of the Old Testament. But I wasn't expecting the devotional quality of this book. I found it was a surprisingly uplifting read... I guess that is what happens when you get new insights that confirm that God is as good as you hoped. The real character of God shines through.I appreciate Greg's honesty at actually dealing with those troubling stories from the Old Testament in a Biblical and readable way.

This book will renew the perception of the Old Testament. Read with the wisdom of the Spirit it resolves the cognitive dissonance between who I know Christ to be and the pictures presented of God in the OT. Thank you for that I have been wrestling with this for many years. Thank you Greg for making an audible narrative. It seems to me like "the fullness of time" for this book, that God is working in the hearts and minds of his people to bring forth a people that look and love like Christ. The truth of who Christ is beautiful, and now to me the truth of who God is also beautiful. Thank you Greg for this book and for The Crucifixion of the Warrior God.

The only reason I didn't give this service manual all 5 Stars because I think one section was missing. The 1990 thru 2014 Miata all have the convertible tops. A big part of the Miata. That section was missing as well as mentioned of the hard top option. Otherwise, seems like a decent service manual.

I've used Haynes Manuals on my Ford Ranger and to tear down my Dodge Dakota to replace head gaskets. I do like their work. After buying a 2008 PRHT MX5 Miata, I figured I'd better get a Haynes manual for the Mach Five. I've not had a need to tear down into anything serious. I'm a bit disappointed that I found two graphic errors just flipping through the book. The oil viscosity chart on page 1-2 and the cylinder and coil terminal location graphic on page 2A-1 have the same incorrect graphic. These graphics both show the same cylinder firing order diagram. I'm still pleased with the instructions in my haynes Manuals and will continue to use them.

Pretty good manual, not as detailed as a factory service manual but will get you though most process. If you own a Mazda MX-5 it's only a matter of time and a 100% chance that the POS breaks, this could save the weekend.

For the price it can help the DIY'er accomplish a few basic repairs. It is a bit broad in its approach, trying to cover three generations to the Miata: NA 1990-1997; NB 1999-2005; and NC 2006-2014. FYI: generation ND 2016-present is not covered at all.

It covers only the earliest model of Miata's, and not the 2010.

Use this as convenient supplement to company manuals downloaded from internet.

LOVE THIS BOOK. Helped me do soooo many things to my 1990 Miata. It is jammed full of helpful info and will always be there when the internet or youtube is not.

Not for the newer MX5

The biggest tragedy of Peach Blossom comes when it ends. Western fiction, especially fantasy, has become very repetitive- generally retelling the same stories or same characters over and over again. We in the west have once again become obsessed with heroes and heroines who are flawless and idealized. Our heroes and heroines are perfect, brilliant, amazing, the best at what they do, they do no wrong-- and that makes for a very tedious, boring read. What made Peach blossom stand out was that it embraced a heroine who had strong points and weak points both; she could be clever and witty, she could be vain and proud. Her charm and wit sometimes saving her, and her faults often lead to disaster. In the end, the story's tragedy comes not from some generic outside villain like in contemporary western fantasy, but rather because of the faults of the two leads- Quian's pride and Yen Hua's deception. The story follows along a beautiful dramatic arc- moments of tragedy are painful because they are contrasted against moments of humor, moments of heartbreak are painful because they are contrasted against moments of love. Rather than following the stale pattern of contemporary western fantasy novels where a perfect, flawless hero has to go up against an evil foe only to come out victorious in the end, Peach Blossom follows a painfully human trajectory of mistakes, successes, loss and redemption. This is truly an epic adventure, and the first book that has made me cry in a long, long time.Through its rich world building, a westerner can catch glimpses of the rich world of Chinese folklore- rituals of Taoism, the disciplines of Buddhist teachings, and ancient Chinese myths play a large part in the story and catches the imagination and curiosity of any westerner who might not be familiar with those things. As I said, the tragedy in Peach Blossom comes when you realise it's over. After being given a glimpse into the remarkable world of Chinese fantasy and mythology, one yearns for more- but unfortunately, there is a great lack of Chinese fantasy novels and romances available in the western market. If this mere glimpse into popular Chinese literature is anything to go by, then clearly it has so many wonderful and unique and amazing qualities that most Westerners will never have access to. As western writers have made an impact on the world with stories like Harry Potter and Robin Hood that have crossed the boundaries of countries and introduced foreign nations to English folktales, imagine how far Chinese authors might go in introducing the world to China's beautiful and unique literary voice and rich literary and mythological heritage. There are Western writers who have tried to write stories about Chinese legends or set in China, but the written Chinese voice is inimitable. There's a cadence unique to the Mandarin writer or the Cantonese writer that, when well translated, carries across the ocean. It is a beautiful, unique voice. And if western fantasy is currently lacking in anything, it is very much lacking in beauty and uniqueness. The bitterness that comes at the end of Peach Blossom is not just because of the story's bittersweet end, but because we don't know how long it will be until another Chinese novel of this quality might be made available to us.I have read that this book is plagiarized. I have read that this book isn't even among the best Chinese fantasy has to offer. Right now, this is among the best (and only) examples of xianxia romance literature available to the English market. If there is more, better, then please- let all the happy, excited reviews show how eager we are for more Chinese fiction!

