This book proposes to shares new information on cross-national, cross-racial dissidence between pairs of turn-of-the-century radicals in Great Britain and the colonies. But Gandhi often does not pursue her own leads, instead segwaying into discussions of familiar theoretical texts in gender and sexuality studies, again often not particularly pertinent to the matter at hand and sometimes scarcely relevant in context. The real interest of this study is historical; the theoretical material is familiar and not always apposite. Not comparable with similar studies by Elleke Boehmer or Gauri Viswanathan.

A great addition to post colonial studies.

Anyone doing any kind of multicultural, interracial, coalition-based or collaborative social change work will find inspiring examples and cultural critique that will surprise, delight and challenge your assumptions. Gandhi mounts a direct challenge to the Hegelian master-slave dialectic in which one can only understand the "other" in terms of either similarities or differences to oneself. She not only encourages us to dispense with labels and categories, but also liberates the reader from individualistic identity in favor of a more subtle, but ultimately more fertile, singularity taking place in context of communities with various, uncategorizable members. This book is not an easy read and my only complaint is that its ideas deserve fuller communication, so I urge readers to persevere and use a dictionary. Take your time reading and return to it as needed to allow its ideas to seep into your understanding.

Absolutely masterful bird book for the birder doing their own tour of the region. If bird can't be found, call the numbers included in sections and further help well provided. Brilliant birdfinding and site guide. Going to buy another copy as we have worn this on out.. more tape than paper on the map.. Kidding aside, to go the region as a birder/nature interest traveler you must have this book.. Sites and a bit of local interest discussed as well..

It covered the area in Botswana that I visited very well. A most useful book to have!

Great advice especially for first time visitors to any of the covered areas. Heavy on "LBJ's" but that's no real flaw -twitchers are people, too. Directions generally correct and useful where I used them in South Africa. You could actually plan a birding trip using the info in the book.

Bird watching will always be dependent on luck, but this book helped me find species that I wouldn't have found without it. Sometimes the bird appeared as if on cue - exactly on the spot where it should be. It's not an armchair book, you should use it for preparing for trips and take it along with you. Best buy in the last 12 months.

I purchased this book primarily to get more detailed site information for finding birds in Madagascar for an upcoming trip. My intent was to also use it for planning a trip to Southern Africa in the (hopefully) near future. Since the book is primarily for birding Southern Africa, I didn't expect there would be a huge section on Madagascar. I thought the information presented for Madagascar was very helpful, and I very much appreciated tips like where to find birds in nearby sites for Ifaty and guidance for not flushing Subdesert Mesites into the trees. For some areas like Montagne d'Ambre NP, however, the bird finding information was pretty skimpy and there was no information for another nearby site, Ankarana Special Reserve which, apparently, has spectacular rock formations and one of the highest densities of lemurs. If one is traveling this far north, it seems as tho more information could have been provided to assist in bird and mammal finding and logistics planning, especially for those traveling by themselves or using a travel agency that provides for customer-designed tours. Detailed information on places to go and target species lists is given for the more common destinations like Perinet and Matadia, Ramomafana NP, Ifaty, and Ankarafantsika NP.The binding for this book is poor at best. After only 3 or 4 openings, the page sections for Madagascar have already begun to separate from the binding. If you are taking this book in the field, you should probably bring a good supply of rubber bands with you to hold everything together. Now I am not sure it will even last for an Africa trip, let alone the Madagascar trip.

I just got back from a two month self-guided birding trip to South Africa. I used this book for all my planning and selection of the places to visit. The book proved invaluable. It is well laid out, includes very good maps - including one of the whole of Southern Africa with all the birding spots clearly marked on it, it has many excellent bird and scenery photographs and a complete list of all the birds that can be seen with a cross-reference to their location in the book. A few minor points that caused me some irritations during the trip: only odd pages are numbered in the middle of the right hand side (very confusing); some of the maps are a little misleading e.g. the Sir Lowry's pass map is incorrect - the trail starts directly opposite the car park and not downhill as shown; some of the instructions are also incorrect e.g. the instructions to the Damara Tern Colony (I could not find the location.) These are minor points that an able birder can easily overcome. The book also covers other Southern African countries however having lived in Zambia and Zimbabwe I found their coverage of these two countries to be very sparse only covering the top birding spots. I strongly recommend this book if you are planning a trip to this beautiful area of our planet so rich in birds.

Covering 11 countries from South Africa to Madagascar to Angola, Zambia, and Malawi, this book site descriptions, maps, and photos to take you to the birds you want to see. We bought it for South Africa, but are using it first for Malawi. It describes driving conditions and seasons to visit. It has good descriptions of the special birds to be found at each site, and where to look for them. If you want to make the most of your birding trip to any of these countries, or plan future trips, this is an essential guide.