I have been watching the Chinese television series, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (Eternal Love), on Drama Fever. The series is based upon the novel. The Prologue of the novel is covered in the first 25 episodes of the series. Chinese screenwriters do no delete scenes. So, if you are having difficulty following the story, I recommend you watch the series in conjunction with reading the novel. The story is both a romance and a fantasy. The story is a bit complex in that it jumps back and forth between the past and present and the mortal and immortal realms. However, it unfolds a beautiful tapestry of love, betrayal, and redemption.

The style of writing that Tang Qi uses took a bit of getting used to by me, but once I did I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I, like many others, saw the drama "10 Miles of Peach Blossoms" and heard so much about the book from the comments that I decided to get it. I'm glad that I did - the books always give you a much better idea as to what the characters were thinking, much better than the actors can portray. (No slight there - those actors were fantastic! It was just a very complicated story) There were some variations from page to screen but nothing that couldn't be reconciled. I liked the last 100 pages best - when the very complex story came together and all of the seemingly loose ends tied together in a perfect knot. Patience is needed - not a book to rush through. Take your time and enjoy the fantasy!

As someone who has watched the drama series Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, I enjoyed this book. I'm not sure if it's the translation or the words of the author, but it seems very simplistic, like a quick retelling of the drama series. Usually it's the book that has so much more detail, but in this case the book seemed to be lacking in detail compared to the drama series. Generally I want to read the book before seeing the movie or drama based on the book, but in this case, definitely watch the drama first. The drama follows the book almost exactly, but it is richer and beautifully detailed, while the book doesn't have much in the way of descriptions or details. All in all though, I definitely enjoyed it.

This book could have been an epic telling of true love that transcends all realms. But as a plagiarized work, I found that it was an awful lazy attempt at calling it a complete work. Told completely from Bai Qians point of view was a complete rip off to the reader. I think the original author with time could have honed this piece into a classic that would transcend generations. But the rip off artist robbed them of that opportunity and took an epic story and lazily turned out this tripe. That is a shame. Some of the reviews stated that it would be difficult with the jumping back and forth in time and the mortal realm. It was not.1. Bai Qain was not as unlikeable as some have stated.2. This work is amazingly amateurish. The screenwriters for the tv show did an infinitely better job of rounding out the story and characters. Giving them more depth, likability and character.3. It has homosexual overtones. Also some lite sexual descriptions. Not 50 shades of grey level of descriptions though.4. The flaws of the book are fixed in the show but the book does give insight on passage of time, some of the more confusing parts of the translations in the show, and it is also not over complicated with several story arcs.

Review

"A landmark...Harris is a peerless observer of the harrowing economic costs of 'meritocracy'."―n+1"Malcolm Harris offers up an exciting, persuasive argument that young people are not, in fact, monsters. An excellent gift for NPR-listening elders who appreciate a good debate and could use a little sympathy for the millennial."―New York Magazine"The first major accounting of the millennial generation written by someone who belongs to it."―Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker"When will someone stick up for millennials? We have been sheltered by our parents, swindled by our universities, deadened by our therapists, and for all this our reward has been glib condescension from the boomer press. Rising to our defense is Harris, a familiar provocateur from the internet's left flank. Harris contends that America has stiffed our generation...He brings a fresh, contrarian eye to some of the usual data points...As generational advocates go, we could do worse than Harris."―New York Times Book Review"Malcolm Harris's thesis is the kind of brilliantly simple idea that instantly clarifies an entire area of culture: Millennials are the way they are-anxious, harried, and 'narcissistically' self-focused, though hardly lazy or entitled-because the neoliberal economy has made them so. When we raise children in a world that reduces people to 'human capital', then bids down the price of that resource, what else should we expect? Kids These Days is deft, witty, unillusioned, and brutally frank. Read it and weep, puke, scream."―William Deresiewicz, New York Times bestselling author of Excellent Sheep"Kids These Days is the best, most comprehensive work of social and economic analysis about our benighted generation. Malcolm Harris matches Naomi Klein for depth of research and Jane Jacobs for systemic vision. If you're a millennial who feels economically jinxed and unfairly spat-upon, but can't say why, cram this book in your brain; if you think millennials are lazy and entitled, cram this book in your mouth. Fascinating, infuriating, and bulging with receipts, Kids These Days shows us why no space is safe."―Tony Tulathimutte, author of Private Citizens"This fiercely smart book is not just another 'millennials killed chain restaurants' kind of thing. Instead, Harris dives deep into the ways that the millennial generation has been shaped by the capitalist economic forces at work now in America. . . It's a must read for anyone who cares about the future of our society."―Nylon"It is difficult to believe nobody has written this book before, although it is fortunate that Harris--who manages to be quick and often funny without sacrificing rigor--is the author who ultimately took up the task. In fewer than three hundred pages, he surveys the myriad hot takes on millennials-they're lazy, they're entitled, they're narcissists who buy avocado toast instead of homes, slacking on Snapchat at their unpaid internships-and asks, 'Why?'"―Bookforum"Malcolm Harris restores a good deal of precision to the business of defining the millennial and generational discourse in general. Adhering to a Marxian and behaviorist account of society, Harris argues that you cannot understand millennials - those born between 1980 and 2000, which include him, and me for that matter - without examining the political, economic and social institutions that nurtured them... Through this lens we get a sweeping sketch of the bleak, anxiety-ridden lives of young Americans."―Financial Times"A methodical deconstruction of one of the stupidest tropes to degrade recent discourse. The 'millennial' is created, not born, as Harris shows, and as is true of all creations, her qualities reveal more about her makers than they do about her... Kids These Days answers a political moment defined both by youthful outrage and by the patronizing responses to it, which deny that it is informed by lived experience."―The Nation