This book is so full of information that it transcends the format of a typical site guide (you'll find advice on the type of car jack and how to behave in case of attacks by wild animals. The target audience are independent birders who will find the guide indispensable for Namibia, Botswana and especially South Africa. Commendably, the less commonly traveled adjoining countries of Zambia and Angola find coverage as well, even though they are not strictly in Southern Africa. One hopes that success will breed a future edition in which I would like to find GPS coordinates, particularly for the more remote sites. Even if you don't have any immediate plans for a birding trip to Southern Africa this book would enjoyable for the armchair adventurer fascinated by the charismatic (and often enigmatic) avifauna. Congratulations also to the publisher for keeping the price so low.

excellent book for an enjoyer of pool, and others too. Fat's gift for telling his life story in humorous detail is great! I am pleased getting this nice hardbound 1st edition of one of the greats in pool. He wasn't a tournament player, he was his own player!

A very fun book to read. Does not have as much instruction on how to make killer shots as I would have hoped, but still a great book. Just remember to keep your tongue firmly in your cheek as you read about the Fat Man's adventures.

This book is a classic. If you don't know about Minnesota Fats-you should!

In the 50' and 60's when I was trying to be a hustler, I found a book, allegedly by Fat Boy, on how to do drills that would radically improve your game. I practiced with them and noticed a vast improvement in my game.The movie "The Hustler", of course, had Gleason playing Fat Boy. Few people knew that the movie character"Fast Eddy" was a blend of stories about three hustlers from the east coast, all known as "Fast Eddy". One of the three and I became friends. I asked him how he got the name "Fast Eddy". He said in Brooklyn and Queens etc he used to blow every pay check shooting only the best hustlers around. They nicknamed him "Fast Eddy" he said because he lost his money so fast. Last I saw of him was '70 when he was headed to japan for some action.If you possibly can find it, get that old book of drills I mentioned and use it. Even if not written by Fat Boy, it's worth every penny you pay for it.

The Hustler was NOT based on Wanderones life. Wanderone chose the name Minnesota Fats after the movie came out. This have been clarified by Walter Tevis, the author of the book "The Hustler" many times.The character in the hustler would appear to be based on a short story by Tevis.Wanderone was by many accounts not a world class pool player, but he was certainly a gambler, and an interesting personality.

I started reading this, expecting either a history book with some occasional injections of humour, or an autobiography with a splash of Canadian colour.Instead, things I had known, and NOT known, about my country were woven into a tapestry with Mike Myers' experiences growing up and living in, then near but still loving Canada.I laughed, learned and cried far more than I expected. I live in the neighbourhood where Mr. Myers grew up, so know many of the places described, but you don't have to, because the flavour is expressed so beautifully.This is a true tribute to Canada, and also a candid and enjoyable tale of the life of the author so far, a real Canadian treasure.

LOVED this book, read it almost in one sitting. As a fellow Canadian who left Canada at about the same time he did, I could relate SO closely to Meyers' memories of that era. His humor made me laugh, his recollections got me teary-eyed, and it was also interesting to follow the upward arc of his colourful career. I recommend this highly, and not only for Canadians. Most Americans would both enjoy and benefit greatly from the references to Canadian history which, I am sure, would be their first introduction to how things happened just to the North of our common border. . . Well done, Mike!

In 1867, Canada got its independence peacefully from Britain through a piece of British legislation called the British North America Act. Canada remained a Dominion of Britain. Canada did not get its own flag until 1965 and its own Constitution till 1982. There is a branch of the government called Statistics Canada. The book tells about long lists of Canadian achievements of firsts. There is bilingual packaging with both English and French on the same label. Can Con legislation dictate that radio stations in Canada had to play a certain percentage of Canadian music. There is no plural for the word beer in Canada. There are some phrases that are uniquely Canadian. In Canada, when you’re sick, you’re not in the hospital, you’re just “in hospital.” A Newfie is someone from Newfoundland. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, the last province to do so. The Canadian accent has some of its own pronunciations of some words. There are a few regional variations in pronunciation, even within Canada. Toronto and Chicago have much incommon. Toronto is an Iroquois word meaning ‘meeting place.’ Chicago comes from the Algonquian, meaning “wild garlic” or ‘”wild onion.” The cities are approximately the same size. Both are along a Great Lake and have proud traditions.

I'm not even a Canadian, I'm Japanese living in the U.S. for 20 yrs+ and do not know that much about Canada to truly appreciate all the details, but still I really enjoyed reading this book. I feel like we have a lot more in common with Canadian ways of thinking and living than American ways and it kind of explained why I felt so much at ease with people from Canada in early years of my stay in the U.S. Very interesting, funny, entertaining and enjoyable read.

I got this book based on seeing Mike Myers interviewed about it, and the fact that I like Canada and Canadians. I thought it might be funny, and it is; but it is also very interesting and informative about what it means to be a Canadian. Happy 150th birthday, Canada!

So I was disappointed to read this book, very little about Canada, apart from the suburbs of Toronto, more a vehicle to talk about Mike Meyers. A mess of a book, sloppily written, disorganized. Perhaps if I were a Mike Meyer fan (or Canadian), I would have enjoyed it more. But if you are an American who wants to learn more about Canadians, look elsewhere.

Frustrating reprint of an amazing collection of photographs. In the original book, each photo was printed on a full page with the corresponding page left blank. In this edition, apparently to reduce the cost, the landscape photos were printed at half-page size with the corresponding blank sheet on the same page. It destroys the drama of the book to reduce the photos to postcard size and renders the blank pages pointless. So While I'm grateful to Errata for reprinting this, they should really do it over again and do it right.