Coherent, well-organized, insightful and scary analysis of a USA society and economy structurally engineered to make life extremely difficult for the Millennial generations.Harris supports his clear thesis throughout in journalistic manner with reference to dozens of studies, statistics and sources, however despite being scholarly high-level work his book is also riveting and a quick read, really puts our contemporary society in perspective especially for Millennials and Generation X.Particularly important with regard to employment prospects, competition, demographics and the stark reality of our near future.

If you are, or love, a millennial (hopefully all of us), you need to read this fresh look at the world they inherited. In very accessible prose, Harris delves deep into various facets of society from how we play and entertain ourselves, to how we work. He explains how we have raised a generation of kids, now adults, with more skills, credentials, and abilities, making them the most efficient and productive workers the world has ever seen. On the way to building all this human capital, we also created the most tested, stressed, prescribed, indebted, and incarcerated group of young people we have ever seen. It's not always cheery, but it's often funny, and extremely smart. Must read.

For some reason, some website I had visited recommended this book for youth ministry. I'm not completely sure why... perhaps because Millennials have nothing going for them and we in the church can leverage that into faith. (A somewhat snarky, but perhaps not entirely empty notion.)Certainly religion is left far off the map in Harris' analysis. Perhaps he should have included it in the Boomer legacy. Boomers left the church to chase after sex, drugs and rock and roll and then when they went to have kids didn't want to impose some faith on them, so left them to "find their own faith." Great plan, that. And so the faith in Christ that could mitigate this onslaught on childhood (and on into adulthood) has never been introduced to at least one, probably at least two generations. Harris has interesting statistical analysis and logical extrapolations from it, but no answers. (For that I don't fault him for not painting a faux ending.) I would be interested to hear how he thinks the dearth of spirituality impacted the doomed generation.

This book I feel is really important for Millennials to read and understand the hardships that have been strategically placed on our shoulders since the day we were born.Take this gold starMake it soarTake this gold starAnd redefine the lore.Lame poem but this book really hyped me up to start redefining Millennials and showing the generations before us who's in charge now. Do you feel like crap everyday? Do your friends take medication just to get through a week of finals? Do you hear older people complain about being on your phone all the time? This book shows how Gen X may have ruined the very idea of a Millennials and now refuse to take credit for it. Breaking down the specifics of the generation that is known for being unproductive and lazy shows how Millennials have become deprived of childhoods based on how much pressure is placed on them to be the best from the very beginning.

Wow, I can't say that I often finish books, but this I couldn't put down. I'm currently a college students studying engineering & I don't really have much time to read books for fun. I honestly was so intrigued by this book that I prioritized reading it every night until I got through it. This is a must read for any college student who is making important decision about his or her future. Super eye opening narrative about the lies we've been told all our lives about our potential for success & our ability to be in control of our future. It honestly is a bit of a bleak outlook, but a fascinating read nonetheless.

Although at times the information was tough to accept, the book opened up a new level of understanding for me. It's obvious how much research went into this book and that research leads to quite a bit of in-depth detail. It is this detail combined with the author's own experience that really makes this book worth reading. The combination of facts, circumstances, and experience paints a really morbid picture, however, there is enough here to work with towards more positive outcomes.

A truly great book that looks at the 'stereotypical Millennial' and explains how rampant late Capitalism created them. It's easy to poke fun at an entire generation; it is much harder to analyse where that generation is coming from. That's what Harris does in one of the most readable books of social economics I've ever encountered.

This book immediately appealed to me as a generational researcher (and classic millennial). I tell my Lifespan Development students that we aren't going to use the phrase "kids these days" because it immediately distances us from other generations. The two charts on the back of the book are really interesting and I have already been sharing them with others. I would have loved more recommendations towards the end of the book. Looking forward to following the rest of Harris's work now.
